Oh! Dolls! My aunt gave me a doll of colour when I was a baby. I loved that doll. Loved her! She went with me everywhere. Her name (in one of my languages) was "Brown Doll". She was my only doll of colour. When we went to live in Europe all the other girls in my school was white and had white dolls. I wanted a white one and somebody (do not remember who) gave me one. But it was always "Brown Doll" (Bebe Marrone) who was my real doll. Once I forgot her in a Church, in front of the altar when we was visiting a small village. But my mother had written our phone number on her back so in the evening the minister called and said he found av very devoted doll in his church. I was so happy to have her back. When she lost one of her arms about the same time as my grandmothers friend died of cancer I stopped playing with her and believed she had died of cancer too. Cancer in her arm. But dead or alive, she is still there, my beloved Bebe Marrone. She was not a "Kenya Doll" but another sort of doll.
My sister was a tomboy with light blonde hair and blue eyes, and she ONLY wanted black Barbie’s and dolls when we were little hehe. I have pictures of her when we were kids with them. I love that companies are making tons of dolls and Barbie’s of all colors now. When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s I know most kids only wanted dolls that looked like them but I see kids not really caring about stuff like that anymore
How beautiful dolls , I had one early 90s with a very nice Barbie style, I don't remember the brand but she had eyelashes, articulated hands, long hair and a disco era outfit very Donna Summer
Oh Kenya is back now and with better hair that doesn't shed 😍😍😌 the creator Ruth sent me some from the NEW entire line and I also have the NEW 25th anniversary one that's exclusive to TJ MAXX and Marshalls and this summer I ordered a 90s one MIB on eBay
Thank you so much for sharing this! They still have some available on eBay so if I weren't customizing a Skipper doll into Barbara Rose Johns for my niece I would get the child one for her. I especially love the hair texture! It is so hard to find a Black doll that has realistic hair that can be styled.
omg the first doll is too cute! And I am Loving your blouse ! I don't remember POC dolls until I was to old to play with barbies when I was 12. I always wanted more Barbies with different ethnicities thought it was weird they didn't come in more shades of latte, chocolate and dark chocolate, espresso . .. The only option was an "Eskimo" doll later on that looked vaguely Asian and I thought it was weird . My parents didnt have alot of money so the most I had was 2 at a time because they got damaged and my mom threw one away.the others were gymnastic one that lost its arm and another white one who had pealing skin 0.0
I’m a doll collector. I have dolls from all over the world. My hubby laughs at me bc I always make certain my dolls have panties. I tell him that’s important. I had to laugh when you showed Kenya’s panties. LOL she’s really a cute doll.
Very late to viewing, but a small comment. I found it fascinating you mention coming hair bottom up "and there will be some shedding" in relation to kinky hair. My own hair is copper colored, western-Euro texture but I've always combed my own hair this way and had to pull stray hairs from the comb as I did so. I think it's maybe just a very sensible way to come hair? Or perhaps because my hair is not fine and has something of a wave to it? I also agree that that comb style works wonderfully.
Kenya is not new they rereleased those dolls in 2012 before that TYCO made them from 1992 to the mid 90s and after UNEEDA made them from 2003-2009 Kenya was one of those dolls I wanted as a child.
TevinGMedia Thank you for replying! I stated that it was released earlier, but the one Im reviewing was revamped in 2012. The Kenya doll was upgraded then. (see 1:10)
I am delighted to read your love of Kenya! I actually invented and designed her back in 1990, then sold her to Tyco Toys! :) I love reading such great fondness and memories! So nice to see your smile!
+KidzartDesigns FYI I invented the MAGIC HAIR LOTION and yes it did come with Tyco's Kenya doll..."Curly hair is really great, Magic Lotion makes it straight...BRAID IT! BEAD IT! She looks like me!...." Those were the words/lyrics to Tyco's commercial. The dolls will not be discontinued!
+KidzartDesigns please another toy company will make future Kenya dolls Kenya is the best African American hairstyling doll ever but the 2012 Kenya dolls were a downgrade
The kenya doll that you have is the worst doll i ever seen I still have my two Tycho Kenya dolls they are beautiful and the best quality and they came with styling lotion to*
