- Calculating calories is an important part of feeding your pet the right amount. Feeding guidelines on the back of the bag are usually inaccurate, so calculating your pet’s caloric requirements based on signalment, lifestyle, and body condition score will help you ensure accuracy!

Thanks so much for this video. I am trying to go with making my own food and am figuring out how much my dogs eat in dry kibble to the whole foods. This calculation is very helpful and I am going to begin applying it. Our German Shepherd who was underweight when we rescued her is now gaining weight and looking healthy. And our Golden Retriever is at her ideal weight from being a little heavy last year at the vet. I am using your calculations to ensure that I am feeding them properly. So appreciated. Can't thank you enough
So interesting to see how much an animal actually needs versus how much they get fed. YIKES!
This may help me in my homework. Appreciate this video alot!
Glad you enjoyed! :)
Hi, thank you so much. Such a great video and helped me so much. Do you have any info for calculating the daily requirements for puppies and kittens? thanks
I plan to create a video for feeding growing pets in the future. Overall, I recommend not restricting calories of puppies and kittens, and allowing them to eat as much as they want while they are growing.
Great work!! Us the video out though??❤
Hi good day, I’m also a fellow student. Just want to ask what is the source/reference of those formula
Hi Elgy, thanks for asking! I got these specific formulas from my Nutrition course in veterinary school. There are so many similar formulas; they just require a bit more tweaking (which is why I chose the formula I did). These similar formulas can be found in textbooks such as Small Animal Clinical Nutrition or Nutrition and Disease Management for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses. (I have links to these texts in the description section of my video. :)
Hello, very useful info! Thank you! I wanted to ask about kittens? Is there any difference in multipliers?
Hi Ismail, glad you enjoyed! We hope to have a video detailing puppy and kitten nutrition soon! The multipliers are very different for these growing pets. Here is an excellent table that should help you out in the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition textbook on page 434: s3.amazonaws.com/mmi_sacn5/2019/SACN5_24.pdf Please let us know if you have any other questions! :)
@@FeedingRavenDoodles thank you so much. Very helpful indeed! Looking forward to see that video!
where did the 112g per cup come from??? 14:00-15:00
It's written on the bag! :)
how did you find grams per cup? by weighing out one cup of food on a food scale?
Kcal per cup should be listed on the bag 🙂
may i use this calorie calculator for my 2 months old kitten?
This formula is only for adult animals. Kittens should not be calorie restricted; they should be allowed to eat however much they want.
I can't understand the RER, my dog weight es 32.8Kl, is nautered and eats 1174Kcal per day including snacks, If I feed him with what RER says It would be 919x1.6x1.2x0.8=1411Kcal and he'll gaing a lot of weight
The formula is just a baseline, not all pets will follow it! Maintaining your pet's body condition is the most important thing, so keep doing what works for you 🙂
2.2lbs = 1kg
I have watched this video so many times and never noticed that! This one needs to be re-recorded for sure, there are several things I have to change. Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)
Something is way off here. My dog eats 256kcal and is maintaining weight. Based on you calculation it should consume 354kcals to loose weight... someone is gonna have obese dog really fast if they follow this calculation.

ok so a 8 pound cat.. lets say 2 to 3 smaller servings a day? and thats dry food
It depends on what works best for your lifestyle! Many cats do well with 1 or 2 meals per day, but if your cat tends to gorge their food they may do better with 3 meals.
