Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, 1991 & 1992

Here are two visits to the Crystal Palace Dinosaur Park, also known as Dinosaur Court, in May of 1991 and May of 1992. It is the world's oldest dinosaur park. Of course they're not all dinosaurs and those that are have the speculative appearance of their time of construction: 1852-54.
They were built by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the direction of Sir Richard Owen and were accurate as they could make them, given the fossil evidence thay had to work with at the time. For example, the quadruped with a horn on its nose is Iguanodon, which we now know was a biped with no horn and pronounced thumbs.
I shot these on a Sony 8mm video camera (1991) and a Sony Hi8 camera (1992) and transferred the videos to digital .avi format using a Digital 8 camera as a pass-through.
There has been extensive restoration of the sculptures since that time, which continues today.

I am fascinated by these objects. You can literally see them presented through time. Depicted in classical paintings, 1950’s Pathe news reels, and in photos from every decade since the 1850s, including your own video here from the 90s. There is something so nostalgic and evocative about that. They are a metaphoric time capsule and the story of their inaccuracies is compelling.
