The Ants and the Grasshopper lived in the great field.
개미와 베짱이가 넓은 들판에 살고 있었습니다.
The Ants were always busy gathering much grain for winter.
개미들은 겨울을 대비해서 많은 곡식을 모으느라 항상 바빴습니다.
They worked hard and their merry neighbor, the Grasshopper, never paid attention to them.
개미들은 열심히 일했고 그들의 유쾌한 이웃인 베짱이는 조금의 관심도 주지 않았습니다.
When winter came, it put an end to the work of the Ants and the festivity of the Grasshopper.
겨울이 왔을 때, 개미들의 일도 베짱이들의 축제도 끝이 났습니다.
But one fine day in winter, when the Ants were spreading their grain in the sun to dry,
하지만 어느 맑은 겨울날, 개미들이 그들의 곡식을 햇볕에 말리기 위해 넓게 펴고 있을 때
the Grasshopper, who was nearly dying with hunger, chanced to pass by.
배가 고파 거의 죽어가는 베짱이 한 마리가 우연히 지나가게 되었습니다.
"Good day to you, kind neighbor," she said, "Will you not lend me a little food?"
"안녕하세요, 이웃 여러분" 하고 베짱이가 말했습니다, "저에게 먹을 것을 좀 빌려 주지 않으시겠어요?"
"I will certainly pay you before this time next year."
"내년 이맘때까지 꼭 갚아 드릴게요."
"How does it happen that you have no food of your own?" an old Ant asked.
"본인이 먹을 것도 없다니 도대체 어떻게 된 건가?" 하고 나이 많은 개미가 물었습니다.
"There was much food in the field where we lived all through the summer,
우리가 여름 내내 살았던 들판에는 많은 음식이 있었고
and your people seemed to be active enough."
자네들도 매우 바빠 보였는데.
"What on earth were you doing?"
자네들은 도대체 무엇을 하고 있었나?
"Oh," the Grasshopper said, forgetting her hunger, "I sang all day long, and all night long, too."
"오," 하고 베짱이는 자신의 배고픔을 잊고 말했습니다, "저는 밤낮으로 노래를 했어요."
"Well, then," the Ant said, "if you found it so joyful to sing all the summer, you may as well try to dance away the winter."
"그래, 그럼," 그 개미는 말했습니다, "자네가 여름 내내 노래하는 것이 그렇게 즐거웠다면, 이번 겨울은 춤을 추며 보내는 것도 좋을 것 같구먼."
And he went on with his work, all the while singing the old song: "We Ants never borrow; we Ants never lend."
그리고 그 개미는 일을 계속하면서, 오래 된 노래를 불렀습니다: "우리 개미들은 절대 빌리지도 않고; 빌려주지도 않아요."
