If you can find an original v1, the Amp Tweaker Tight Fuzz (from James Brown, the original Peavey 5150 circuit designer), all the tonal controls let you dial it in to any guitar or amp and you can dial everything in from a Fuzzface, Tonebender or muff style. For overall, use with any guitar or bass board, the Green Russian Big Muff variant, which i have the EHX reissue, which sounds great if you want those liquid lead lines or wall of fuzz noise or huge power chords and riffs. But the one important thing is to to use a mid forward voiced naturally non-scooped amp that is set to just over edge of break up with some light crunch overdrive already happening, as those power tubes need to be working a bit and already compressing at the amps proper volume level. You'll hear the fuzz open up and really sound like you hear it on records once you get passed that certain power amp volume level.
The Fuzz side of the Sun Lion is a Dallas Arbiter style Fuzz Face where as the Sun Bender is based on the Tone Bender 1.5 circuit. Not necessarily apples to apples. I'm also pretty sure the middle knob on all the germanium fuzzes is a bias knob. Set at 12 noon the bias is around the normal 5v.
The stank face adds to the filthy sounds 😆. I’ve been playing 37 years and was never fond of fuzz. But like some things over my playing years my opinions change and I’ve started to touch on it a little bit for a different texture. Some friends and I started a surf rock band so I’m using it for a little something different on a couple of our songs.
Some nice fuzzes for me: - Velouria FX Witchcraft - "Rat" - KMA Dead Stag - CTC Falcon (when cranked) - TSL (double tube(high voltage)) Big Muff & Rangemaster - The crunch channel on the THR10 you can find some nice sounds also - Holy Island Abracadaver
Well, I can tell you're a Led Zepplin fan. LOL! Sounding good as usual! Do you ever get a pedal that sounds like a blown speaker? I was trying out a pedal a while back and it had a real rattlly sound like a blown speaker. What kind of song could you use that with? Keep on rocking! 😀
@@LeonTodd Try not to go down the rabbit hole of all the options at Mikes site LOL! Silicon transistors do avoid the temperamental tone issues that germanium and others have, that said. I believe the Astro Tone has a silicon transistor.
One by one I retired many of my Fuzz pedals. Great as toys to amuse myself but totally useless in my band. I kept one. A Tonebender I bought years ago when finding all original parts was still very affordable. The others I sold off. There are many very good sounding affordable Fuzz pedals that the tone can drift a little but not let you down. In a blindfold test are virtually indistinguishable in a tune with a band playing even on a recording.

My current favs are Shaun Klinger All-In-One Bender & the Buzz Fuzz pedals and the Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz.

The Proco Rat isn't actually a fuzz. It does give a very nice fuzz sound, but it is a distortion.

I usually add fuzz to an overdriven amp or in front of an OD pedal. Never gotten any useful tones from fuzz into a clean or lightly broken up amp.
Just a heads up mate - the 'Sun' side of the Sunlion isn't a Sun-Bender. It's a Sunface (Fuzzface).
