This is absolutely crazy. When has the public ever been asked if they want to pay more money for electricity? Never. Because if they were asked they wouldn't let them do things like this. And our amazing leaders know it.
When was the public asked whether they were ok with 40 million tonnes of forest being harvested each year to replace coal? Plus as you pointed out, paying more to do so! Biggest con on history
Ratcliffe power station is the only coal-fired plant in the UK to be fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission control facility, capable of reducing NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions by 70-95%. It is also equipped with a Flue-Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to remove sulphur dioxide (SO2) from the exhaust flue gases before they enter the atmosphere. With both SCR and FGD technology installed, Ratcliffe could meet the environmental standards in the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).
Coal on average has only been producing around 1% of the uk's energy, this power plant has been offline most of the time and is only rlly used during surges in energy usage,,we don't need to wait for 5 new nuclear power plants to replace this
What difference does it matter when wear all on the edge of a nuclear war .. and why is England pushing it so much one of the smallest countries in the world doing so much
Genius! Crippling energy costs and shortages. Well done, who needs affordable energy, cheap Russian energy etc?. Just as their military has been decimated, as goes The UK industry. Sad
"leading the world" in energy, yet supporting those countries who are industrialising through fossil fuel energy use to supply us goods that we used to make. Also trying to lead a world whilst telling us our history or leading the world was bad. Whole lot of irony going on.
Its a bit premature. If a coal power plant can be hooked up to a Carbon Capture system then there is absolutely no reason to not continue burning coal cleanly for power, coal is a cheap, widely available and most importantly, domestically available power source. The problem is the climate change pressure groups don't need or want to think rationally, they don't like coal for the same reason they don't like oil and gas, it represents big industry, its not about the climate, it never has been, its a rabid hatred of industrialisation and wealth. The problem is now that the tail is wagging the dog and these people are driving government policy rather than a sensible approach of a compromise to provide cheap, reliable and low carbon energy, the key there is compromise, there is no one size fits all solution, there needs to be a mix.
Clean coal technology captures 99% of the carbon when it is burned. Look it up: Ask Chat GPT "According to scientific evidence, what percentage of carbon emissions are captured by clean coal technology."
If we used our natural resource instead of imported oil and gas our electricity and heating would be cheaper the resources we have left globally are 139 years of coal 56 years of oil and 39 years of gas the ideal solution would be nuclear but we have to improvise until we build more advanced reactors

you only get carbon monoxide if there is insufficient oxygen. if the there is enough you ay get a small amount but it will be primarily carbon dioxide.
No! Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is one of the *primary* products of burning sub-bituminous coal in industrial coal power plants. It also produces toxic sulfur and nitrogen compounds as well as good old H₂O. Some carbon monoxide (CO) is produced as a small side reaction like in parts per million level. Yes, CO is very dangerous to humans and animals. But CO is also an unbalanced molecule so is not as stable, eventually turning into... you guess it CO₂! So CO is like doing double damage.

Now for the internal combustion engine. They can be removed quickly with affordable and integrated public transport. Gas can be reduced by banning gas cookers, it is not a difficult policy given the link to asthma and 8,000,000 sufferers in the UK. These are prudent and humane policies that need enacting.

Goodbye cole we will miss you and the whole cole family salute you including, Nat King, Ashley, Cheryl, joe, Andy and even good old carlton.
And now we are the most expensive country in the world for energy
The question is: If the Coal stops then the whole UK Heritage railway will have no coal and could be facing closed down.

The worst thing to do at this time, should wait until we have five new nuclear power stations.

Diversity is our strength.
This is a national disgrace.
Me think its been deliberately saved for a rainy day, its been the plan all along🤔🤔.
We need more coal power stations
Technology is available to reduce the environmental issues from coal
The public need educating on this.
And it's far cheaper.

Getting rid of coal is it not costing people more for heating ?

When you burn coal you get carbon monoxide not carbon dioxide. The monoxide is the more poisonous gas of the two.
