    I just love our California quail! The bobcat was quite the bonus. What a gorgeous animal! Coyotes in Golden Gate Park?! 😮 That blows the mind. Enjoyed the video, thanks. Happy birding!

      The California quail are very, very cute and cool. It was fun seeing the moms with the coveys of babies.

      It was exciting! I’ve been closer though… One time in Texas one came within 2 feet of me along a trail. I flinched and it spooked into the brush!

    The bobcats in the SF bay area seem to be quite tame, probably becuse there are so many protected parks and preserves where people are so common they are used to us. Really enjoy your videos.

    You are a brave man walking through those areas where you can't see your feet. There is a healthy population of Northern Pacific rattlesnakes in that area

    • @SparkyStensaas
      @SparkyStensaas  5 місяців тому +1

      Not brave… Just ignorant! I did not know about the rattlesnakes :-) Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than smart I guess. That said, I would’ve loved to have seen that species of snake!

    I feel your pain on the Sooty Grouse. They were my nemesis bird for a few months when I lived in Roseburg Oregon and would go for birding hikes in the coastal mountains to the west of town. I kept hearing them but it took a few months before I saw one. It was up in a tree and I was able to get some pics and a short video.

    • @SparkyStensaas
      @SparkyStensaas  5 місяців тому

      At least you got a better look and some photos! I will need to get a “make good“ sighting of this bird in the future.

    Awesome video once again Sparky! I have been to SoCal and birded about 10-20 times without seeing the Scaly-breasted Munia as well! Funny thing is, everyone tells me "they are like House Sparrows down here! Absolutely everywhere!" I think it's a myth ;)

      Ha! Yes, after talking with JT_Birds sounds like some folks find them instantly and others it takes many times. JT_Birds has made 7 unsuccessful trips. Then when he gets home someone has just posted them on eBird in the same spots he just was!

      @@SparkyStensaas We saw Munia in the San Diego area a few years back when visiting relatives. We hooked up with a local birding group while we were there. Tecolote Canyon Nature Trail, across from the parking lot at house feeders in someone's yard. Feeders may be the key. Also Mast Park in Santee.

    Great series! Does that squeaking work in the Bog?? The only Bobcat I have seen there was running across the road!

    • @SparkyStensaas
      @SparkyStensaas  5 місяців тому

      Hi Andrew, I’ve blindly squeaked in many things, including Great Gray and Saw-whet owls, Pine Marten, Ermine, Coyote, Canada Jay, Red Fox… but I don’t think I’ve ever squeaked in a bobcat before this time :-)
      Usually, I see them on roadkill deer in Sax-Zim in winter… but that is also a rare event.

    When you were filming the Red-breasted Sapsucker I heard what sounded like a Robin and a Bell's Vireo but Bell's aren't in that area. What was it?

    • @SparkyStensaas
      @SparkyStensaas  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi BirdbrainBrian. The Robin likes song was the Western Tanager. I will look into that other song and get back to you. I’m not sure what that might’ve been yet.
