Audiences with Moritz von Oswald are few and far between. For years, he and his partner Mark Ernestus avoided the prying eyes of the media, creating a mystique that was almost as powerful as their records. Having practically invented minimal techno with Basic Channel, they then moved into the twilight world of dub, creating the Rhythm & Sound alias to explore the spaces beyond the bass line.
In this rare appearance at the 2008 Red Bull Music Academy, Moritz von Oswald talks about dub, his relationship with the New York reggae sound of Wackies and how his work has spawned a thousand imitators.

Thank you for the complete transcript!
I never thought in a million years he would do an interview - this must be the only one ever recorded?
There is a second interview with him in Chicago or Detroit here on UA-cam.
i really wanted to know more about his approach to production and how he made those rhythm & sound records so rich. clicked on this and every mouth breather asking in depth questions made me feel like im much better searching for that sound in my own work. this guy clearly doesnt want to give it up.
As a non expert body language expert, I would say Moritz is trying to escape the interviewer while remaining on the couch.
@@osi303 Sometimes it's just bad questions. Where did you get that statistic from by the way - I heard that 52% of all statistics are made up.
This interviewer has so many bad interviews for RBMA
he seems like such a nice, genuine guy
I think RedBull shoudl reupload this with the music being put as example, uncut.
Otherwise it loses much of its' richness.
He did a lot for minimal Techno along with the detroit founders Jeff Mills etc. Fusing Dub more pronounced to the 124-127bpm spectrum. There are too many copycats which havent got that passion for Dub and Reggae like he has. If you're gonna do Dub Techno, its best to have an idea of how Dub goes, I hear too many of the same chords but rarely get that feel that Dub brings, its spiritual not commercial. Just my view.
yes my dude
Well said! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Respect from Tottenham,London,Uk!!
yes according to the people who dont know shit about dub would say that every dub track sounds the same but as you said its the feel that distincts dub and 'commercial' dub.well said
100% agreed
Dub must be respected

Hearing that ‘Basic Channel! Release in 96! changed everything, coming from s reggae dub background I could tell Tubby was doing house & the foundation of techno back in the 70’s!
The opening has one of the best auto subtitle fails I've ever seen.
"welcome mr mullets philosopher"
Words from a real genius creator.
Genesis don't need to be perfect because they know they are already perfect.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but cutting tge music utterly undermines this once on a lifetime conversation with a legend. Real shame.
1:20:40 Amazing!
Good talk
Interviewer is garbage but it seems like MVO is being painfully obtuse at times... he is determined to give nothing specific about technique or hardware. Which I can appreciate, but then why do this kind of interview? This guy is an icon for so many, and I just imagine getting the chance to hear him go in-depth into his own music, and then him just rambling vague platitudes for an hour and a half and saying nothing...
This is exactly what I was thinking. Rather a shame.
Perfectly stated. Just seemed absolutely futile to agree to do the interview if this was gonna be his output
yeah unfortunately this is true
Although I sympathise with his view on modern dub techno producers (some of whom make great dub techno soundscapes) copying BC, I think he's a bit dismissive. He could say he's flattered by the fact that so many of us still love the style & listening to it. It's genre like any other, and didn't disappear just because BC stopped producing it.
i dont think it was a genre for them, maybe it was his personal style and others turned it into a genre.
Give the room some Red Bull !
My Prophet.
Culoe De Song in the early days... 26:20
The track at 1:10:21 is more precisely Maurizio - M04.5a
why does this look like a mobile phone video from 2001 even on 720p?
Because it's dub.
GOD HIMSELF IS IN THE HOUSE
is that Kornerl Kovacs at 50:16 ??!!
hahahahahhahha
It is inconceivable for me that, specially in this kind of style where the music speaks for itself, you have removed all the sections where the artist intends to make his point by showcasing his music. What a nonsense!
I know right ? Clowns.
100%
Copyright reasons. Frustrating
@@YUSSEB8E tracks are linked in the description. follow along!
@@linesteppa I’m aware of that and the tracks. I’m referencing the reason why they edit it out of the presentations. Do follow along
basic talk with fam
Who are these guys in the audience?!
clowns
A crying shame… but I do wonder if there were some more keen in the crowd that felt defeated and didn’t bother asking anything once they saw he was gonna keep giving advice like ‘take your time’ and ‘take it serious’ and more and more flat suggestions that are self evident to anyone who has put some time in making tracks
Seems the audio clips are removed to dodge the youtube algorithm.
It should be UA-cam Premium subscription enables the music parts, it's clunky to navigate to each song video then back here.
the track at 10:10:21 ist likely Maurizio M-4.5 which can be listend to at ua-cam.com/video/jYIj-9EMMYs/v-deo.html
Do any of the people trying to sound like me sound more like me than me?
Gorgonzola
Who will deal with me
no wonder he is gatekeeping a lot of stuff i think he knew that the room or interviewer questions were rather meh.
I don't know
..i really wanted to get some more info on the specific secret sauce gear and production techniques he used, but if you dig deep enough and you're into dub techno you can find out from other sources.
That interviewer...
We came overjoyed as we FINALLY found an interview with one of the boy wonders but we left with our thirst not the least bit quenched. One little non-trivial technique morsel would have been absolutely delightful or ANYTHING the least bit interesting on any topic. Holy crap that was depressing
Fun how he doesn't deliver any of his production secret
He and Marcus Ernestus worked a lot with analogue eletric devices.
This Interviewer is asking all the wrong questions!
Somebody should come up with a series of workshops where people can pay to have a session like this with the artists who truly inspire them...rather than a bunch of remotely interested people
People who attended this lecture are ones who were truly inspired by Moritz. I am pretty sure that a guy at around 50:00 is Kornel Kovacs and that it's Eltron John around 8:00, they are real deal artists and enthusiasts
Andrzej Zieliński lol that’s not Elton John
P L Eltron not elton
The interview quality and the cutting of the listening part is infuriating. RBMA, next time call a football host or something. smdh
What a shitty questions!! Why he ask him about echo chambers?? There are thousand things to ask him about .... we all know wikipedia
Big time
How do you sound like you and not the imitators? Because BC is the original shit. You always sound different when you are an originator.
They always choose the lamest interviewer for the best musicians, what the hell is this guy talking about?
God @redbull can you not even clear songs for your own interviews..rather weak to have to edit out parts that play examples
Or maybe have the video in a decent resolution even if it's from 2008?!
this is why Monster is better
This interview has less tempo and dynamic than a turtle race
Both of them are no native English Speakers (just like me as you see in my broken Speech) and they are seeking for Words. I think that's why it last more for every Answer...
