No need to cut the thread everytime, after joining a square (box) edges together. I used to make these in my 4H Club back in the 80s, very easy to do.

This style was very popular here in the US after WWII so that the rising number of "stay at home" moms could use their down time to decorate economically. My favorite aunt had a round pillow in velvet. They bought there house in the Los Angeles suburbs in the late 50s.
