Remembering that through a series of uncontrollable events on my part, that generations ago my relatives ended up here and I was born here. I suspect many other Australians, and new Australians feel the same way about just being grateful for getting to call Australia home and want to celebrate this…
A welcome dose of reality & common sense,Dr Ridd. I think most of us subscribe to your 10 examples & hopefully will gladly admit to them & not just on Australia Day.

Generations of trauma. My people were indentured servants, often treated worse than slaves. And to me, that's sorta interesting, and at least we aren't a Spanish or French colony. Something we can all be proud of.
Great! But you missed one thing re: Harold Holt the disappearing Prime Minister; Australians’ sense of humour. What other nation would then name a swimming pool after him? [Harold Holt Pool in Melbourne]
Conversely when I lived in NZ for a couple of years i saw a postcard of a map of the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and what it called the "West island" 😂😂😂😂
If you were a group of people wishing to colonise a land 8 months away by small wooden ships, what you would likely do is "persuade" people to travel there by having them arrested for trivial crimes and "sentencing" them to deportation to Australia. It would of course be necessary to deport farmers, brick layers, carpenters, black smiths, cooks etc. which is in fact what happened. Then when Australia got on its feet, it attracted entrepreneural immigrants unhappy with their home countries motivayted to achieve a better life. THAT is what made Australia. Same reason as the USA.

Actually it wasn’t always it’s been on several different days over the last 120 years. Basically only since the end of WW2 has it been Jan 26th, and 26/01/1948 was the day Aborigines were recognized as Australian citizens, another good reason to keep the date.
Why don't we have full dress landing day reenactments anymore?, with raising of the British flag, reading out declarations of terra nuilus and claiming Australia for the Crown. All Australians could enjoy that wonderful part of our history again. The beginning of Australia as a Nation.

The Australian Aborigine had x ray paintings before x rays were invented. Their paintings have fared remarkably well... like the reef. Yay Australia and a southerly wind after a hot day.
As if the aboriginals are the only ones to have suffered inter generational trauma - I come from a country that was invaded and devastated with tragic regularity over a vast period of time but on every tragic occasion the people have been able to bounce back and not dwell on their miseries and go forward with optimism.
It's such a nihilistic & condescending view of indigenous people to claim that they will be forever held back by 'inter-generational trauma.' It's as if they are generically unable to address the disadvantages, which is a racialist view. And, you don't elevate one group of people by pulling another group down.

The U.S. was used as a penal colony also, but when independence was achieved, Britain had to look further afield!
And you couldn’t get much further afield than here and to top it off we even reversed the seasons.
