Momotaro (father) was born on October 18, 2000
He came to the Kyoto City Zoo in 2010.
Genki (mother) was born on June 24, 1986.
I was born in Kyoto and came back to Kyoto.
Gentaro (eldest son), born on December 21, 2011

Momotaro looks so shy...love him. It's like he wants to play but doesn't know how to initiate play. Not having a father to mimic had some impact I am sure. However, I think that's just his personality as well. I am shy, an introvert, and can be socially awkward 😅 I can totally relate.
Momotaro really missed a father figure when he was young. But, in the beginning Genki wouldn't let Momotaro interact with Kintaro, and I think that that also didn't helped Momotaro.
There are old videos of baby Gentaro playing with dad, even jumping all over his head. I think they are playing with each other when we are not watching.

I'm with you this one made me laugh out loud. Momo had personal issues between his teeth, yawning and his foot! Kinny dancing a jig in front of dad and Dad looking at him like is that all you got? His expression didn't change he just kept yawning! Then as soon as dad got up, time to rampage the sacks. The little guy just makes me laugh with all his different mannerisms,hes just the funniest little toddler! Always good for the soul!

Momotaro is a very handsome silverback, and now Kintaro has grown so much this year it is easy to see he looks quite a lot like his papa. Beautiful family!
There are videos of Momotaro at this age. He and Kintaro could be twins. I think Gentaro looks more like Genki, especially his sweet, expressive eyes. The whole family is a treasure.

Great video - I just wish Kintaro/ actually the whole troop - were living in a large green enclosure. I hate that both Kintaro and Gentaro are having to spend their childhood in this terrible enclosure. And I pity both Momotaro and Genki having to spend the rest of their lives here. Hopefully the boys will move to enclosures- outside of Japan! 🦍❣🦍❣
I doubt if this will happen. Japan is very protective of their gorilla breeding program. I believe there are 50+ zoos in Japan as part of this program, with very detailed records on mating pairs and genetics.

Wonder what the true living conditions of these majestic animals are? Looks like a small confined concrete jungle with one tree, behind viewing shield - Wish the uploader would give more details about this habitat.

Are there plans to get them a larger enclosure? The other gorilla zoo families have space to run and more enriching inhabit . This family seems to be more confined.

We all need to send messages to the zoo to please make their enclosure bigger with more things to play on and more females
They had planned a larger enclosure but found ancient ruins, so they had to scale back per law.
Genki was bullied by other females in her previous troop, so she doesn't do well with other females.
KyotoCity, literally the whole city, is part of the UNESCO Historical Preservation Act. This includes the zoo. They can build up (after much red tape) but not out. At one time they got the ok to plant more tree, but Gentaro ripped them all out when he was younger.
I would like to know about Momotaro's disinterest in his children.
Momotaro is not disinterested in his children. He does his job as silverback, keeping an eye on all members of his family. He is reserved, laidback, patient, he knows he is The Boss. Genki limits his contact with both sons. Genki didn't allow Momotaro to touch Kintaro for months. Momotaro is patient, biding his time for opportunities to interact more with his sons, & it will pay off in the long run.
Momotaro is very interactive with his sons. He is reserved and quiet, but very attentive to Genki and the boys. They roughhouse more than we see in a lot of these videos. If you watch other videographers they all film from a different prospective, so you need to watch many of them to stitch together the whole picture. MOMO is an impressive silverback and king.

This was when Kintaro was trying to find his own rhythm. I think he is telling Momotaro that it isn't important what you look like when you dance, but it is important that you keep on dancing no matter what's going on in life. 😉❤️😍😘🥰🦍🦍🦍🦍

Momotaro se cuidado, limpa os dentes, cuida do pé e parece estar com sono, Kintaro procurando chamar a atenção, toca bateria, trepa pula e se exibe pra Momotaro que não parece interessado e vai embora, agora Kintaro desconta no cobertor. Esse pequeno gorila se diverte sozinho, Kintaro e Genki parece gostar do cheiro de Momotaro, cheiram onde ele sentam.

Their human interactions are with their keepers. Seems like they keep bars between humans and gorillas which I'm sure is good safety protocol. Don't know about you but a 400 lb gorilla with unlimited strength grabbing at you, even playfully, is a day that is not ending well for you.
