  • Mance Lipscomb tells the story and sings the song, "Freddy," explaining that he made up his guitar arrangement to a song that he heard sung one evening in 1917, by a guy named "Big George." He tells how Freddy sung his way out of Marlin jail by singing this song, and Big George brought the song to Navasota.

hey, thanks for uploading...on the arhoolie recordings, it's hard to get the sense of the off rhyme in this verse. Freddie/ he lay down/ tryin' not to pay no mind/ then awhile 'for day Freddie a-woke/ heard some springs...(cryin')

in fact, I don't think I've ever seen a blues forum ever get that lyric right! not even the weenies want to approach it. A very valuable interview. Also check out my lyrics to "Jack of Diamonds"
