    Is calling white people "Caucasian" really a thing outside America and Asia? I never heard it until I got to the US, and then in Asia people wanted to "eat caucasian food".

    Just a little point. I think skin color is a adaptation to environment. Pigmentation protects one from the sun. Also lack of pigmentation promotes the production of vitamin D. Light skin is a environmental advantage in northern places while dark skin had a advantage in equatorial places.

If you get tons of sun like in Africa you need more melanin to protect you and if you live somewhere that gets less sun like Norway you need less melanin in order to absorb the most sunshiney goodness possible.

      That idea seems to have been replaced in recent years, we're finding that early migrants into Europe actually retained their original coloring until agriculture became the main source of food. For some reason a grain-heavy diet was missing some nutrients that previously hunter-gatherer humans had been consuming, and this lack of certain nutrients gave a very swift rise in favor of lighter skin. The darker skin being better for sun-heavy areas is definitely still an obvious survival advantage, but we know now that it isn't enough of a problem in northern climates to have caused the entire population to shift from dark brown to ghostly white. Also - it doesn't always hold up even with groups who are known to have populated a given area for thousands of years - think of say middle eastern peoples who while generally not as light as scandanavians are definitely not anywhere near as dark brown as human skin can be.

    Better question yet: why do we call people White or Black? Last time I looked in the mirror I was not a snowman or a blank piece of paper. I'm actually kind of pinkish-orangeish.
    And "black people" aren't actually black either, judging by a crayon box. And for some reason you can't call someone "negro" even though that's spanish for black.
    And while you can call Europeans white and Africans black you can't call Asians yellow or Native Americans red. Keeping in mind that none of them look like that to begin with.
    This classification system is all kinds of fucked up.

    • @eruditootidure2611
      @eruditootidure2611 6 років тому +12

      Historically, a lot of groups used to use "black" and "white" as synonyms for "dark" and "light", respectively, when referring to humans. The Ancient Greeks, for example, called darker-skinned Greeks "black" and lighter ones "white", even describing Odysseus as turning from white to black when a spell returns him to his youthful appearance. When Europeans first started sailing down the Western coast of Africa and more regularly interacting with Sub Saharan Africans, these Africans were overwhelmingly darker than the average "black" European (not counting the relatively small minority of Sub Saharan African traders who lived in various parts of Europe prior to the 15th century). As such, they were considered universally black, and as the appearance of "Black" Africans became rooted in the public consciousness, darker skinned Europeans started being viewed as "white" by comparison.
      It's interesting to note that for a very long time, other dark skinned people like Indians, Native Australians, and certain Southeast Asians were also called black. I'm of Indian descent, and within my Indian-Australian mother's lifetime, she was considered black. I'm not sure why people have tended to shift toward calling Indians "brown" rather than "black", even though other groups with brown skin, like Africans and, often still, Aboriginal Australians, continue to be called "black".

      @@eruditootidure2611 A surprisingly erudite reply, thanks. It's a comprehensible explanation but I'll still refuse to call my afro-dutch friends black. They call themselves black sometimes and that's fine, but I won't reduce them to this incorrect descriptor. I don't want to be called white, because I'm not. I'm the tall guy with the funny hair, and my name is Vincent.
      But that's were the base of the issue lies, doesn't it: every person is so individually different from the next, but we still try with all our might to reduce big swaths of people to their smallest common denominator because we don't want to invest the time and effort to acknowledge their individuality. It took many cultures centuries to even acknowledge other cultures as being human and not just as mongrels and barbarians. People on smaller sexual spectrums have to fight to be recognised as separate groups among the LGTBQ community. Right wing parties paint all minorities as criminals to create a perversely simplified picture of "the bad other".
      I just want to do my part of raising awareness even among my friends by not tagging people with ancient labels that have no place in a modern society.

      And even in Scandanavia, the difference between a Finnish person and a Swedish person is incredible. The Finn speaks a different language, has different blood (Mongol), looks different, governs themselves differently, has a different history, etc. And it goes beyond borders, for instance. Important is to be human but i Just say. The Origin of White people is in Northern Caucasus, Georgia, Albania, Serbia. Our culture today in Mountains is a Proto European culture. After Islam CAME to caucasus the People changed more Like arabs a Lot but Not all. Our caucasian Adat was Based on the jewish Torah laws. Adat is a hebrew/Arab Word, originally hebrew. Even today Lot of caucasian words is from Hebrew. In Georgian in chechen Lot of words are Same Like jewish.... Caucasians are one lost Tribe of the tribes of Israel i think. BecAuse they look 1:1 Same Like jews and even the culture of caucasian is Similar to jewish Traditions Like women clothing. But the caucasians forgot the Most since they stopped living after the Torah and later they became Muslim, almost The Same but with too much Arabic influence For me. But respect to all doenst Matter Christian jewish Muslim .. is one Family in the end everybody believe 99% Same Prophets.

We don't need democracy and other laws that people have come up with. I would like to note one important thing, in connection with the situation at the airport in Dagestan. For all the people who don't understand, let me make it simple:
    A bunch of skulls were found in the caucus mountains and measured, one of the distinctive features was the high bridge, slender nose and lips.
    The SKULLS were named as Caucasian skulls after the caucus mountains where they were found.
    At that time a bunch of scientists were measuring skulls and trying to categories the "RACES"?
    The skulls found in the mountains were classified as Indo-Europeans from India, north Africa, middle East and fucking EUROPE!!!! To reference certain skull features.
    All white people have the features of the Caucasian skull (and believed to be ancestors of the skulls as humans moved into Europe).
    That's why they are called Caucasian!!!!!
    But obviously, a middle Eastern person with Caucasian skull features can be Caucasian too.
    It has nothing to do with being from the caucas mountains.
    The skulls were named after the mountains because they were found there!!!!

Aren't we all "technically" the human race? Hell, take a look around yourselves. Some people care more about treating plants, insects, animals, even parasites with more respect than we give each other. Worried for their futures and survival, while at the same time, cursing the driver in front of us(regardless of race or gender) for driving too slow on our way home with McDonald's. Yes we are as far as we know the most intellectual species, but only to find how ignorant we truly are. We've pulled ourselves OUT of the circle of life to become the most advanced species, and forgotten how it all works naturally.
    Nature will survive our insignificant life spans.

      Race is a term largely used to stratify groups of people during the colonial period, used by white people. Being white has also changed throughout time as Jews, Irishmen, and Italians used to be excluded from this category. America is honestly just obsessed with labeling and categorizing people as a way to delineate the privileged and the unprivileged…. And the enslaved. Before these absurd delineations, no one really faced immense discrimination or prejudice even the enslaved. Race generally, for the majority of human history, insinuated some form of kinship. People would usually describe someone via their national allegiance more so than our contemporary meaning of “race”.

      Ahh yes a racist African. No, even though I’m not European, Europeans are NOT Caucasians. The reason why they adopted that calling today (the US) is because it carries that “perfect human made by God” status. As you know when it comes to the US, “superiority” is key of course the American white would want to be label as “Caucasians”.
      Majority of ethnic European groups did not derive form the Caucasus area. The earliest Europeans migrated from the Levant, and straight into Europe. That’s why Europe is the earliest region of the world to adopt to human farming culture technique outside the Middle East (being the oldest).
      Sub-Africa only started mass farming 200+ years ago.

    There are some indications that man’s first recognized civilization came from the Caucuses, with the Aratta people. We don’t know much about them, but they preceded the Ancient Sumerians by thousands of years. And they are the first instance of swastikas (on their pottery & petroglyphs). It is thought some moved into the Gobleki Tepe region of Turkey, while others made their way to the Indus Valley of India.

      American Freedom-Fighter -Don’t laugh too hard. The Caucasians at least might be. Research who the Anunnaki were (The little “g” gods of old, in Ancient Sumer). Some wonder if these “Aratta” were the mysterious “Scythian” people. Others go further saying that they were also what we now call the “Nordics”, an alien species that conspiracy sorts say worked with the Nazis, assisting them during WW2, filling Hitler’s head with Aryan superiority & master race inevitability. So many conspiracy drenched rabbit holes & controversial connecting passages, you might never exit the same person as you entered. The more you learn about the Anunnaki, the more you will realize how little everyone knows about our own history, our own religions (plural) & our own science. As Graham Hancock says, “we are a species with amnesia,” our own history much longer & more complicated than you ever imagined. (I did a lot of name & people dropping there in case you want to google any of it. But I’m dead serious about it leading to a maze of connecting rabbit holes)

    This is a great informative video. It has inspired me to think about, and ask this:
    When do we begin to look beyond external physical characteristics and finally understand that we are all human beings? I'm a person with light skin. There is a person with dark brown skin. Over there is a person with red skin. Male, Female, Pale, Dark and every variance and combination thereof. These are my people. Overemphasis on race and gender, to classify different people, and their perceived roles and stereotypes, is a human creation. It is too common to fear what is different. And that fear can lead to a dislike or even hatred in extreme cases. Yes, we are, and will always be different from one another. We do indeed have physical traits that are different from region to region. Those traits exist for specific reasons. Whether you believe it is evolution or God's plan, those differences exist. What we as human beings need to do, is to learn not to fear what we don't closely relate to. We all have hearts minds and souls. Our blood is the same red. Our loves and desires differ very little. Everyone loves another human, or even many other humans. Every person wants happiness for themselves and those they love. We have the capacity to love other humans. So that means we also have the capacity to love *ALL* other humans. As brothers, and sisters. As equals. As kin and countrymen/women. As a divided humanity, we will not internally progress much more. As a unified humanity, we can overcome those fears and be better to each other and ourselves, and have brighter futures. Nobody is perfect. I am far from it! Despite all that tries to divide us, and classify us as different, we are but one race. We. Are. Humanity.

    edit for spelling error

    Because the world was being explored intensely at that time, naturally ( as in the past as well) people were trying to explain the origins of the races. One popular theory at the time was that people from the Caucus mountains and surroundings migrated north and from there to Europe and Northern Asia as well as south to India. Since that was the supposed origin, that name was chosen and it stuck. Interestingly a 1.8 million year old group of skulls was recently found in the region, so maybe they were on to something.

    • @mikeaskme3530
      @mikeaskme3530 4 роки тому +4

      @Robb Hewitt, true but unfortunately none of these early race scientist including Bloominbauch left Europe, and they were doing this by skull shape in some instances. That is why a now they say a East African is Caucasion, but a West African is Negroid, and a South African is, well they have not came up with a name there because simply put. The African continent is where mankind came from and you will see every human variation of skull type there is among the African population and it has nothing to do with interracial breeding as some would assume.

      No you whites come from no parts of Africa , you are not from the land of the sun child , then traveled to Europe and turned white because it was cold. You wannabes, are Neanderthals. That’s who your ancestors are, and what the white race derived from. The caves in Europe. The Neanderthals were an uncivilized.. savage of ppl , in fact they are not even considered human, white ppl have Neanderthals blood. We ppl of color at that time were homo sapiens , which is human an it was only one race of ppl that were homo sapiens Africans… the negro race.
      You know white ppl are so delusional , they’ll do anything to paint themselves as part of African history because it holds the most advanced society.

  • @wackyruss

    In Russia and the former USSR the term Caucasian (кавказец - kavkazets) refers specifically to the Caucasus Region in southern Russia (Dagestan, Chechnya etc.) along the Caucasus Mountains as well as Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Although a mix of Muslim and Christian communities as well as many different languages, there is a general culture (food and dress) that unites this area and gives it a distinct “Caucasian” style. Also, many real Caucasians are darker complected compared to the “white” Slavic Russians so that further confuses the true meaning of the term Caucasian. After living in and traveling the former USSR I feel really silly checking a box for “Caucasian” back in the States because I’m not really from the Caucasus region!

    Well, of course, race is a complicated issue but I don't think "Caucasian" only refers to "white" people. Caucasians range from Scandinavians to Slavs to Magyars to Italians and Greeks to Turks, Arabs, Persians, Indians, Afghans, etc. There are light and dark members of all races.

  • @HenkJanBakker
    @HenkJanBakker 6 років тому +4

    Very nice and succinctly put. Almost leaving out the politics and racial bias that made Americans pick these describers. (Because basically it is only used in the US on your drivers license or when the popo is looking for you.)
    Just a note about science in those days. It was pretty normal to do research on a subject not to test a theory but to confirm a theory or social bias often bases biblical 'facts'. It was pretty much expected even. Proof that white is best.
    When Blumenbach basically started to refute his own research (as that is what it seemed like he did) he was actually 'peer reviewing' his own ideas as most scientists viewed it as confirming that 'white is best'. He postulated that culturally embedded racism was not the way to view his findings, and perceived absence of intelligence and anything 'white culture' saw as inferior in other races was just an opinion that had no scientific bases what so ever. There was just the way to describe different people. He scrapped the conclusions that this could be used to 'rate' people completely. But damage had been done and his system has been hijacked by smaller minds. So there seems no escaping this or it's racist context.
