What I remember during 3 trips to Maui, is its better to just stay close and be in the ocean. The packed flocks of tourists in rental cars clogging the roads is just assnine. Who wants to spend a vacation in a rental car? Traveling at 5 mph bumper to bumper............... its a novelty once, doing it again is brutal. And costs a lot of money. When you park the car, leave nothing in it, leave the windows down or the windows will be broken and everything stolen. Some dont know this.
As someone who used to frequent Hawaii. It is getting a little too much. The hotel price has doubled in the last few years, and hotel staff and services are reduced. Locals seems to becoming a little less welcoming tourism now. I just took a trip to Japan, where it’s cheaper and services are immaculate. Sure there is language barrier, but almost all public transportation, restaurants, and hotel are foreigners friendly. Guess where my next trip will be, Land of the Rising Sun.
Japan is a lot better choice, I lived there for a year, so many people over here, isn't it expensive? No its actually a lot cheaper there then in the US/Canada/Australia, and the service and food is awesome. A lot better public transportation options to.
@@jamespike5670 Japan used to be unbelievably expensive, but it has gotten a lot cheaper in the past decade, and a lot more accessible too for foreigners. Can't wait to go back.
Here's my prediction. Sometime in the not too distant future, an ultra Progressive President will help fulfill Hawaii's wish of independence. Hawaii will then collapse and who will come in for the rescue? China. Then the locals will be able to see which way was better. Just a prediction.

It’s only those working for tourism that want more money, most locals agree still way too many tourists I don’t think anyone is mad, just not as happy as the 80s when bananaramma had its cruel summer lol
I used to go every other year. It was getting more and more crowded, with reservations needed for everything from snorkeling to tonkatsu. The hotel rooms in Oahu were expensive and not very nice. I started to go to Mexico, where I give a $2 tip for delicious tacos and get the warmest andnmost sincere thank you.

Who likes tourists? They (W e) are, however necessary in a solely service based industry. That's what and all we (Hawaii) have to offer. THERE'S not enough land for acres and acres of inventory. Pick up and move on.
I lived there for 2 years. It's not about tourism. It's about race. The narrative is that White people stole their beautiful islands from them and left them to live in poverty. The "whiter" you are, the more pushback you get. If you have black hair and brown eyes and a tad of something other than European in your background, you might never notice it.
Wow! You're confused why tourism is down? Check the price of air fare, condos, rental cars, plus the high cost of food and gas. Easier (and cheaper) to go on a cruise!
I went to Oahu two years ago and was disappointed by the amount of homeless trash, the threat of having stuff stolen when you go out and the dinginess of what used to be nice areas. Won’t be going back anytime soon.
It’s too expensive to travel these days with higher airline, car rental, hotel and food costs. Also, Hawaii is the most unfriendly place I’ve been. I’ve experienced outright hostility towards me as an outsider. Beautiful islands, but not welcoming.

That’s just my experience.
I've had many friends black and white, Mexican and in between who have visited the islands. They said the locals even in the service industry are acting hostile and rude. Locals, you got what you wanted. Enjoy👍
We used to come to Maui every year. From the late 80’s on. Kaanapali shores. We started to notice a change about 2014. In 2019 we were harassed by some locals for surfing on “their” waves on the nw shore. It almost came to blows. We had surfed there for years and had very few problems. Later we went to dinner and the service was terrible. The price for four of us was $475 to get ignored. Our rental car was broken into and they tried to make us pay for the damages even though we had their insurance. We never went back. Too expensive and rude locals. Way better options and way cheaper to go to Mexico. We really liked going to Hawaii but we didn’t feel welcome anymore.
Haole’s aren’t the ones dumping garbage, old appliances, and burned out cars all over Maui. The hypocrisy is staggering. Maybe if locals, whose total lack of work ethic is legendary, would work as hard as they complain they could get ahead. Plenty of mainland people figure out a way to make it work cause they appreciate paradise more than many locals. Tough to hear but all true!
People don’t want to vacation where they aren’t welcome. I cancelled my trip last year, and another this year, to the U.S. State of Hawaii. Those thousands of dollars will be spent on vacations to other places around the world that are welcoming caring and respectful tourists with open arms and a warm smile.
From someone who’s made close to forty trips to Hawaii since 1961. The two main reasons for the decline in tourism are, the price of all lodging and the loss of the Aloha spirit from the locals.
Hard to give aloha when most people don’t have a place to live because long term housing is being used as short term vacation rentals by greedy property owners
What does one expect? Many local people, in multiple countries, are telling tourists "not to come." As well issues from inflation, weather, unrest, thievery. Places like Hawaii , and other countries need to make it their job to welcome tourists and keep them safe, as they are a large contribution for economic boost.
We went once, for my wife’s 30th birthday and the locals en masse treated us like pond scum. No more dollars from us. You’re not the only island to choose from. Lots out there treat us like kings
Locals are losing their Aloha. Was there in May…you could feel the hate. Also hotels are overpriced. I’ve been going there for 25 years….time to find a new place to send my hard earned money.
I live in Hawaii & many of the real locals have left due to high cost of living & been replaced with Micronesians & criminals being sent here with one way tickets & transplants from the mainland, don’t assume everyone here is local very few of us are left and when the real locals left so did the Aloha spirit
It’s always been expensive, the locals are unwelcoming at best and hostile at worst. We should have left them alone on their little island and let them be 1000 years behind
Not everyone voted for this. And everyone is sounding like a KAREN. Your ignorance is why natives and locals sometimes say those things. You are the reason for the way we feel that way. Make sense think hard about it. Mahalo nui loa for sharing your feelings. Have a great day.
I owned a second property on Maui from 2011 to 2023. Hawaii lost its sparkle for me. Everything tourist prices. Rental cars were unaffordable for a month visit. My property taxes went up 400%. Too many new usage fees. Utilities way overpriced. Wasn’t worth the visit to my own property! I left.
Boo hoo now imagine being born here and this what what you get.... Yes tourism is needed.... But it isnt the tourists that ruin it.... It's the people that buy up properties then jack up prices
Honestly for the last few years ive mostly heard negative things about Hawaii from people who visit. Usually some stories about locals being rude and even violent towards outsiders, the drugs and crime problems and just overall negative experiences. It’s not surprising at all that tourism is slowing down there, it’s 2024 there are tons of nicer places to vacation on earth that aren’t as expensive and have local populations that could really use the money.
When all you hear is we don't want tourists here and they make you feel bad for being there, now they are upset about slow tourism? Let's see them make it without the mainlanders. They got something to prove so let's let them prove it.
We had to pay a resort fee at a Hilton in waikiki and the pool was literally an above ground $600 pool with cinderblocks around it. I couldn't make sense of a resort fee for that.
"Resort Fee" is a junk fee that guests should push back against. We complained about a daily resort fee for services we had no interest in using at a Key West hotel and they credited us for $250.
During the pandemic the message was rightfully don’t come. It’s still don’t come. The message was loud and clear . I’m in the travel business in Las Vegas, Nevada and our tourism is gone way up. We are getting more international flights and making money in the hotels from people who are tipping as well as booking excursions. Tourism is our life blood and puts the roof over my head food on the table. I don’t forget that. People are now going to Mexico and the Caribbean, taste change.
Vegas is great. It might not have the beach, but the red rock and desert scenery are really nice, and the resorts, restaurants, and nightlife are top notch. Love how overtourism is embraced there and everyone is welcome.
Las Vegas has always welcomed tourists. Hawaii changed a lot. We went there two years ago. We’ve been multiple times over the last 30 years. They definitely don’t welcome tourists anymore. Even polite clean ones.

This told me the real people of Hawaii have been priced out of their community. It was like going to Harlem looking for the people, the culture and the historical buildings but instead seeing gentrification, franchises and the few remaining people looked like they were really struggling to hold on what they have left. I don’t know anyone that wants to visit either place more than once.
priced out of their community isn't an excuse, people all over the mainland are priced out of their communities too. Try buying a home in Cali, or Seattle, NYC etc. Better have a real good paying job.
The hotels need to take a serious look at their hotel rates and fees plus all of the taxes upon taxes! Every single thing you need to survive costs about twice as much as pre-Covid. And the last time I went, their desire to not feel touristy was evident. No Hawaiian music, no muu muus, no local flavor, etc. It felt like Ft. Lauderdale or any beach destination.

What about the Great Wall 2.0?
Haole’s aren’t the ones dumping garbage, old appliances, and burned out cars all over Maui. The hypocrisy is staggering. Maybe if locals, whose total lack of work ethic is legendary, would work as hard as they complain they could get ahead. Plenty of mainland people figure out a way to make it work cause they appreciate paradise more than many locals. Tough to hear but all true!
People don’t want to vacation where they aren’t welcome. I cancelled my trip last year, and another this year, to the U.S. State of Hawaii. Just respectfully curious. What other places around the world would you vacation at?

Yes I've seen that in the news. In Spain the locals just aren't acting hostile but are spraying water on tourists to let them know how they feel.

Basically another room tax. The supposition is that locals aren't paying it
Could be a fee on top of a fee.

Between a recession, inflation and being told locals don’t want tourism, this isn’t unexpected. Unless you actually believe the economy is what we’re being told.
😂😂😂
It is for the top few.
@@kitsiewr always will be, especially when they get their money from taxpayers
Goodness, how about lowering the hotel prices?!?!
Im on the same page with many other commenters here (people with common sense): locals are blaming their own numerous domestic problems (drug use, high costs of housing, gas, groceries) on tourists = scapegoating!
I was visiting Maui almost every year, but after this clear hostility I told my friends: I have no intention to come and spend my money at a place where I’m no longer welcome.
I will not allow locals to tell me where I can and cannot come (as a US citizen I will go anywhere in the US and when I want!) but hostility and racism towards visitors won’t make me enjoy my hard earned vacation.
Luckily I can take my money somewhere! So many non stop flights from SFO 😜
This year I already did 2 international trips (Europe and Asia) and have one more planned.
No more spending my dollars in Hawaii!
Thank you for all you do with these videos
