You’re right, it wasn’t a blatant copy of Marylyn, it was most definitely an homage and she kept true to herself. As others said in the comments this was from a movie in 1990 called Dick Tracy, in which Madonna played a club singer who sang lounge type 1930’s songs. This song - Sooner or later was up for an oscar for best song and it won. Madonna’s date that night was none other than Micheal Jackson. She has said she was nervous as hell ( u can see her hand trembling) because the Hollywood elite never accepted her , but she really shut them up that night because this performance was camp and beautiful. It could had gone so wrong, but she knocked it out of the park. People spoke about it for days after it aired. Thank u for always being respectful to our legends. Much love ❤️
Wow! Its always interesting when performers talk about there nerves after a great performance because I couldn't tell😂 she seemed confident AF, but i guess its refreshing that even the icons hands tremble. Thanx for context 🥰
If you look closely u can see her hand trembling. Hollywood thought of her as a joke then ( and now) but she the performer that she is showed them- it took guts . At the end ( if u look closely) she tossed a 5 million dollar earring into the orchestra pit because it got caught in her hair. Security was scrambling to find it, after the performance. Not she if they did, but she didn’t give a F , cause she slayed and she knew it. I saw the performance live. I was 12
It's actually one of her most iconic performances. No back-up dancers, flashing lights or distracting optics, just pure vocals, talent, and a whole lot of charisma!!! I'm sure her date M.J. was in the audience , awed and gobsmacked! He had met his match!!
Madonna absolutely ruled the live televised shows in the 12 months stretching from sept to sept 89/90. She absolutely crushed the mva '89 with express yourself, completely tearing at the stage with choreography and vocal. As you saw here inn march '90 proving her vocal chops at the Oscars, and finishing the 12 month ride off with her iconic sept '90 mva performance of Vogue.. Enjoy Empress
No matter what they say! She’s one of the best entertainers of all time. The billboards can’t deny it. If her records sold more than any female singer alive, whom we admire as a great vocalist and sold not even half of Madonna’s, has the right to say Madonna’s voice isn’t good enough and that she can’t sing? Why not say, Madonna’s voice is unique, clear, and rare, rather than slamming her because she can’t, What? She’s relevant and she’s a good storyteller ( in singing) and her ability and capacity to entertain is enormous. Like it or not, she’s already MADE.

Great reaction. A lot of people miss on small thing that was a big deal at the time: At the end when she's riffing, she says "Talk to me General Schwatzkopf, tell me all about it!" she's referring to the general who led the US first war with Iraq. At the time of this, it had just happened and the media were all gung-ho on him and anything military. A lot of folks might think she was following suit but really she's mocking that idea of male authority (a consistent theme of hers). So, consider that she's taking the Marilyn look and persona and switching it up. Instead of being your play thing, men of America, this version of M is most definitely in charge. I mean, damn, that's what the song is about: a woman in charge who will get she wants. So many in the media at the time had it out for Madonna for refusing to be their object, their toy. SHE owned them, over and over. And they couldn't wait to take her down. And with the next US war with Iraq, she went hard taking on that male military authority with American Life, the video. And from that moment forward, US radio would not play her. Clear Channel almost had a monopoly on US pop radio and they were very corporate, very conservative (this is all before streaming) and they shut her out. She got Dixie Chicked. It has hurt her career but has not caused her to flinch from taking shit on and going hard (see God Control or What It Feels Like for a Girl videos). You rock, Empress. I bow low to thee.
This for me is THE BEST performance fron the Oscars of all of them, better vocalists or not!!!! This was a time when "they" did think that she woulnd sing live ....and she said ... I 'll do it!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
She’s not the best singer in the world, but she’s an amazing performer and was the biggest thing in the world when I was growing up, and also really stood for stuff
Your suspicions are accurate. It comes from an album that was a tribute to classic Hollywood. It's a great album, check it out sometime. It's called "I'm Breathless".
This is my favorite vocal performance from Madonna. That isn't an easy song to sing either. This was the night that she cemented her status as a superstar. I also really like how she sounds singing "Don't Tell Me" on David Letterman.
I remember seeing this on TV when it aired it was such a big deal that her and Michael Jackson went together to the show and then this performance topped it all. They were the biggest pop stars and still are. I haven't seen any male or female pop star reach the same level of fame and success that they had in the 80s and 90s. Its sad to know so many of these performances and songs will just be forgotten about and these younger people have no idea. Legends.
She starred as Breathless Mahoney in the film Dick Tracy. She was invoking that character and the song is from her album I’m Breathless. She killed this live performance with awesome vocals and of course that look. Great reaction 👏👏Her date that night was Michael Jackson!
While I’m certain others have said this, please allow me to add my voice to this chorus: Madonna’s performance here at the 1991 Oscars telecast was (and still is) one of her best performances. This song was written for the film Dick Tracy (1990) by Stephen Sondheim; who also wrote music for classics like West Side Story (1961), and also one of my favorite musicals Gypsy (1962).
Hi Empress, yes, Madonna did a whole album called I’m Breathless inspired by her role on Dick Tracy movie. And majority of the songs have this jazzy/mobster atmosphere. This is the album where you will find Vogue, which is a homage to the classic Hollywood era. :)
i would've never guessed Vogue was a "specialty" song and apart of something bigger. i legit thought madonna had a retro moment, but this is was a whole movement🔥
@@EmpressReacts actually Vogue is a song based in the ballrooms where LGBTQA people would perform following categories like we see today in RuPaul’s Drag Race and pose emulating Vogue magazine models and covers. They would also emulate Hollywood royalty. So Madonna mixed all up in a melting pot and that hit came!
She states in an interview that she had a lot of technical difficulties during this performance but she still pulled it off without anyone knowing. True performer!
Marlene-Dietriesque performance, Marlene was/is her greatest inspiration. Dietrich didn't like Madonna at first until she saw her live in concert on TV. She changed her mind.
A little late to the game but better late than never. The album that Madonna released this song on was inspired by and recorded for the motion picture of Dick Tracy (1990). However, it isn't the official soundtrack. She added Vogue as the last track to ensure its success. She was right. It sold and did very well. In the movie, she plays Breathless Mahoney, Femme Fatale. It is based on a 1930's comic book come to life by Warren Beatty who also dated her during and after the filming of the movie. Also, she hadn't yet gone to voice training classes. That happens with Evita in 1996. She did get directions from a musical expert of this era of music; however, I can't remember his name, on how to sing this music but it is all her. Warren Beatty got her the musician to help her out. She did a fantastic job! The song was nominated, and I believe won as well. She sounds just like her recorded voice. As we all know, you cannot lip-synch or use any kind of voice improvement devices in the Academy Awards. Madonna is spellbinding! She commands the stage which we all know she will continue to do throughout her career. That is why Madonna holds the Guinness World Record for the Top Grossing Solo Touring Artist (Male or Female) $1.4 Billion to date. She's #3 following The Beatles then The Who followed by Bruce Springfield and Elton John by quite a margin.
@@EmpressReacts - Thank you. I saw the playlist earlier today UA-cam recommended it but I definitely will watch it. Like my algorithm needs any more Madonna. There are days that I let UA-cam's autoplay go on it's own and it's mostly Madonna it plays. I'm like "Enough Madonna, please!" However, it's my own doing. I'm the one that taught the algorithm to do it so I have to laugh 😂! OMG! Right now, while typing this comment, I played a video that has nothing to do with Madonna and 2 autoplay videos later it's back to Madonna! No matter what type of music I play eventually UA-cam will make a playlist for me and Madonna is in every single one of them. Even if she shouldn't be in it. I picture the algorithm thinking let's just through some Madonna in here too. 😆
When this originally aired I was surprised how much I liked this performance. Madonna wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but she pulled this off. Great reaction Empress
So many things about this performance-her Harry Winston ear ring falls off and lands in her hair that she will throw off stage at the end to her hand shaking before it starts because she was so nervous-her brother says in his book she’s wanted to be accepted by hollywood so much at this point that she was def nervous and not her usually confident self. She did great and proved herself better than hollywood. In my eyes she had just broken up with dick Tracy. Or rather he broke up w her and she took Michael Jackson as her date to this event to tell warren Beatty LOOK AT ME NOW!!
😂🥰 i ❤ the human aspect of this event. Everything is so cool and omg i didn't even notice an earring stuck in her hair because the performance was so 🔥🔥🔥
Empress I'm loving your Madonna reactions. I've been a fan for years and it's refreshing to see someone as young as you connect with and get what she's saying. I highly recommend you check out a track of hers titled 'Rescue me'. To me it's a total bop and I think you'll feel the same.
Basically, Madonna's version of Marilyn has always been about refashioning the sex goddess of yore from an object of men's desire to a full-fledged subject who owns her own sexuality and expresses her own desire. In other words, Madonna flipped the idea of the sex goddess on its head, from a passive figure to an empowered woman. The Blonde Ambition Tour (1990) contains a segment from the soundtrack (i.e. the album I'm Breathless) of the film Dick Tracy, which she starred in along with Warren Beatty. The opening number for this tour, Express Yourself, is a must-see. But the video for that song is also great.
Legendary Broadway and Musical composer, Stephen Sondheim wrote this Oscar Award winning track for the 1990 movie 'Dick Tracy' starting Madonna and Warren Beatty etc.
There are stories surrounding this performance of the year’s winning best original song for a motion picture written by legendary American theatre composer Stephen Sondheim. Lady M was not on her best behaviour that day being annoyed about technical issues with her entrance, someone passing out backstage and being nervous about the serious music and industry crowd watching. Girl came through though and capped the performance off by tossing a borrowed matching cluster million dollar Harry Winston earring that dislodged into her hair into the orchestra pit. Later that night girlfriend and her date for the night, one unsure Michael Jackson after-partied at super agent Irving ‘Swifty’ Lazar’s A-List only party at the iconic restaurant Spagos. The last days of glamour before Vanity Fair and Elton John turned oscars parties into a B-list circus.
😂 i ❤ the shade and coxtext here. The prestigiousness of the song was apparent that's why i was like why is she singing this 😂 makes sense now! And knowing THIS is the night her and MJ were dates make me like this performance even more 👑💯
I can't believe you are reacting to some of my favorite performers. You are awesome. I have some more recommendations for you. Diana King "Shy Guy", Kylie Minogue "On a Night Like This" Stevie Nicks "Stand Back", Pat Benatar "Promises In The Dark". Also check out the Madonna "Vogue" 1990 MTV performance, I think you will be shocked. One of my all time favorite Madonna songs is "Power of Goodbye" the video is amazing. You also did Linda Ronstadt, she was an awesome vocalist, unfortunately Linda now has Parkinson's disease and cannot sing. You should check out her song "You're No Good". Peace Empress!!!

Madonna definitely made a big splash with her music and being outspoken during the 80's & the early 90's for sure. Would appreciate if you would do a reaction to a 1979 song by Kenny Loggins featuring Micheal McDonald called ( THIS IS IT ) it won't disappoint, thanks beautiful love what you do.
Madonna is literally the best selling female recording artist of all time, highest grossing female touring artist of all time and has been doing it for 40 years, so I think she has more than proven herself as an established singer… 🤦♂️
no offense--but why are you spending so much time on madonna. She more of an enertainer and doesnt really have much of a voice (no disrespect). How about more video's of Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Barbra Streisand.

Thank you! Will do!😍 i'm currently on her 1st album🔥
And she also blows the kiss at the end to Michael Jackson
😂🥰😂 wow if i knew that when i film the reaction i would've turned up even more at the end 💀
😘❤And u rock for this amazing reaction
This for me is THE BEST performance fron the Oscars of all of them, better vocalists or not!!!!
This was a time when "they" did think that she woulnd sing live ....and she said ... I 'll do it!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
She’s not the best singer in the world, but she’s an amazing performer and was the biggest thing in the world when I was growing up, and also really stood for stuff
That's what I'm liking about her! I recently reacted to Human Nature and gained a whole new respect for her 🔥🔥🔥
NO ONE like Madonna, and you’re awesome my girl!!!!!!
Thank u so much!!
Zane’s 👍💙
glad you enjoyed 😍 i'm learning madonna is/was 🔥💯
Great Reaction!! Madonna is my favourite artist. New subscriber here. ❤
Thanks for subbing😍 with each reaction i'm learning how 🔥💯💯 she is/was
Wow this was awesome she won the Oscar for this song
Your suspicions are accurate. It comes from an album that was a tribute to classic Hollywood. It's a great album, check it out sometime. It's called "I'm Breathless".
Oh wow! That sounds dope. Never did I thought I would be bopping to some old tune, but here I am 😂🔥🥰
Great reaction. 💚
Check out her Girlie Show performance of “Why’s it so hard”. It’s one of her best live performances ever...
Thanx 🥰 will add it to the list
Legends.
As a MJ fan since birth, I support this message 💯😍😎🤣. Madonna ate that night ‼️
She starred as Breathless Mahoney in the film Dick Tracy. She was invoking that character and the song is from her album I’m Breathless. She killed this live performance with awesome vocals and of course that look. Great reaction 👏👏Her date that night was Michael Jackson!
Knowing that she was there with MJ (❤ MICHAEL) makes this performance even better 🥰 And thanx for explaining the whole look of it! 🔥
love love this performance
I love this!!!!!!!!😃
she is 🔥😍😍
You should also check out her other Oscars performance "You Must Love Me". That too (like this one) went on to actually win the Oscar that night.
noted😊added to the list.
@@JamesCimino 🤯 wow the story of Vogue is A-MAZ-ING‼️‼️ Like she could have retired and never made another song and that would be iconic
@@EmpressReacts yeah! What the show Pose! It’s about the ballroom scene and the second season starts with the release of Vogue.
@@JamesCimino so cool🥰 i ❤ this song/ video even more
She states in an interview that she had a lot of technical difficulties during this performance but she still pulled it off without anyone knowing. True performer!
wow! that's incredible!
From her movie Dick Tracy soundtrack. Also where Vogue came from
Oh, gotcha, so this was a soundtrack song 🎵. thanx for the info 🥰
This was a song she sang as a character in the cop/gangster movie Dick Tracy
I actually ended up doing a whole album review for the I'm Breathless album: ua-cam.com/video/9545v_khbO8/v-deo.html
Keep doing Madonna you will get tons of views!! Watch vogue live mtv awards around this same time of this and it’s ground breaking
thanx for the tip boo!😘
Love your reactions! You get it! 💛
Thank you!! 😁glad you enjoyed❤
She's #3 following The Beatles then The Who followed by Bruce Springfield and Elton John by quite a margin.
yep i know now - haha - check out my Madonna playlist ua-cam.com/video/9545v_khbO8/v-deo.html
Thanx 🥰
I ♥️ the I’m Breathless album.
We love you!!!!👍💙😎zane
i ❤ you all🤗
Hey. Yes this performance was excellent forsure!! She delivered bigtime! Was a big night Michael Jackson was her date!
as a HUGE MJ fan this made me like that performance even more "hee-hee"😂
@@EmpressReacts😁 king and queen!
Everything is so cool and omg i didn't even notice an earring stuck in her hair because the performance was so 🔥🔥🔥
You mean Warren Beatty (actor) not Dick Tracy (movie character). ✌️
Empress I'm loving your Madonna reactions. I've been a fan for years and it's refreshing to see someone as young as you connect with and get what she's saying. I highly recommend you check out a track of hers titled 'Rescue me'. To me it's a total bop and I think you'll feel the same.
😍 thanx! i'm taking the full Madonna journey, so I'm bound to get to it one day😂
Basically, Madonna's version of Marilyn has always been about refashioning the sex goddess of yore from an object of men's desire to a full-fledged subject who owns her own sexuality and expresses her own desire.
Thanx for the recommendation and this amazing context 🥰 understanding her intentions make me like this performance even more
What she did with Love don't live here anymore was a better vocal performance because its more Raw .
Empress it was one of the many songs from the movie Dick Tracy from I believe 1991 ..Madonna wrote most of them
oh snap! did she write this?😳
Legendary Broadway and Musical composer, Stephen Sondheim wrote this Oscar Award winning track for the 1990 movie 'Dick Tracy' starting Madonna and Warren Beatty etc.
And knowing THIS is the night her and MJ were dates make me like this performance even more 👑💯
@@EmpressReacts check out broadway diva Bernadette Peter’s version atop a Piano. Vocals, humor and curvz for days.
@@jjmm9066 cool, never heard of her, but all i needed to hear was curves for dayz 😂🥰
🙌🏻👑Ⓜ️
Peace Empress!!!
so glad you're enjoying my channel and that i'm doing your favs 😍 so sad about linda, but i'll def check out more of her songs and the other songs ou mentioned.
React to Live to Tell from The Confessions Tour. It's incredible 😍
Not a band doll, its an orchestra. And 5he tune is Sondheim.
😂sorry, not technical...band / orchestra they both play music and yall know what i mean
Please react to secret from Madonna. You rule!
thanx! i'll add it to the list
Far cry from that Like a Virgin MTV award performance
You have a great singing voice yourself!
Noted! Added to the list 🥰
She arrived with Michael Jackson’ yessssss
she did another movie with soundtrack single during true blue era called who's that girl ,hope you react to it
I know you dont do interviews too much....but she has one called VICE meets Madonna on UA-cam.. I think you'd really enjoy it .
Tu es adorable...encore!

Empress...watch the movie
Kieth sweat nobody reaction

For something way different from her - try Don't Tell Me.
Noted! I'll add it to the list 🥰
Great... Dick Tracy Style...!!!
i really like your channel and i mean no disrespect, but to me madonna is more of a dancer than a singer. She did study dance for many years.
I love how you always say " I wasn't expecting that" - that is MADONNA! it was always new, always fabulous, always mind blowing.
this was so good! Michael Jackson was her date that night!
omg! i ❤❤ MJ, makes this performance even more DOPE!😍
Dick Tracy movie, back in the day
