That slap was actually real. The main actor Jihoon really did slap himself hard many times that his face was really swollen and red after. That even when they filmed the next scene it was still swollen. I believed they said it was all Jihoon's idea that the director was very impressed with Jihoon.

it's not explained in the drama, but in the webtoon its based on it's clarified that the reason why sieun studies so hard is because he's trying to find something that fills the hole in his heart. so you're not entirely wrong when u say he's "got no soul", in that he's not passionate about anything, or even cares about anything. he's trying to find something though, desperately. that's kind of what the show is about, or at least the journey sieun personally goes through. it is also revealed in the webtoon, but not here specifically with words... you can see it though, if u pay attention, so let's see if you can find what finally fills the void in his heart
