Cleaning & preserving Castrol & Essolube oil cans - automobilia oily ragging

Today, junior (13) cleans up Castrol & Essolube oil cans before treating them to an oily rag restoration / make-over. Both motor oil cans date to the 1940s and are in original condition, the aim is to slow their deterioration and preserve them in his growing automobilia collection. Will they come up looking better? Will I run out of WD40 before he's completed the job?
We both enjoy collecting and preserving this old stuff, vintage tins & oil cans etc, and fortunately he'd much rather spend his pocket money on an old two-gallon petrol can (see the Pratts fuel can ) rather than on sweets or branded sports-wear.
