    Winter is coming... I plan to make another video at some point to show it's performance if/when we get a good proper storm. It might just be a short video, I'll see.

      I just finally ordered this last week and is coming this Friday. My version will have 2 5ah batteries in them (not 3 which I assume you said yours got 3 4 ah batteries). Unfortunately, the last few days the item got lost in shipping and got really upset nothing was happening but was quickly found so no idea how it got lost in shipping. Also where I live two days of thunderstorms line up when they are delivering it so I hope they might delay it until next Monday or bring a big plastic bag to cover it up. Actually, when yours got delivered, was there a big plastic covering from shipping or was the top cardboard box exposed?
      And I also got there chainsaw as well 18 inch.

      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому

      Interesting, I guess they changed the design then, or is there still 3 battery slots? I found most of the time I was ok using only 2 batteries, so 2x 5ah will go well either way. When they shipped it to me they actually had the local courier call me to schedule delivery, it shows up in a box truck and they have to lower it, so you'll want to be home when it arrives. If I recall it was in plastic though, but I don't know if I'd want it out in a thunderstorm either.

      @@redsquirrelftw Hey there, sorry for the delay in response, so I got it all setup and ready to go now! Yes the 2 stage snowblower definitely takes 3 battery slots on it, so its the same as yours (well they only sell one 2 stage right now, I would be curious in the future if Greenworks might consider making a bigger housing/auger for clearing up to 30" someday to match the gasoline ones on the higher end side of things for blowers). Its was quite a chore taking apart the freight box it was in because of the metal bars with the bolts. I used at first a socket wrench (mine wasn't high end actually) and I broke 2 socket adapters on the metal bar bolts on the cage it was in because there was a couple that were tightened way too much (I did not break the handle or the socket it was attached on the adapter thankfully but I did rough it up a bit). There was one bolt below on the left wheel (you might remember this) that was in a very tight space, I had to use a very narrow wrench to get the nut to not turn with the bolt. After I broke the socket adapter, I used two vice clamps to get the rest of the bolts off (which is why it was a chore, I guess I wasn't fully prepared to deal with the unpacking of this very well). Once I got down to being able to put the snowblower chute together and the handle together, those were no issue thankfully very easy. After I finished putting it together, the only part that was a bit problematic and I did not realize I was SUPPOSED to have a second person to help me with this, was lifting the blower off the metal frame it was sitting on, so I rolled it off moving it backwards but I hit the bottom of the metal of the blower on the frame unintentionally. Thankfully, I looked on the bottom of the blower and I did not see any scratches. The directions never mentioned about any part of the unpacking process and I only discovered Greenworks unpacking video afterwards, they really should have included directions about how to unpack this properly to people, especially on how to get it off the pallet. Anyway despite the annoyances with getting all together and off the pallet, I tested it to make sure its working and all seems to be working fine! So where I live now, no snow has come yet, so it may be about a month or two before any snow might come. The weather is predicting a much warmer winter this year so we may not get enough snow this time around. I live in Wisconsin so Winters have been kind of on and off for snow, mostly happens around December to March now for actual snow.
      After the delay in shipment, one of the customer service reps sent me a $100 gift card as an apology and I bought their work light on the Greenworks site and right now I have enough points almost saved up to get another $100 gift card as well. So they really went above and beyond with there service they provided to me!
      I also managed to get through a warranty replacement a brand new 80 volt 21 inch lawnmower as well completely for free, I asked about replacing the back rubber flap on my old 21 inch lawnmower, but they could not directly replace it so they could only send a new one for free, so I managed to get a free more upgraded one over the old one that can only take one battery slot, the new one takes two battery slots and I tested it this past weekend on my lawn and I could get the whole lawn done with two 4 ah batteries without a break for charging (before I could only get about around half the lawn done before I had to go back in the house to exchange the battery). After I got the two stage snowblower (since it came with two 5 ah batteries), you want to know what is crazy (I thought I would get a battery-less one) and I was thinking with the gift card I would use it to buy another 5 ah battery, I got a third 5 ah battery for free with the new lawnmower!! So now I can use three 5 ah batteries with the two stage snowblower! Also, the new lawnmower now has an indicator to show how much power you have left on the batteries near the handles and it has a turbo button but this drains the batteries faster (my old one did not have any of these options).
      BTW I just decided to order the 22 inch 80 volt snowblower to replace my 20" snowblower I bought a couple winters ago now which seems like its more of a powerhouse over the 20". Also I do own the 80 volt power shovel I say you mention in another video a while back, I don't like that as much as using a snowblower. So soon i'll own all fours of the 80 volt tools they have on offer now.
      Sorry for the crazy long post, its been a wild month with the Greenworks tool purchases, shipping, etc. for me at least! I should be done soon for the rest of the year as I got basically everything I want now.

    • @redsquirrelftw
      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому

      Haha it's almost like an addiction once you get into these power tool platforms. And yeah I had a bit of a hard time getting it off the skid too and did end up scraping the bottom the same way you did, and I found it annoying that they used two different bolt sizes for the steel frame. I should have made a little ramp to get it off but I was too lazy.

    • @Finger112
      @Finger112 Рік тому

      @@redsquirrelftw Greenworks should include a recyclable wood ramp or a big rubber ramp that is level with the pallet it was on so it doesn't require a second person to help. I think my biggest issue with the entire unpacking was that it requires you have a second person when it assumes you should have a second person to help (even getting the cardboard box off they said recommends a second person!). Don't get me wrong, I like there tools but they need to work on there packaging for dissassembling some more so its more of a one man job sort of deal. Its a big unit, I get it. I double checked again this past weekend to see if there was scratches on the bottom and thankfully I got away with it, completely clean! There was a few minor blemishes on the plastic on the upper parts of the unit but that was about it.
      One thing that would have helped getting over the metal lips of the frame with the wheel is being able to take off that lip metal bar off the frame by either unbolting it somehow. If those were not soldered behind the wheel or in front of the unit, that would have also helped not potentially damaging it.
      Do you recommend any sort of anti-rust coating solutions to keep the metal in good shape?

  • @stivy58
    @stivy58 10 місяців тому +1

    Got mine today. Packaging is different now. No more metal framework. I got the two 5.0Ah batteries. I already had three 4.0Ah ones so hopefully it will handle any snowfall. I did have trouble getting the batteries to charge at first. It was less than 40F today so, as you noted about the cold, maybe that was the issue. I will be taking the batteries and charges inside for the winter. Looking forward to 1st snow. I installed the ARNOLD Deluxe Universal Snow Thrower Cab because the wind swirls in every direction here. The cab is pretty light weight and fit well. Winter is coming...

    I have purchased the 80V one ( with 3 modules x 20 batteries each) to allow for future power expansion. These modules have only 4 Ah of power capacity each. But, one can get replacement with much higher Ah power. There are no more rooms for the 60V one (with 3 x 14 batteries each). Also, there is a huge price drop for lithium due to automobile (gas and EV) price war going on right now. It will be good to buy higher Ah battery module in the near future.
    All consumer based snow blowers use the standard 18650 batteries which have one size only (18mm x 65mm). They are different in their Ah (ampere-hour) capacity and drain current (CDR continuous discharge rate).

  • @parkgee9848
    @parkgee9848 Рік тому +2

    By the way, one of the reason why these li-ion batteries INR18650-20R or 25R don't last after a few years is because of over heating during the discharging period (i.e. plowing the snow). The key is to keep these batteries from over heating by placing the auger at slow speed and keeping drive speed at a minimum.

    • @redsquirrelftw
      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому +1

      Yeah they can get warm if I really push the machine hard, that does worry me a little as it definitely is not good for the batteries. If there is a big snow fall I make sure to put 3 batteries in to share the load more, even if I could probably do it with 2. But even with 3 when I recently cleared the recent storm they were warm after I was done. We had 50cm or so of snow recently so I really got to put it to the test, when I cleared the path to the shed the snow was going over the auger. It still cleared though but it was definitely working hard. I was easing on the drive so I'm not just ramming it in there full tilt.

    • @parkgee9848
      @parkgee9848 Рік тому +1

      @@redsquirrelftw I am not sure that they are using the right INR18650 Li-ion batteries with high drain current (CDR continuous discharge current) max. feature of at least 20A. I suspect the modules will fail after a few years or months. There are only a few 18650 batteries that can do the job.
      So, I am preparing plan B which is the purchasing of low cost spot welding fixture, and low cost charging/testing equipment (i.e. Lii-600).

    If you order this from the company where do you take for repairs when something goes wrong with. 80V is better than the EGO blower I see there is lots of power for the size of your driveway thats perfect. I am in Ottawa and I have a single stage and I am thinking of upgrading to a 2 stage electric. I have a 2 car driveway 20x10" and the other driveways I do this would;d do the job. There is a kit for the EGO blower 4 56V 10A batteries $3000,00 . thanks for the video .

    • @redsquirrelftw
      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому

      That's the tricky bit, there's not really anywhere to bring these. I do have a battery that a small piece of solder fell out of, and since it's under warranty instead of opening it I just did a warranty replacement, waiting on that to see how that goes. Worse case scenario if something happens to the machine itself there's probably not much to it, and they'll just send you the parts you need. Even with my gas one trying to get that in the back of the truck was not fun, so it was still a pain to bring it somewhere.

    I am looking at probably selling my Ariens Gas Two Stage Snowblower as we screwed up the sparkplug on it and we flood the tank to many times due to lack of experience so we accidently crossthreaded the spot where the sparkplug would go (and it doesn't run that well now because of this) and I have invested over the last number of years into Greenworks tools including the batteries and the single stage snowblower (plus the amount of times we run the snowblower is very few amount of times) and I just prefer the simplicity of a tool like that we barely use where you can just put the batteries in, close the cover and start it up, compared to the mess you have to deal with gasoline snowblowers. One of the tools I have been waiting for is for Greenworks to make a two stage snowblower. The price on this is crazy expensive but this looks worth getting this because of the investment I made into the Greenworks platform. I also have the Greenworks 21 inch as its OK but the flap on the back has really torn too much (so some of Greenworks tools are a hit or miss but overall I really like there tools). If this came battery-less, then I think the price on this would drop probably close to $1000, since it comes with three is why its so expensive.

    • @redsquirrelftw
      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому

      If you get it on sale it's actually not too bad, have to keep an eye out. When it drops to $2,000 it's about on par with a similar sized gas one. The nice thing is the 4ah batteries it comes with are same physical size as the 2ah ones, so they will work in chainsaw and other tools too. The bigger batteries work in those tools too but are just more awkward.

    Nice review! I have order the same package after a few weeks of investigation.
    Let me tell you a bedtime story.
    "Long long" time ago in a place "far far" away, a farmer hides 3 monkeys with "eye sight" problem to take care of 3 groups of horses with 20 horses in each group. One day, he wants them to pull one very large loaded wagon to a place not far from the farm.
    At the last minute, he decides to use only 2 monkeys and 2 groups of horses to do the job. The result is that some of the horses end up sick or dying due to overwork.
    What is the moral of the story? If the farmer has used all 3 groups of horses to do the job, everyone will have live happily ever after.
    "The end"
    Can anyone guess why the monkeys have "eye sight" problem?
    In our case, the horses are the individual batteries. The monkey is the BMS (Battery Management System) in each battery module. The very large loaded wagon is the snow.
    Probably, all BMS circuitries from all companies are not designed to be smart. A smart BMS combining with a smart charger would have charged each battery equally during charging period to prolong the life span of each battery.

    Thanks for the video. I am curious how it handles with a full width pile of snow, not just the half widths it looked like you were going through. Do you think it can handle a full 2ft deep driveway full of snow?

    • @redsquirrelftw
      @redsquirrelftw  Рік тому

      We only got a few good snow dumps after I made the video, but I did use it in about a foot or more of snow at one point, full width, and it performed well. I could hear that the motor was forcing more but it still was able to handle it. We also got wet snow at some other occasion and it powered through that as well. If trying to go through older snow, like snow that's already established in the yard, the biggest issue is traction, it will not be able to go through as the wheels just spin. But with a regular gas snowblower this is an issue too, so you have to break up the snow first. I'm hoping we get more snow next year so I can do a more proper video of showing it's performance.

    As of now, we should forget about the LFP type of batteries as used in most EV automobiles.
    Chinese battery giant CATL plans to start this year 2023 the mass production and delivery of batteries based on a new materials technology M3P, which will perform better and cost less than nickel and cobalt-based ones. M3P batteries will have greater energy density and perform better than lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) batteries. They will also be cheaper than nickel and cobalt-based batteries as announced by Elon Musk of Tesla. I hope that they make 18650 batteries from M3P material.

      In canada the 60 volt come with 5Ah battery, also you should know that Ah alone does not dictate the battery capacity, you have to take into account voltage. So a 5Ah@60volt = 300Wh worth of energy, while the 4Ah battery at 80v is 320Wh, so the 4Ah of the 80v have more total energy than the 60v.
