Being an artist today, requires loving the craft more than ever before. I’m a photographer /videographer not living in LA or New York. If I had a nickel for every time somebody said you should do a free video for me, It’ll be marketing for you and eventually somebody might pay you for this lol

Most people still regard creatives as hobbyists until they become famous enough to demand what they're worth (and even then most still struggle to receive even half of that). Make good, unique work. Be consistent at it. Work on your social media presence. Don't be afraid to reach out to others you admire, no matter how much you think they won't pay you any attention, one eventually will. The best of luck on your creative journey. If it's truly in you, you can't give it up anyway.

From the indie artist perspective, atp you shouldn't even waste your time going after streams and trying to get signed. Instead, you need to create a niche with your music and build a fanbase around that while branding yourself. It's much better to have a community of engaged fans rather than spreading yourself thin and trying to compete with major label acts. This route takes much more patience, but is much more fruitful. In the long run you can even hope to have a reach like Tech N9ne's Strange Music where we saw his fan base going so ape shit over him that people from the outside gained curiosity and wanted to join the party. All that being said, there's nothing wrong with the major label route, but just know you have to play THAT game and conform to what the industry is currently doing. You'll get crazy exposure, but in the end you'll be fighting to recoup your advance and constantly swimming to maintain relevance to avoid being shelved. Don't quit your day job lol.

    1. Artists lie about being rich AND also about bad contracts etc
    2. The "free music revolution" exponentially increased the size music industry and broadened the spectrum of the type artists able to make it.
    3. Buying a digital download is equivalent to purchasing an Instagram pic you liked
    4. TikTok is widely popular, however a MAJORITY of ppl in the world do not youse it or care to use it
    5. Artists need to stop signing to labels.
Big Artists need to get out of their deals and go independent. Labels, generally speaking, do absolutely nothing other then to pair your name next to others.
    6. Yaaaa no shit ppl released music for free on SoundCloud. That's the whole fucking premise of SoundCloud. Soundclouderrs selling debut albums is funny AF for some reason

      @@freebantu6019 great question! i’m mostly nigeria>jamaica/slavery>usa.
i may have heard, “you eat like you’re from india” coming from a person that’s surprised a foreigner enjoys authentic indian food so much.
but no, i haven’t heard of “honorary white people” or anything like that.
but while attending a historically black college, there was a young woman from czech republic. i heard from a couple people that got to know her that felt like “she is a ‘sista’!” which meant this white woman treats me and my culture with an higher amount of respect than i’m used to receiving from well-meaning non-black people.
i also had another friend at the school whi was white. people called him White Dave back in the day, but he was well-respected for choosing to have their college experience in a very black environment.

Not to mention the 300-500 dollar half azz shoes the put out: I’m STR8 on “buying into the lifestyle” why should they get paid more than doctors, engineers, and teachers? Not saying I don’t respect the art, but entertainers and politicians make ridiculous money and help no one. Making 1-5 million in a 3 year span is pretty good if you’re smart with your money.
