According to Wikipedia John Mayhew spent most of his life post Genesis working as a carpenter and living in Australia for several years. He died of a heart attack in 2009 in Glasgow.
I think I really understood and appreciated more Trespass when I realized there was a scene of pastoral prog. This eventually led me to Anthony Philips’ The Geese and the Ghost, which is a jewel level black belt in pastoral prog 👌
I've been listening to Genesis for almost 40 years, and I keep coming back to this album for all of the reasons you mentioned. It's a very different album compared to the rest of their catalog and what you'd think of as the Genesis sound, but at the same time still familiar. A top 5 Genesis album for me, no doubt about it. I really love what they do with the atmosphere here. It has a folksy, almost medieval vibe... but it also rocks. Interesting blend. Peter's vocals and Tony's piano especially shine here.
Phillips' playing is subtle but it still adds so much and I love hearing Peter's flute which is featured throughout the album. Those two elements alone make this album stick out from the rest. And the lyrics here, particularly on LFS, VOA, and Stagnation are some of there best and most vulnerable moments. Stagnation is still my 2nd favorite Genesis song.
Mayhew was fired in 1970, adding to quite a long list of firings from the public school snobs, being replaced by Collins, who added much needed fresh air. Mayhew passed away in 2008. Its been suggested that the musicians who got fired from Genesis actually hold that as a badge of honour. I suppose being sacked by 'prefects' is quite amusing. I just remember being given 'lines', and apple turnover beds.
I love this album, I’ve actually been doing a 70s Genesis marathon and LLDoB still has yet to grow on me, but I have a new appreciation for Back In NYC after hearing the Jeff Buckley cover
2:13 I think you put Pink Floyd there by accident. Not a single pop song on their debut album and it isn't really that accessible. Can agree with the rest though and the album is a masterpiece.
Great review, I feel the same in what you telling about this Fantastic Genesis album all songs are just Magic I love White mountain ! thanks for bringing it back in the spotlight
It does get overlooked. Phillips painted an Arcadian picture with his input. And Gabriel's voice was at its purest here. I find its production smoother than Nursery Cryme.
This album was my second ever Genesis album after Turn It On Again: The Hits…sooo yeah, it was a HUGE AWAKENING. Love love LOOOOVE this album. Especially Stagnation, and just the overall peaceful fantasy like vibe of the album
This is a good album, and if people compare it to their contemporaries of that timeframe it holds up very well. I liked the first album as well but I know I may be in the minority.
Jokes aside this is a very underrated album , I think that Stagnation is my favourite track ! Visions of Angels the worst although that’s not bad , a 7/10 album , better albums were to come !
Last comment . On the previous comments I suppose they were middle class twats , I feel the biggest twat was Banks who’s a self opinionated one too never really praised anyone and just likes to moan about things ( especially Gabriel & Hackett my 2 favourite members) , and Rutherford to a degree, never felt Gabriel was like that and more down to earth. Steve and especially Phil more working class heroes I suppose and they resonate more with me . Btw a nice and concise review!

White Mountain is my fav.. Pre dating the GOT Dire Wolves by decades.. Very visual storyline..

I do agree this is a much underrated/overlooked Genesis album. It’s the first Genesis album I got so it has sentimental meaning for me.
My favorite Genesis album. Not their "best", but has a unique vibe and magic.

Trespass is so fresh and full of poetry... Can't live without it.
Also, Anthony Phillips’ solo career is NEXT LEVEL GOOD STUFF
A strong follow up, but i still think that they are still trying to find their feet

Good points made !
Please do such a video for each Genesis album 😍

An album I often return to and I agree it is overlooked. criminally if you ask me.

Yes. Early Floyd was anything but accessible.
This album has grown on me. I listen to it more these days.

Great review! This album to me is a little slice of magic

Ant was very important for Trespass.
Oh, and here's a fun thing for Genesis fans: check out Ant's song called "F#", and see if it sounds familiar 😉
Trespass is so beautiful and groundbreaking, really awesome
Great review just going off to listen to it first time in a while
I haven’t listened in a couple of years now, I need to listen to this gem again
Very nice review for indeed a pretty overlooked album. Do you plan to cover Anthony Phillips solo work in the future ?

Have you heard Pulsar? Progressive rock band from France 🇫🇷
Great album that stands a bit alone in the Genesis didcography.
Your mane is looking good !

Collins was pissed up most of the time - he gave Chester an awful time, blaming him for (wait for it)
Not keeping time !!!!!!!!!!
Pipers at the gates of dawn is not accessible
Killer album!!!
I really like this album, but the next four or five can't be reached in my humble opinion.
