  • THIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! German soprano Lotte Lehmann in this? Please comment!
    Lotte Lehmann, Soprano (1888-1976)
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - Auf Flügeln des Gesanges
Song for voice and piano after a poem by Heinrich Heine
    From "Book of songs"
    Composed 1822-23
    (Recorded 1927)
My personal opinion: "She owned the secret, the only secret we have: A pure heart. A sound from within her heart that goes direct to a listeners heart. It makes him happy".
Words about Lotte Lehmann from an admirer. Words from Leo Slezak.
It´s significant, critics rather wrote about the effects of Lotte Lehmanns singing than about her artistry. There was something magic in it. It was this intensive soulful tone only a very few possessed.
The picture of her shows us a beautiful woman, an image according to her exceptional voice. But it would be deficient to reduce the soprano only to beautiful sounds.
Lotte Lehmann was a performer of characters, a tragedian. She´d sung Wagner and italian heroines with same intensity as she did with Mozart. Walter Legge said, she never sang like a virginal maiden, what means, her singing expressed superior wisdom. When she performed the first Suor Angelica in vienna, Puccini wrote: "She´s indeed a german, but a fine and subtile artist easy and without affectations of a primadonna, with a voice sweet as honey".
Lehmann first came to Metropolitan Opera at age 46 singing Sieglinde with Lauritz Melchior. In 1951 she interrupted a recital in New Yorks Town Hall, annunciated it was her last performance. The audience wept.
Tears are all what´s left. We´re not having voices like hers anymore...

Surely the greatest, most natural Lieder singer ever, as well as the finest, most characterful German lyric/dramatic soprano of her time
She gave hugely successful Master Classes in London in 1957-9 & these brought Janet Baker & Grace Bumbry to prominence. These instructive & entertaining classes were never empty ego trips, for she concentrated on her students, teaching enthusiastically & always encouraging & praising them.

    Vielen Dank! 5 Sterne dafür.

Too many years ago, a charming woman named Mia guided a friend and I through the Atlanta Art Museum. Learning we loved opera, she told us proudly that Lehmann was her godmother! We later read in LL's memoirs about the young fan "Mia" in Hamburg who always found a way to slip a bouquet of lilies onto her dressing table. They became friends for decades, & LL wrote warmly about driving through endless Georgia cotton fields to visit her & "her pale, lovely, black-haired child--little Mia-Lotte."

Lotte Lehmann's singing, like Caruso's, has the stamp of authenticity. One can hear it immediately. Incomparable voice and direct, heartfelt, honest delivery. Wonderful.

I am currently in love with her Korngold, "Ich ging zu ihm". Otherworldly. She has one of those voices that gets you in the heart.

Her Ich ging zu ihm may be the most beautiful recording of anything ever sung.

Lotte Lehmann is surely tied for top soprano of all time with the likes of Galli-Curci and Geraldine Farrar. Superb. It's a shame we don't have more recordings of her extraordinary voice. I think my favorite aria of hers is the gavotte from Manon It just overflows with passion.

I have a recording of a Met broadcast done in the late 30's with Lehmann and Rise Stevens of Der Rosenkavelier that is just amazing! She certainly belongs here!

Lotte Lehmann was part of the greatest singers, of course you are right ! your comment means that you love especialy her kind way of vocal expression. I totaly agree....but who can hear such an evident singer nowadays, then it is a good thing to explain the proper life of each singer, just a few from each ones comments.
When she came to usa, to the metropolitan opera of New York, and others countries, she sang belong another master, Lauritz Melchior, and both of them were at the summit of Wagner opera, Sieglinde und Siegmund...So..to be heard ! I can personnaly listen to wagner with them. She was a so kind woman, but also full of strenght, and what a beautiful woman !
I am reading today, a cutting from 1948,( Claudia Cassidy) talking about Kathleen Ferrier and Lotte Lehmann singing the same day ; she felt much respect for these women, one , ( born in 1888) and the youngest gifted as far as our ears could hear.......
She went, staid definitely in america in 1938, year of Anschluss, to prevent from Nazis; it was an important and courageous decision she took, along with lauritz Melchior and Bruno Walter....Yes ! this was a great and honourable family !

Now I'm pretty sure no one will read this but it's quite amazing for me to be able to say that I am related to lotte Lehmann and even though I'm not an opera singer I love her voice and wish that I had it.

The lessons which I had started with a kind of suspicious curiosity, turned out to be sheer delight for me. She studied Marguerite with me-and lieder. These were the ones which astounded me most. I am quite sure that Jeanette would have developed into a serious and successful lieder singer if time would have allowed it.

    Dear 100.
She's in a class of her own, and what a fine recording you
have perfect tone..she's marvelous and all the adjectives.
    Many thanks.

Despite the primitiveness of the recording technology here, her voice amazes. While I am certain she would have sounded better with today's equipment, her voice is wonderful. Never heard of her, glad to know her now. Becoming a Mendolssohn devotee.

When Jeanette MacDonald approached me for coaching lessons, wrote famous diva Lotte Lehmann, I was really curious how a glamorous movie star, certainly spoiled by the adoration of a limitless world, would be able to devote herself to another, a higher level of art. I had the surprise of my life. There couldnt have been a more diligent, a more serious, a more pliable person than Jeanette.

I had already chosen my personal favorite 10 singers from among the hundreds on UA-cam, but after listening to Miss Lehmann, they all pale by comparison. I´ll have to re-train my ear and my open my heart.

I'm really enjoying exploring these 100 singers; being largely ignorant, so many new discoveries. This feels me with a marvellous sense of wellbeing- oh, i see that fits with what is written in the notes above. Yes, i wanted to say happy, and yet a little bit more besides.

Unlike Nelson Eddy, who came from grand opera to film, MacDonald in the 1940s yearned to reinvent herself in grand opera. She began training for this goal with Lotte Lehmann, one of the leading opera divas of the day.

This is a 1917 photograph of her singing Micaela (Carmen) in vienna, she was age 28 at the time. You´ll find it with Google pictures. I used an image processor to edit the pic.
