Derrick's level of talent was absolutely flawless at pipeline, by this year, and his boards were far superior to his competition's boards. Curren's board was the worst. This was when curren still didn't know how to backside tuberose, and Al still didn't know how to make a board on that level for the north shore, especially for pipeline, yet. I'd say of all the "Mister Pipeline" titled surfers, Derrick is the best, for flawless classic hawaiian style, and depth and length of tube rides.
