The dumbest part of this convo is that Trevor's cap hit stays below 10% until 2027(where it climbs to 11% of the total est cap). This is why you sign your QB early. You can stretch the new money over the final 2 years of the rookie contract. He sells jerseys and tickets. The owners will make their money on him. Even if he's league avg over the next 4 seasons, theres no damage done to the team's ability to build around him. If he plays like a top 10 QB, he's a certified bargain by 2026. We're all out here making fun of Jerry Jones for dragging his feet and ruining his cap when it comes to paying his players on their 2nd & 3rd contracts, but then we trash the Jags for avoiding that very situation. Also it's worth noting that the Jags built a bad rep when Coughlin came back to oversee the football operations. They had to avoid this contract drama.

I think QB salaries are getting out of control. Especially when a current mid tier is getting the highest salary in the league just because he's the "next guy up".
There should be a cap within the cap. No single player regardless of position should count for more than 12% of the team cap.

Invest in making a more complete team and weapons and look for the younger, cheaper QB is a better alternative. The thing I think a lot of people are missing with this whole situation is that if Trevor doesn’t take that next step Baalke is getting fired for not surrounding him with the right talent, and Pederson is getting fired for not developing him. Khan is going to bring in an entirely new coaching staff and hire a new GM who will blow up the roster at which point Trevor’s contract and the team’s cap space won’t matter anyway. By the time they’re ready to contend again Trevor will be gone and most of his money will have already been paid. It’s not like there was a scenario where they waited to pay him, he didn’t play well, and Trent and Pederson get to draft a new QB and start over. The Dolphins are an entirely different team when Tyreek isn't out there. More often than not if you pay early you end up in the Cowboys situation... There are only so many elite QBs, especially ones that stay healthy. You need a lot more than just a great QB to have any bit of success, so it's a whole lot easier to just pay the one you have that is used to your system as long as he is top 10ish. Otherwise, you just roll the dice on praying you can draft and develop another QB, who you'd let walk 1-2 years after they develop a bit.

@6foot7natiboy but they increased the cap hit those years so the cap hits later aren't as big. After the 5th year he has no guaranteed money left and the deal will be redone. And Burrows 5 years include one of those rookie year deals also. It's a difference of about $90 million over 5 years in cap hit, that's not because of 1 year.

Here's my thought: not every contact has to be the record breaker. If you offered TL the same deal the Lions gave JG... He'd still be overpaid. However, you would have another three million to pay other pieces of your team. And if your QB is such a diva that he needs to be the top paid in All of Football over seeing the roster as a while get better, then yeah, he needs to prove it. Everyone has seen cheaper QBs winning and were like, "oh that's the formula" for a decade, but everyone keeps over paying QBs. Only Mahomes has won while having a massive deal recently. $50mil is not a slap in the face like these guys ACT like it is. The rbs have way more to complain about salary wise.

All that remains is how the pieces of that pie are distributed. Rookies are paid on a pre-determined scale already. No reason the entire roster couldn't be as well. It would ensure the most equitable and balanced distribution of talent across the league (which again, is the purpose of the draft in the first place). As I said prior - it will never happen.
