I remember seeing the _Victory_ as a youngster, on a family trip to the UK, over 50 years ago.
More recently, reading Patrick O'Brian's novels, I can try to imagine what it was like upon these warships: the routine and severe discipline of Navy life; the chaos of battle; the agony of the wounded under the surgeon's knife...

I can’t begin to imagine what they went through and the conditions they faced. I’m not sure if you’re aware but she’s going through something extensive renovations at the moment.

Thankyou!!! such a great video, I visited HMS Victory in October 2022 and was amazed by this beautiful ship. The men who sailed her and fought at Trafalgar were truly brave men led by an incredible leader in Lord Nelson.

It is currently undergoing major replanking, possibly up to 15 years worst case. Incredible weather damage and rot on the starboard side.

Why not build a roof so the ship can be preserved many hundreds of years? Thousands!

Fantastic. What a fricking monster even by today’s standards. Devastating broadsides. Are those all original guns? and shortened masts on it? I wish we could see the places it was damaged by Trafalgar

There are only two or three original guns on Victory, the weight of the guns would be to heavy for a ship in drydock, the ship would collapse, Back when Victory was still a fighting ship, any ship going into dry dock would unload its guns, onto a gunwharf, because of that reason, the gunwharf is still there just inside the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, but these days it is a shopping outlet. Victory is undergoing a massive restoration project, the masts were taken down a few years ago, as part of this process, and she is now, sadly, almost totally enclosed in scaffolding, and will be for a few years.

@@daneelolivaw602 The weight of the guns-do you mean what we’re seeing on those carriages in this video are like 18 pounders rather than original 24, or 24 rather than 36? What would have been the original armament? I’m assuming lighter guns as the decks go up, aside from nominal carronades on top deck

      @@ION400
The combined weight of all the original guns on Victory would be to heavy for her in drydock, they would fall through the bottom of the ship, as i mentioned in my previous comment, it was a normal procedure in the times of sailing warships that any ship would off load its guns before going into drydock, because of the weight problem.
Each gundeck has replicas of the type of gun that was on that gundeck at the time of Trafalgar.
At Trafalgar Victory carried 44 x 12 pound guns on the upper gundeck, 28 x 24 pound guns on the middle gundeck, and 30 x 32 pound guns on the lower gundeck, plus 2x 68 pound carronades on the main deck. All the guns, apart from about three are replicas, the only one i know of that is an original, is a 24 pound gun on the middle gundeck just next to the big cooking range you see in the video. The rest all seem to be made of a very hard plastic. you only need to tap them to know which guns are real. Victory is getting on for 265 years old, she needs looking after, even if she was still afloat i think those guns would be mostly replicas.

The cannon wood is still the same colour theu probably used the left over paint to paint them the same as the ships exterior!. As the British did in the 2 wars this is more their deser pink colour to probably the light stone or moddlestone being a Navy ship and seeing the paint chip documentary they did and being an armour modeller specialist in British war paint chips its definitely more of the light stone than the desert pink in the original chips and if i build this model of victory ever again it will be done in light stone

hi, why is there a cannon in the captains cabin, how much of the ship is original ?

    • @mrjamesb
      @mrjamesb  Рік тому +1

Hello 👋 I don’t remember seeing a cannon in the captain’s quarters and with regards to the originality of the ship there are certain sections that have been restored and replaced such as some of the timbers below decks etc. If you are planning a visit please be aware that she is undergoing a major refurbishment project for the next few years so it’ll be best to check the website for information. Thanks for commenting.

because in a battle those windows became another point to poke a gun out of protecting the rear of the ship

In action the walls or screens as they were known could be removed and the whole deck from bow to stern would be a gun deck. Some captains had the guns removed from their quarters and replaced with wooden replicas, known as Quakers
