Digha Mohana Fish Market
Fisheries is the main business of people living near the mohana. Along the road leading to the mohana there are several small villages of fishermen. Their trawlers remain grounded in the creek running beside the road. During high tide when the water in the creek rises, the fishermen venture out to the sea for fishing in the trawlers. They remain is water for several days, catching fish. When they return, the fish is auctioned at Digha Mohana Fish Market. Highest bidder gets the fish, which is then transported to various markets. The market is controlled by Digha Fishermen & Fish Traders Association (D.F.F.T.A.), an umbrella organisation of 1425 members, having around 2000 Fish Boats and 145 fish auction points. Important catch from the mohana market are like Silver Pomfret, Black Pomfret, Chinese Pomfret, Hilsa, Prawn (Sea Tiger, White, Brown, Deep sea, Kari Kari, Flower Tiger), Eels, Crabs, Cat Fish, Cuttlefish, Squids, Tuna (Blu Eye, Yellow Fin), Bombayduck. Around 70% to 80 % of the catch from here are exported abroad, thus earning the place international connection. Some negligible portion of the catch is also sold locally. Tourists can buy the prized fishes, and get them cooked by local stalls. There are several food stalls in the mohana area and in the town who specializes in cooking fish bought by tourists for a charge.
