Thanks for the terrific video! My issue turned out to be the metal contact tabs inside the light housing. They were not making contact with the small wire end fittings. These two wires (red and black) come from the back-up light module and are located in two plastic struts inside the light housing assembly. After I bent the tabs on the housing slightly upwards, and ran some emery paper over the contact areas of both the wires and the tabs, the entire light cluster started working again. I'm pretty sure the brake light bulbs were all okay, but as I had already replaced them, I left the new ones in.
Very helpful information. It may be worth noting that one cause for water in the lenses (other than cracked lens or bulb panel) is the recessed seal that sits in the bulb housing may be due for a change. Also, having the lens assembly off is a good opportunity to examine the area behind it for any corrosion starting to set in.

really appreciate the video. i have a 2008 A6 - after removing the nut, i had to gently pry the housing free from the front with a plastic tool. there are two pins that hold the non-bolted side of the housing that must come straight back to remove the unit.
Yes, that's what manual says. My car was used and abused, rear light light clusters lost their virginity way before I got there.

If replacing the bulbs doesn't help, as in my case, check the connection of the multi-pin to the bulb assembly. On my A6, the connecting pin for the ground wire (brown) was a little corroded. Remove the connector, lightly buff it with an emory board (don't scrape of the coating on the pin!), replace the connector and try to return all the bulbs you didn;t need to buy in the first place.

My Rear left indicator, reverse light, brake fail after about 10 minutes driving but come back on when I restart the car. I read somewhere I need to make a second earth point but I'm bloody lost.
If the tail light assembly does not come out as easily as in the video, get it reseated (as if you were going to put the bolt back on). Then pull on it from the outer edge (the opposite edge from where you just removed the bolt). The whole unit must come straight out from the outside edge - pulling on the inside edge will sometimes just 2 pins that you cannot see on the outside edge to snag. A thin flat plastic utility blade (smudger) like you would use in filling holes in your walls may help get the unit moving. For me, it needed a really good yank with my smudger and then it just popped out.

Yeah a crack in the lens has let water in and created a little bath for the indicator light! Its $600 for an after market full lamp replacement, so yep, did a super bodgy DIY job with my trusty 20 year old Weller soldering iron, while I wait for a $200 replacement lamp from eBay! fingers crossed!

How do we get rid of the errors on the dashboard after replacing bulbs?
I tried with OBD II, it connects to the ECU but it does not reset absolutely anything. I tried 2 different adapters and different apps.

You will not reset light bulb error with any diagnostics - there's something your car doesn't like about electrical parameters (resistance) of a bulb or cluster - check connections, wires or bulb themselves.

Classic Audi A6 problem: Water or moisture in rear light housing.
Fault: Bad sealant/glue holding outside glass to housing.
Solution: Apply a thin layer of plumbers transparent silicone on the outer edge all around. Also check seal of bulb holder.
5 minutes work and success guaranteed.
I have a 2006 A6. Passenger side rear directional light works correctly about half the time driving or with the engine running, but 100% of the time when the engine is off. Anyone have any similar issue, or have any advice? I should add, both rear directional lights blink when I lock and unlock the car with the key fob.

I took the bolt out with no problem. But I was still unable to pull the cover off. It seemed like something else was holding it. Did not want to use too much force. Please advise. Very helpful though.

Do you mean tightening torque? No idea. I don't think it matters that much in there - just go with the feel. Mind it's only plastic - don't over do it..

All VAGs don't like non-standard bulbs. It's quite hard to find LED that will keep ECU happy. Full list of the bulbs you can find on the website... Who's Marius?

Just found your video. I get an intermittent bulb out warning on my dash,for brake light. I just replaced the bulb,no light,and the warning is still there. any help?
+Quin -Bougie- Middleton Sometimes water gets inside clusters, the metal bits inside light get oxidized and lose contact. Even contact is not completely lost but resistance is too high, computer will switch that bulb off. Try to clean contacts, check the plug.

The left one is very similar, also held by a single nut. On some cars, both lights can sit a little tighter, so they need to be wedged out.

No, this model doesnt have mirror indicators. Mirrors have spotlights under the mirror. They have LED bulbs inside.

No. Just normal bulbs. LED only in central brake light in the rear window.

Jiaqi Zhao Yes. They are different, however instructions to replace will be the same - from inside they are similar.
Sorry this was wrong, I have an A6 sport 2004 there were the clips that made the light harness come away from the fixture, it was unnecessary to remove the fixture lens nor could that be done with a screwdriver or 13mm wrench, looks much smaller and it is four not two. Different Audi I guess. Thanks

Yes, once you unscrew it from inside - it's only a plug. But, please mind, if you are replacing with something different to your previous (like something custom with fancy LED's), it might need adoption (program it with computer) or maybe not if it's designed to be "plug and play".

Well when I'm driving my car all of the sudden the lights from the back stop working and they go back again ? I know it's not my light it has to do with the electricity wires so can u make a video of this problem
I don't have that car anymore, so can't make a video, sorry.. But, I had similar problem. It less likely would be wiring problem. What caused this problem to my car is - deteriorated seals on rear lights that let water in, then all that metal bits got oxidised. Try to take light apart and give a good clean to shiny metal, make sure that bulbs get good contact.

I don't think there are fuses for bulbs. Check wiring or contacts.

Any tips for changing the number plate lights? I know it sounds stupid but I can’t unscrew them. Anybody else had this issue? I don’t want to drill them out if I don’t have to
Mine were held by screws that were big pain to undo, because of the angle of number plate. You need either really long screwdriver, so handle goes pass the edge of the boot, or really short one. Once you undo them it's pretty easy. Be careful though if you are replacing conventional bulbs with LED - car might not like it.
No i just want to replace them as one is out so only half my number plate is illuminated but as you say the angle is so awkward. Dont want to chew the screw heads in the process!
You can also try little ratchet.. Maybe :)

For those curious, do you have to hold down the button for about five seconds for it to actually go off. It took me about two weeks, constantly having the air on, before I finally figured it out. lol. The "econ" button is what I'm referring to.

Arent you supposed to not touch the bulb with your bare hands because the oil causes the bulb to burn out faster? or is that just head lights?
Spear Terse Yes, you're right. Even if rear light bulbs are not so sensitive to grease as headlight bulbs, it's better to use some tissue. This video is one of my first videos, so I didn't think much :)

Yeah, it happens when car hasn't lost it's virginity yet ;) Manual says that after removing that bolt you need to take a plastic wedge and help it to get out towards rear of the car. Sorry it took me time to reply..
