    I watched the mini series in the early 1980's on VHS, this led me read the novel and take Japanese language in high school.
    I've lived in Japan twice since the 1990's, am married to a Japanese woman and still visit Tokyo yearly (before COVID).
    Thank you Mr Clavell, wherever you are.

    I find it fascinating that a man who must have suffered so much as a prisoner of the Japanese at Changi prison in WW2 became profoundly interested in Asian culture, instead of turning that experience into a hatred for all things Japanese as most people did. 'King Rat' must have been based on many actual events and shows the depths to which the human race will sink under intense pressure.

      Only two books were about the Japanese. The others were China and one about Iran. I loved his books and read all of them. I studied his writing and Margret Mitchell when I wrote mine hoping to get close to their story telling abilities. My sister-in-law said she got PSTD reading my novel. I might have achieved my goal.

      Many years ago, growing up in HK I used to live near his former house, lovely place on the water next to Sai Kung with the most beautiful view of the small islands and the ocean through the bay. I feel it would have been idyllic for a man chasing peace and quiet.

    oh God, I can't describe in words how much I love "Shogun". I read this book when I was like 15/16 (basically stole it from my school's library, still have it almost 15 years later), took me a whole year to read it, and it was worth every damn night spent. It basically shaped my way of viewing life, it's what drove me to take Japanese classes, I can't imagine how my life would be like without having read Shogun. I still have to dive into the other Asian Saga's books, but Shogun is like a first girlfriend to me

      I'm reading Shogun and Gaijin. Shogun I have a mere 200 pages left after it took me 10 years to read (I'm a slow reader) but I enjoyed every moment of it. Gaijin I love too and am about 300 or 400 pages left. Clavell is a master writer. I have Taipan and King Rat also but I haven't fully committed myself to them yet.

    I've enjoyed all of the entries in Clavell's "Asian Sagas." And while Tai-Pan, Shogun, and Noble House are my favorites, interestingly, it is Gai-jin that I think about most often. The lack of plot line resolution (not of all threads) was really marvelous.

    How can you interview an author without reading their book first? I read Shogun a few years after it came out. I couldn’t put it down and it’s over 1100 pages. I was upset when I had less than 100 pages left. Tried to slow down because I didn’t want it to be over.

    I found an original paperback copy of shogun. I love the the cover art. That samurai sword. Never made time to read it. I've watched the tv mini series starring Richard Chamberlain. But I'm sure it's no where near is great as the novel

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 5 років тому +6

      There's obviously a lot more exposition and historical detail in the novel. But as mini-series go, Shogun is pretty damn good.
      Chamberlain gives the performance of his life in it, in my opinion, and the fact that it was actually shot in Japan, with Japanese
      actors,helps a tremendous lot to make the thing feel reasonably authentic.
      My only gripe with it, is that the Japanese actors are speaking English. In the novel, much more is made of just how complicated
      it is to be a stranger in a strange land when you don't know a word of its spoken language.
      And not only do you get to experience Blackthorne's frustrations first-hand, but you also get to know just exactly what his
      Japanese captors and friends think of him, which is not something the TV version could spend too much time on, of course.
      So yeah, read the book for the whole story. And watch it on TV when you don't feel like reading. Both are great.

      @mathewthompson7683 5 років тому +4

      I highly, highly, highly recommend the novel even though it’s really long. Another option is to audiobook it. There’s so much in there that a series could never capture

    I read King Rat, and other than demonstrating a distinctive style, I didn't think too much if it. I learned of the TV miniseries Shōgun after it aired. It was a true phenomenon, but i didn't want to be a joiner AND be late to the party, so I just ignored the VHS. Then about 20 years ago someone I respected told me that this book changed their life. Well I finally finished the original Dune series, and i am looking for something to get my teeth into so I'm going to give this a try. Wish me luck -- I might not have time to come up for air for a year of two if i like the sequels!
