I've long been somewhat suspicious of the Game Show "Wheel Of Fortune". I've seen so many contestants literally get to within one letter-ONE LETTER-of being able to solve a puzzle, and then "Blow it", by guessing the wrong letter, in order to complete the puzzle, and win that particular round. I've also seen, in the past, what looks like favoritism. Seems like that, more often than not, regular people are somehow passed over, so that somebody else that's "More beautiful & possibly really well off" gets to win. I'm wondering:Is the same kind of thing happening, that happened in this movie? I don't even watch "Wheel Of Fortune" anymore. I'm done with it!

They say that the producers of “Twenty One”, Jack Barry & Dan Enright of Barry & Enright Productions made millions off the scandal, but they also had a period of time where they couldn’t get the networks to touch any of their game shows until “The Joker’s Wild” appeared in 1971 on CBS. Barry & Enright was ostracized from television for a long period of time after Twenty One was on NBC.
Actually, the sponsors WERE touched. Before the scandal broke, sponsors had more say over a television show than the networks since they were the ones putting up the money. The fallout took a lot of power away from the sponsors and put it back in the networks hands, and gave us "standards and practices". My only complaint about Quiz Show is it never mentions the show that actually started the entire scandal, Dotto. But don't get me wrong, Quiz Show is still a fantastic movie.
While important to the public hearings in that it bolstered Stempel's claims, the 1958 Dotto incident, which happened nearly 2 years after Stempel took his fall on Twenty-One, would have added nothing but confusion to an otherwise tight, solid movie. Including every detail surrounding a story is not how screenplays work.
Martin Rittenhome [Martin Scorsese in a great cameo] : Television is gonna go on. The quiz shows are gonna go on. Makes me wonder what you hope to accomplish with all this. I'm glad the actual show episodes were available on UA-cam because it revealed that Stempel didn't actually lose on "Marty" He had other questions after that one, unlike how it was portrayed in the film. It certainly added context. .
Just watched this. What a sick movie, sick cast, sick cinematography (split focus is one of my favourite techniques), sick story. Haven't watched a lot of S&E, but I'm glad they liked it too, a great review.
OK, for those of us a little more literal in our language, "sick" meaning "well done." I'm from a time when "sick" meant disgusting or reprehensible. I kinda miss it...when someone said something, it was easier to follow.

If Disney is willing to do it (they released the movie through their Hollywood Pictures label), it'll happen. This movie is a classic. Why not give it the Criterion treatment?
100% yes. One of my favorite films of all time, would love to see a special edition or a 4k cut, anything. Such a phenomenal film, and one of the smartest screenplays I think I've ever seen.
you know, i really don't care for Robert Redford. as an actor, i just don't get his appeal. for whatever reason, my mind insists on rejecting him onscreen. but in the early 1990s he directed two (2)! _really_ memorable movies for me: yes, _Quiz Show,_ but also _A River Runs Through It._ the scene where the (!spoilers! doomed) Brad Pitt character catches that big fish, both his brother and dad looking on in awe . . . i think you have to see the movie to understand what i'm talking about it. i'm sure it doesn't sound even a little bit interesting.
Redford was gorgeous in his youth, and he had this appeal that's hard to define. He made some great choices with the films he appeared in, and has some very fine performances to his credit. But I always thought Redford looked a little self-conscious and maybe a little awkward onscreen. I got the feeling that he was a little uncomfortable with being onscreen and being this movie star. Maybe I'm wrong. But he transitioned to behind the camera very well, so maybe I'm right about that. Redford certainly seems to have a way with actors and knows how to bring out the best in actors (e.g. the cast of "Ordinary People" especially young Timothy Hutton who went on to win an Oscar for that role). I know a lot of actors-turned-directors are good at this, obviously as they know what it's like being an actor, but Redford also brings a lot of subtlety, sensitivity and depth to his films.
Because of this scandal, the amount of money to be won in quiz shows was reduced considerably. When I was a kid, first round Jeopardy answers were only worth $10, $20, $30, $40, and $50. Of course they've rebounded since then.
And it was BECAUSE of the scandals, Jeopardy! was born. Merv Griffin wasn't sure of a quiz show post-scandal, but his wife Julann suggested one with a twist: give the players the answers, but have THEM come up with the questions.
I love the congressional hearing scene in which all of the congressmen just fall all over themselves to tell Van Doren that it is okay, we all make mistakes, etc. Then Rep. Steve Derounian (R-New York) basically cuts through all the chickens#@t by telling Van Doren that he can't understand how an adult of his intelligence has trouble simply telling the truth.
The real villain in all of this is the slug Dan Enright, the producer of the game show "21". He's the one who pressured the game show contestants into cheating, then actually Took the Prize Money Back that they won, pressuring them to sign a secret agreement to do that, forcing them to accept a pittance for selling their souls. When he was finally exposed (after threatening to ruin many lives to intimidate witnesses), he paid almost no penalty, laid low for a few years, and then was accepted back in Hollywood again, producing more game shows including The Joker's Wild. The contestants they pressured into cheating became pariahs, and the producers who committed fraud on a national scale paid no penalty at all, when they should have been fired, had their assets seized, and been banned from the industry (oh, and served serious jail time for extortion and blackmail). But then, that's justice in America.....
the only thing i didn't like about quiz show was how they didn't portray the episode correctly. specifically the part when Van Doren answered the question he knew the answer to correctly
I couldn't help it, but during that entire movie, I was horribly distracted by Rob Morrow's terribly, overblown fake New England accent. I can't help but wonder -- did he have to lay that phony accent on so thick? I know his character was a Harvard grad, but sheesh, that was awful ...
Murph I love this movie, an underrated gem-and it’s on Netflix-but I agree, Rob Morrow’s New England accent irritated me, he was trying too hard, he shouldn’t have used it, better to use no accent than a lousy one (IMO), though his performance was good. As far as I know, Van Doren and Stemple are still around.
I wonder what they thought about present day movies, like, Mary and the witch's flower, rouge one a star wars story, solo a star wars story, star wars the force awakens, cars 3, Ralph breaks the intranet, incredibles 2, Mary Poppins Returns, etc. Etc.
Quizz SHow a totally underrated movie. I had expected to find the title at least on the Oskar aspiration list but weard enough it fall in the Orcus of the trashed classics. Guess why, world wide thousands of quizz shows are filling the early evening programs if some " nitpicker movie " like this would become famous not only the TV program makers would loose money, the insurance companies backing the price money on every show also. So it is all because of the cash,, After all this scandal aobout the Professor with his renomée faking the answers had been an authentic major scandal in it´s days. Our two gentlemen in their intrioduction were absolutly right.
They literally said in every other seen they wanted someone more good looking. Truth is, if Herb kept his mouth shut it probably would of gone on a bit longer.
True, but in those days, anti-Semitism was more common and he definitely looked Jewish. Remember Al's line to Charlie: "If you were a kid, would you want to be an annoying Jewish guy with a sidewall haircut?" On the other hand, they went out of their way to make Stempel look bad. The haircut and the dead father-in-law's ill-fitting suit were Enright's idea.
Well they had a pattern of a Jewish guy, then a WASP who makes more money, then a Jewish guy again etc. It was just time for a WASP. But what really got me was that when they appeared at the hearing, Stempel the Jewish guy tells the truth and gets discredited and told he has psychiatric problems. Ralph Fiennes the WASP tells the truth and gets commended and an ovation.
Movies and TV shows are fiction everyone knows that. But Van Doren was just an actor that wasn’t acting but was burned because he was acting because he was given the answers. Lol
That was my second cousin, Charlie Van Doren. They didn’t mention that all of the contestants were given the answers. They didn’t even note that Charlie was married to a Jewish woman and had two kids.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO VAN DORAN. AMERICAN GREED CAN LETIGIMIZE ANYTHING. CHARLES SAYS " I'D REALLY RATHER TRY TO BEAT THEM HONESTLY." PAYMER'S CHARACTER FIRES OUT "WHAT'S DISHONEST? OH, I DON'T KNOW GIVING ONE CONTESTANT THE ANSWERS BEFORE THE SHOW COULD BE CONSTRUED AS DISHONEST.❤😊
It's strange. There was a period in the 1990s when non-Jews were playing Jewish characters in leading roles. Robert DeNiro in Casino. Warren Beatty in "Bugsy", along with Ben Kingsley - fricken' Gandhi - playing Meyer Lansky. They were the two most famous Jewish mobsters of all time. And of course Kingsley plays the most important Jewish character in "Schindler's List". I mean, what was up with that? Meanwhile, in Seinfeld, the Jewish actors (except for Jerry) were playing gentile characters. "Shiksa appeal" - Julia Louise DREYFUS? Which reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss playing the titular character in "Mr. Holland's Opus". I mean, it doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. Actors should get to play whatever roles they want. Hopefully Jewish actors weren't being denied Jewish character roles because of it. But I noticed this phenomenon back then and it seemed really strange. I can't attest to whether this is still a thing, because I don't care so much about movies anymore. Is it the movies, or is it me?
@@toonman6382 Lol. And, 'you don't mess with the Jesus.' Turturro played a Mexican in that one. And, of course he nailed it. Like 'the Dude, he abides. 😎
@@aquamarine99911 It's the movies. I would add that a good actor, which these are, transcend the whole non Jew playing a gentle, and vica versa, thing. Oh, and that reminds me, how great Dreyfuss was in Mr. Holland's Opus.
A bloated, sorta-interesting-for-about-fifteen-minutes movie about how ashamed we should be to live in a capitalistic society directed by multi-millionaire Robert Redford. And when of course no one wanted to see it - Redford shamed us all for not buying tickets to see something boring, pretentious, and what amounts to a lecture from a zillionaire about how ashamed the rest of us should be not to pay $15 a pop to see his movie about how awful capitalism is.
What does Redford having money have to do with anything? A person with money is not supposed to opine about a system like capitalism or any other when people exploit it for their own greed? Are we supposed to just be shown shinny happy stories about how well it works and not bring up when people abuse it? Your comment reads like what a dictatorship follower would preach! You are a bit confused dear stranger. This is a story. Based on real events. You don't have to feel ashamed. Nobody other than you can make you feel ashamed. Stories are for learning from them. Seeing different perspective. Thinking about other things other than your past concept of them. The good and the bad. If you want to live in an insular society where nobody can talk about the bad things in it, you are in the wrong country. People that love America are supposed to criticize the bad aspects of it to create change so it can be a better place, for all of us. Do you understand the concept of America? Guess you don't. And by the way, this was done in 1994. Tickets were not $15 then. They were barely $5. See how prices have tripled in just a generation. Have wages tripled? Nope. See another problem with capitalism?! Ahh, better shut up and keep in line. Right? Right.

Agreed...the original release was terrible and it's never had a special edition.
If Disney is willing to do it (they released the movie through their Hollywood Pictures label), it'll happen. This movie is a classic. Why not give it the Criterion treatment?
Agreed
100% yes. One of my favorite films of all time, would love to see a special edition or a 4k cut, anything. Such a phenomenal film, and one of the smartest screenplays I think I've ever seen.
Agreed. It's hard to believe that to this day they haven't even graced it with a bluray release...
Yep Quiz Show is a great film.
i liked quiz show too. rob marrow was the key to its success. s and e dont give him his due
that was a deep analysis
you know, i really don't care for Robert Redford.
as an actor, i just don't get his appeal. for whatever reason, my mind insists on rejecting him onscreen.
but in the early 1990s he directed two (2)! _really_ memorable movies for me: yes, _Quiz Show,_ but also _A River Runs Through It._
the scene where the (!spoilers! doomed) Brad Pitt character catches that big fish, both his brother and dad looking on in awe . . . i think you have to see the movie to understand what i'm talking about it. i'm sure it doesn't sound even a little bit interesting.
Not a huge fan of Redford but I liked him fine as the Sundance Kid.
When my second cousin , Charles died a few years ago in his 90’s and still had the stain of the scandal as the first headline.
My Fave......Saw it as a kid
Because of this scandal, the amount of money to be won in quiz shows was reduced considerably. When I was a kid, first round Jeopardy answers were only worth $10, $20, $30, $40, and $50. Of course they've rebounded since then.
And it was BECAUSE of the scandals, Jeopardy! was born. Merv Griffin wasn't sure of a quiz show post-scandal, but his wife Julann suggested one with a twist: give the players the answers, but have THEM come up with the questions.
Good movie
nice edit at the end :)
It's a good movie.
Film was good, but Rob Morrow's accent was not.
I agree. His accent got on my nerves.
He was the weakest link.
Rob Morrow's entire performance was not good.
Absolutely! It affected our family very detrimentally. Charles was my second cousin.
the only thing i didn't like about quiz show was how they didn't portray the episode correctly. specifically the part when Van Doren answered the question he knew the answer to correctly
Yeah he sounded ridiculous, a bunch of Bostonians sound like that. I didn't mind at all.
Nailed it.
Rob Morrow is terrible in this
@@williamfreemon3878 the movie had wonderful reviews, but I wonder what the reviews of his performance?
I wonder what they thought about present day movies, like, Mary and the witch's flower, rouge one a star wars story, solo a star wars story, star wars the force awakens, cars 3, Ralph breaks the intranet, incredibles 2, Mary Poppins Returns, etc. Etc.
Lol, "Rouge One" sounds like the name of the obligatory porno spoof.
They’d hate it.
Is your native language "mushrooms?"
They didn’t drop Stempel because he was a Jew, but because he was a shmuck and they wanted someone from high society.
They literally said in every other seen they wanted someone more good looking. Truth is, if Herb kept his mouth shut it probably would of gone on a bit longer.
True, but in those days, anti-Semitism was more common and he definitely looked Jewish. Remember Al's line to Charlie: "If you were a kid, would you want to be an annoying Jewish guy with a sidewall haircut?"
On the other hand, they went out of their way to make Stempel look bad.
The only thing I didn't like in this movie was Morrow's cheesy accent.
C'mon, give the guy a break-He was doing his best Boston drawl. Still a great film!
And the rest of his hopeless performance.
RALPH Fiennes, not Ray Fiennes, Siskel.
Or is he saying “Rafe” - the old English pronunciation?
Movies and TV shows are fiction everyone knows that. But Van Doren was just an actor that wasn’t acting but was burned because he was acting because he was given the answers. Lol
He was a professor at Columbia, not an actor!
@@johnniejones535 He was putting on an act because he was given the answers. I know he was a professor.
Never saw that film.
Mark Uyeda you should see it,it’s really good
It's a very good movie.
Not many people have seen it because it's pretty talky. It's really a very good movie and worth checking out.
It's a great film I just saw it for the first time last week
Thank you for that.
I found the jew-gentile subtext of this movie extremely tedious.
That was my second cousin, Charlie Van Doren. They didn’t mention that all of the contestants were given the answers. They didn’t even note that Charlie was married to a Jewish woman and had two kids.
What do Charles Van Doren,Barack Obama, and Meadow Soprano have in common?
None of them show up for Columbia class reunions.
Whut?
@@lipby I'll connect the dots for you:Van Doren was too embarrassed,Obama and Soprano never went there.
WHY ARE WE YELLING
1:50 "Ray Feinnes". It's Ralph Gene.
He said it correctly. It's pronounced, "RAFE".
It's was a good drama but not anything amazing.
Good movie, but preachy
How is it preachy? What is it trying to convice you of? That pharmaceutical funded sham corporate game shows aren't on the level?
Why does John Turturro keep playing jewish characters?
Because he's believable? After all, he is the Jesus.
He looks Jewish. Italians and jews look alike
I love this movie, but the normie fox news mention made me cringe.
Get better material.
Sorry it didn't have enough explosions and dead bodies for you Timmy.
In a greater sense, Tim Mitchell, you are correct. But I still thought it was a good film.
You must be fun at parties
Right? Right.
