The low cadence work will have been to build strength in the legs (i.e. to be able to accelerate faster), it's a common training technique in triathletes who don't have enough time to be on their bikes for hours on end. Just because they're training like that doesn't mean they'll race like it, if you don't change the physiological stress on your body then it'll adapt and you'll stop progressing, reducing the benefits of said training.
+The Vegan Swan Just cause Durianrider is lean and fit, doesnt mean his training is the best for everyone. Low cadence TRAINING is good for strength in the legs, not low cadence everywhere...
+The Vegan Swan obviously they didnt show every second of the ride, that would have been silly. And GCN commented earlier that they didnt follow the group that did low cadence work. Just enjoy the video instead of trying to rip it apart with all the mistakes.
Crikey. I've never read the comments before. You do attract some special people. The videos just get better, professional, witty and informative. To be a complete creep I could only say if anything they need to be longer. I hope you've got some good classics stuff coming up, I can feel the stirring in my loins as late February approaches. Some more indoor training videos would be nice as well. Keep up the good work chaps.
+alan hall are you going to tell me that your body turns to far as an energy source when it is depleted of carbs. please say yes so I can commence today's class
+CTFU Cycling Tips They probably aren't eating an entire plate of potato wedges. The chef never claimed potato's were low carb. Eating low carb doesn't mean you have no carbs on your plate.
+Dan Lev there were 3 different groups of riders all doing different training!! GCN just followed the low carb training group, maybe some of you vegans should read a few comments before continually spouting about your diet and how superior you all are and STFU before you CTFU in future
Yet again a great video being used as a battering ram ! Low carb for a pro cyclist is higher than a normal person and the low carb day was probably after a carb loaded dinner! Also pros train the body into a depleted state so it learns to push that bit further, the one that can go the deepest is normally the winner! Each to their own as the saying goes! Great stuff GCN keep them coming! ( this channel should get a TV slot!)🚴🚵
I had an 8 speed 52/42 - 13/23 - It was too hard on the hills so I changed it to a 52/39 - 11-30, which made it easier. I now have a new bike with a compact setup.
Hey GCN, something that gets a brief mention in this show that I'd like to hear more about - the science of sleep in relation to training & recovery. Are post-ride daytime sleeps of any value? How long should you sleep over & above the normal 7 hours if you are doing endurance rides? Can you get a guru to tell us more? Ta
Jeez, everything is either black or white with you lot. Low carb is not NO carb and low carb for these endurance athletes is still gonna be pretty damn high carb relatively speaking!
@durianrider +DurianRider 's head will explode..."low-carb" AND "low-cadence" training mentioned in the same sentence (at around 03.50) !!!! Plus, just for good measure, another reference to "low-carb" by the chef (at around 06.57). Can't wait for his response :-)
+Didier Martins I hate too admit it. I try stopping myself but I keep going to watch their UA-cam channel. I can't help myself, it like watching a human train wreck.
mate you're completely wrong. they are TRAINING low carb not racing low carb. Durianrider is basically saying that no one can perform at their best low carb. None of these sky guys should ever dream of racing low carb because they'd all get dropped
Interesting to know they were going low carb / low cadence on this particular day. Since the on-bike objective was a full has climb, one would think they would need to be carbed up and max cadence. Naturally, speculation that physiological data for ketosis under exertion plays a role in this day's training, with weight loss an added benefit.
First, they don't do low carb training all the time. Second, low carb works for enhancing fat metabolism which save the high quality energy glycogen during races. It is vital for pro cyclist especially in tour
A lot of people misinterpreting the low carb thing, it's about training the body to efficient when low on fuel, the lower cadence is less aerobic and burns less fuel in the form of long and short chain carbs and more fuel in the form of slower burning fats and proteins so that you can burn all fuel sources efficiently, it also teaches your body to be efficient at the variety of cadences you'll have to encounter in a grand tour as they simply don't have the gear spread to spin 90 - 100 everywhere having big jumps in gear ratios when racing in a pack is a nightmare just ask anyone road racing with 1x setups,. This also teaches you how to suffer. so that when you race and have plenty of fuel available you are quite literally full of beans, energetic, and strong and able to push yourself harder cos your body and mind has learnt to dig deeper and burn whatever fuel is available as efficiently as possible . Train low, Race high. Pro racing puts a whole different level of stresses on the body compared to domestic style, a time trial during the week and a crit or a road race at the weekend does which is still probably more than most of people commenting on here are doing. PS yes I don't eat animal products as I know enough about nutrition to know I don't need to but I couldn't give rat's ass what other people eat as it's entirely up to others what they do with their bodies. All I'll say is watch The Road to Hell film and look at what they're eating pre-race and compare that to what today's pro riders are eating, it ain't more meat and less carbs that's for sure. Maybe ask Eddy Merckx how much quinoa, lentils beans, peas and nuts he used to eat as recovery food then ask how much of those the British Olympic and Sky team now eat and do a comparison.
Dan, if they use Training Peaks for their analytics, if the riders stats say that the rider needs a break, does the coaches allow for that or are they trying to get the most out of the training camp time?
You people do realize that low carb doesn't mean no carb and that potatoes actually have quite low carb content compared to other staple foods? Pasta, rice both have more. Bread has significantly more. They are also complex carbs and have a lot of nutrients/minerals.
my thoughts on the low carb training are so that they can get their bodies used to running out of fuel and still have something left to give. obviously they will still ctfu when competing. much better than only ever doing high carb training and your body crashing when that last banana is used up.
Team Sky are soooooo professional. In every sense of the word. The racing, the PR, the preparation, every detail in their outfit, everything. Very polished. Very sanitized. Very not likeable. Where is the sense of adventure? the personality? I see executives on wheels.
As usual, well presented and insightful video again boys, although Dan, considering the amount of time you spend on film why haven't you sorted out the mess of hair at the back of your head?
people saying low carb with pictures of potatoes and corn. does the team normally eat so much carbs that their version of low carb is still relatively high carb? or was the food they displayed off limits to the riders? or are gcn deliberately trolling?
+La ne trolling? are you dumb? do you think their job is to make a comedy show vs durianrider and confuse the viewers? this channel are for people at all ages eager to learn more about cycling.
Assuming theres no happy ending with the massages? which brings me to ask about the ejaculation protocol, i.e are they allowed to or are they like boxers told dont do it and how many like boxers disobey the order and how do the riders feel about it, does it affect their performance?
I didn't see many smiles amongst the riders and for them its probably just another day at the office. I don't think cycling would be fun anymore when it turns into a job.
+starovic89 My guess is probably its too cold for a Mojito but not too cold to use an Infinity. Or it could be also since the Protone is the Kask latest top of the line helmet, the sponsors are probably making them wear it to influence sales.
Low carb, low cadence. Surely they are trolling Harley. Or as someone else mentioned they could be using reverse psychology to get the opposition onto low-carb. On another note, I would watch all the product placement in the world so that they can then produce content like this. Great stuff guys.
LMAO at all the low carb comments. They don't go low carb all day, only before & during the ride up to a point where they'll start taking on carbs and have them in their post ride meal. So yes, they will eat potatoes & rice. It's called nutrient timing. They are trying to get their bodies to burn fat for fuel during the low carb rides.
You burn more muscle without carbs.. So that makes no sense. Also, leaving out carbs won't make you burn more fat.. You need to eat less kcals to burn more fat. Kcals is the measurement for all macro's (kh, fat, prot) combined. So if you have 1000 kcals of carb, you burn the same amount of fat as to having 1000 kcals of fat (food), or even 1000 kcals of protein. Only difference is that protein is a horrible energy source since it's not directly converted to glyocen. Carbs are basically glycon, so that why it works faster. Fat has to convert first. But at the end of the day, the total amount of kcals depends how much you gain or burn off of your own body.
+Frank M Coming back off the off season they have probably gained a little bit of weight and so this is how they shed it. I'm pretty sure durianrider only commented on being low carb for racing so I don't think anything here is going to send him into one of this rages...
I tell you what GCN, you should go and bloody tell team Sky they've got it all wrong, cause that's what you comments section say... Lol. What don't people understand about the video, it's a snap shot of the day - some general I site to what they are doing on the camp. GTFU... And secondly at what point in life did duraianrider become the barometer or reference point for all cycle training, they guys got some decent points that he makes but also makes a lot of noise
Great video. This team look so smooth and professional. On another note, does anyone else wish the vegan zealots would stop turning every single mention of nutrition into a vegan propaganda thread? You don't dig on animal products - we get it! Good for you. We are all glad it works for you, sincerely. Now stop trying to convert everybody else. It's getting really tired.
+Its me, Cause most of the Ford cars that are to be sold on the European market are made in Germany. As for the fact that Sky just switched their car sponsor my guess is that these brand new cars came straight from the German Ford shelves, hence the German numberplates. Also, this fleet of Fords will probably never leave the mainland as all the classics and grand tours are held there, so no need to put on a different numberplate, saves administration hassle ( and German plates might have insurance benefits?? ). The cars will probably be parked and serviced at Sky's service course near Gent in Belgium.
3:15 - Talk about how other teams overdo media obligations at camp.
7:40 - Media obligations.
Yeah. That part would make me go mad if I was a rider.
I'm glad GCN isn't considered typical "Media" :)
Says low carb and low cadence, though every shot showed every rider spinning and loading up on potatoes, corn and pancakes. Right.
+The Vegan Swan It's a case of, 'Do what I say, not what I do!'
+The Vegan Swan Just cause Durianrider is lean and fit, doesnt mean his training is the best for everyone. Low cadence TRAINING is good for strength in the legs, not low cadence everywhere...
+The Vegan Swan Training camps are more than one day long.... that will have just been one form of training of many utilised
+The Vegan Swan obviously they didnt show every second of the ride, that would have been silly. And GCN commented earlier that they didnt follow the group that did low cadence work. Just enjoy the video instead of trying to rip it apart with all the mistakes.
I would 100% ride a bike for a living. Travel, healthy pre peeped food, massages! Damn living the best life.
Please make a dedicated track cycling channel. Love the videos!
Its great to know what team sky exactly does!! I'd prefer more skills and tricks videos
"Low Carb"
5 trays of potatoes for dinner....
Erm... That's an afternoon/ evening meal. They have already done their training for the day by that stage. I'd say their breakfast was low carb.
+alan hall most of your glycogen stores are built up the day(s) before you use them. so that evening meal will be for tomorrow's 'low carb' training
+Edward Smith do you know what a fat burning ride is?
+alan hall are you going to tell me that your body turns to far as an energy source when it is depleted of carbs. please say yes so I can commence today's class
+Edward Smith is that a yes or no? It's not a hard question.
Someone needs to tell the Sky chef that potatoes are NOT low carb xD
+CTFU Cycling Tips They probably aren't eating an entire plate of potato wedges. The chef never claimed potato's were low carb. Eating low carb doesn't mean you have no carbs on your plate.
+Dan Lev Touche
+CTFU Cycling Tips - and no corn or pancakes!
+Dan Lev there were 3 different groups of riders all doing different training!! GCN just followed the low carb training group, maybe some of you vegans should read a few comments before continually spouting about your diet and how superior you all are and STFU before you CTFU in future
+Dan Lev sorry that was a reply for CTFU cycling tips
Yet again a great video being used as a battering ram ! Low carb for a pro cyclist is higher than a normal person and the low carb day was probably after a carb loaded dinner! Also pros train the body into a depleted state so it learns to push that bit further, the one that can go the deepest is normally the winner!
Each to their own as the saying goes!
Great stuff GCN keep them coming! ( this channel should get a TV slot!)🚴🚵
low carb is good especially on a classic steel road bike
+Brian Cartoscelli Classic steel 7 speed road bike with a 52-42T chainring and 13-19T cassette. Spinning is for wimps and pansies!
+Richard M I had a 52/42 but switched to 53/39. love it
I had an 8 speed 52/42 - 13/23 - It was too hard on the hills so I changed it to a 52/39 - 11-30, which made it easier. I now have a new bike with a compact setup.
2:09 Looks like this car has once encountered a Shimano support car.
Too funny
0.00-8.37 , my favourite part
What new videos can GCN bring to us if sky is the limit?
Dan's doing a video on Jupiter next. Or maybe it was Jupiler, I forget.
+guerthal Or Mars. Or was it Milkyway?
Group rides on Uranus.
+smshdchrb Max efforts on Uranus lol
Bravo GCN!!
Pretty sure the "Low carb" is just disinformation to the other teams.
Doing low carb with potatoes, Team Sky Logic.
I would say you've got the idea!
Rod says they don't do media stuff at training camps, then what do we see? Riders filming adverts and promos after riding 190km!
Minimize not completely
Nice. We love those kind of behind the scenes.
Ta
Thanks GCN! This really is exclusive content. Awesome.
Jeez, everything is either black or white with you lot. Low carb is not NO carb and low carb for these endurance athletes is still gonna be pretty damn high carb relatively speaking!
+smshdchrb people assume they eat 7000 calories a day but that is not the case... just look for interviews with Froome and Cav
Exactly!
they onky eat 6 to 7k calories during grand tours. nobody said they eat that much all the time...
WOW very Nice.. Again GCN knocks it out of the park.. Great piece of work..
low carb training? Any chance of a video on that?
@durianrider +DurianRider 's head will explode..."low-carb" AND "low-cadence" training mentioned in the same sentence (at around 03.50) !!!! Plus, just for good measure, another reference to "low-carb" by the chef (at around 06.57). Can't wait for his response :-)
Everyone, don't watch durianrider vids. It's toxic and poisonous.
Only in my dreams. It be nice to Harley head explode. He already got the hair cut for it.
+Didier Martins I hate too admit it. I try stopping myself but I keep going to watch their UA-cam channel. I can't help myself, it like watching a human train wreck.
please do more of these! so awesome!!
Oof, the season's barely begun and the RS window on that Ford is already cracked!
I like their Jersey. Looks like from the movie tron.
Well, that team briefing was full of interesting information.
Great video guys.
Question: can you do a video on 'Team Support Car etiquette"? Maybe a top 10.
Thanks.
Looks like the Col de sa batalla and sa calobra loop from Pollensa...a classic.
3:50 "CTFU. Spin to win."
Two mantras destroyed in five seconds. Impressive.
Not that carbs and spinning don't have their place, but it doesn't seem like it pays off to never deviate from them.
+Maxmaxz Do the right thing at the right time...
It´s rather STFU now LOL
spin lika fcking washing machine
Lots of talk about low-carb. I think that weird guy, with the weird hair from Australia is going to lose his mind on this one!
Mr 30 bananas a day
Durianrider will say "they don't need high-carbs there on the gas"
+Nathan Teskey his hair makes him more aerodynamic and it also makes him look like some kind of Turkey with that thing on his head🐓🐓
+Nathan Teskey not sure if turkey or pineapple
mate you're completely wrong. they are TRAINING low carb not racing low carb. Durianrider is basically saying that no one can perform at their best low carb. None of these sky guys should ever dream of racing low carb because they'd all get dropped
Will tilting the saddle slightly in the forward direction make us faster?
Do the riders use different garmin throughout the rides as I'm sure the batteries don't last the sort of time they spend in the saddle
Interesting to know they were going low carb / low cadence on this particular day. Since the on-bike objective was a full has climb, one would think they would need to be carbed up and max cadence. Nice video I just love Chris froome
First, they don't do low carb training all the time. Second, low carb works for enhancing fat metabolism which save the high quality energy glycogen during races. It is vital for pro cyclist especially in tour

nice one guys!! - they put the "training" in training camp!!
At what time do they see the team doc that manages the oxygen vector program?
Spot on hair cut Dan.
Nice, however I hope GCN can look at some other British teams like Madison Genesis soon? Sorry if I missed that video :)
ARGH that massage looks soothing :(
I need one but that means it's coming out of my pocket
Was there not a Cervelo Test Team training camp?
Plenty of carbs in the food that was shown on the video.
An HOUR of massage? If you do some foam rolling after a ride, how much is enough?
my thoughts on the low carb training are so that they can get their bodies used to running out of fuel and still have something left to give. obviously they will still ctfu when competing. much better than only ever doing high carb training and your body crashing when that last banana is used up.
i know its pretty much the same, but i think team sky's new kit looks really nice!! a deeper black and lighter blue i think? :)
Team Sky are soooooo professional. In every sense of the word. The racing, the PR, the preparation, every detail in their outfit, everything. Very polished. Very sanitized. Very not likeable.
Where is the sense of adventure? the personality? I see executives on wheels.
What is the song at 1:40? Don't see it in the description this time
team sky! i love this team
As usual, well presented and insightful video again boys, although Dan, considering the amount of time you spend on film why haven't you sorted out the mess of hair at the back of your head?
I'm surprised nobody has picked up on the low carb contradiction thing
Last year?
8:05 Aerodynamics it was a little more then a month back... :)
Be nice to see the jiiffy bags.
Go out for 5, 6, 7 hours so I can go shopping. Priceless.
is the drivers window smashed on the ford mondeo 1:59
When do they take their EPO?
WHAT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE CAR! get on ya bike with the guys ya slacker haha ;)
Good one, thanks!
2:01 Team Sky have a german number plate? :D Nice
people saying low carb with pictures of potatoes and corn. does the team normally eat so much carbs that their version of low carb is still relatively high carb? or was the food they displayed off limits to the riders? or are gcn deliberately trolling?
+La ne trolling? are you dumb? do you think their job is to make a comedy show vs durianrider and confuse the viewers? this channel are for people at all ages eager to learn more about cycling.
Firzon do you know what carbs look like? See if can identify any in their low carb food.
+La ne they had mutiple groups and only one was low carb. with a personal chef they may have had seprate diets vs the other groups
+La ne There were different training groups and so the chef needs to cater for all the riders and staff.
+Simon Richardson La ne is not paying any attention he see what he wants to see.
I don't think cycling would be fun anymore when it turns into a job.
good training
Are they required to use ONLY Protone helmet ? Havent seen any of rider using Infinity or Mojito
+starovic89 My guess is probably its too cold for a Mojito but not too cold to use an Infinity. Or it could be also since the Protone is the Kask latest top of the line helmet, the sponsors are probably making them wear it to influence sales.
Durian Rider did not sponsor this video. Low carb, torque session :-)
What's the name of the song that plays from 1:40 until 1:55 ? Thanks in advance.
Never mind, allready found it.. ;-)
Glass Caves - Out of Control
Presumably Kiry i.e. the Terminator was just getting his orders from Skynet on how to destroy the peloton over facetime
great video!
I wonder how many grams of carbohydrate pre-ride and every hour on the bike is considered low carb.
Low carb, low cadence. Surely they are trolling Harley. Or as someone else mentioned they could be using reverse psychology to get the opposition onto low-carb.
On another note, I would watch all the product placement in the world so that they can then produce content like this. Great stuff guys.
You may think the sun shines out of Harley's arsehole but I can assure you the pros are laughing at that wanker.
what happened to the support car's window
Double helpings of Fluimucil and Salbutamol for dessert MM-MMM!
The 10 dislikes are probably all from durianrider's youtube accounts
I think I saw Lance Armstrong in the background with a Team Sky kit on....is that true?
a scarily well oiled machine . world leaders
Durianrider gave it a thumbs down for the low carb training!
Show us the bit where they use corticosteroids!
Can we get a caption competition for 5:20
Low carb mentioned several times, yet all Vegans know this is impossible for pros.
+Officer Baron Its the illuminati - they kow tow to them so they will say whatever they are told to.
+Officer Baron It's not impossible - I reckon they strip off muscle that way
Haha I wonder what @durianrider would say about this
+Officer Baron you mean because DurianRider said it?
But i see the logic in it, they train their body to burn stored fat more effectively.
+Frank M Coming back off the off season they have probably gained a little bit of weight and so this is how they shed it. I'm pretty sure durianrider only commented on being low carb for racing so I don't think anything here is going to send him into one of this rages...
Nice video!!!
training plan #1 stock up on EPO, #2 more EPO
Low carbs mean endurance training where they are not only burning carbs but also fats
Are that cracks on the window??? 2:40
Where was Chris Froome?
2:35 someone forgot to tell them there's a hill there o.O
this video would probably have been awesome, had I don't done to much Dan Lloyd training before. 🍻🍺
Matt looks the size of a Hobbit next to Vasil Kiryienka! 1:30
It seems like Sky was just trying to mess with their competitors by giving them alternative facts.
It's getting really tired.
what was Matt doing to that subscription box?!
Sky is dope
Why do the team cars of a british cycling team on training camp in Mallorca have german number plates ?
+Its me, Cause most of the Ford cars that are to be sold on the European market are made in Germany. As for the fact that Sky just switched their car sponsor my guess is that these brand new cars came straight from the German Ford shelves, hence the German numberplates. The cars will probably be parked and serviced at Sky's service course near Gent in Belgium.
+sgirwan not forgetting they need left hand drive cars for the continent too.
alan hall True that!
Is the coaches window cracked?
