Noot's a guy whose charisma and perfect timing at center stage in the WBC made him an instant celebrity, I think much more than his actual play and availability. He feels like a guy that could net us a trade-win in a package for a position of higher need (see above-average starting pitcher).
Nootbaar is one of those guys I REALLY wanted to believe in, as an everyday player for us. I still remember that catch he made in what I think was his first MLB call up, and the tagline riffed off of Klondike Bars: What would you dooooooooo, for a Lars Nootbaar? I hoped he'd have a somewhat consistent slashline in the ballpark of .275/.330/.510. Nothing crazy, but good. Unfortunately, based on the last two and a half seasons, I feel like Noot is our new Tyler O'Neil.
I said we should've used Noot and Gorman at the end of the 22 season, when their value was highest, and maybe convinced a team like the Mariners to part with a SP like Logan Gilbert. That won't happen at this point, and now with Saggase knocking on the door, both Gorman and Noot are looking like bench guys.
So, yeah... I'd LOVE to be proven wrong, but, if Noot could be used to swing a good trade, I'd say do it. Scott II and Siani are both lefthanded OFs, who all can play CF consistently. Donovan is also a lefty bat, and since the club is so desperate to have both righties and lefties off the bench, Noot's spot in our lineup is getting more and more cramped.
Just my 2 cents.
Lars has a career year in him. Vic will be good in center. Gorman can still to get himself together. Walker is an elite player. I’ve listen to or been at almost every game this year. They had quite a few games, especially early on, they could have won. Before the season started I was already looking forward to 2025. So many young hitters and pitchers. Who is gunna be clutch and who isn’t, we need to find out.
Edit: and let’s get right staff in here to make it happen!
Noot in his 3 full MLB seasons has averaged only 110 games or so. That's not going to cut it; he misses way too much baseball. I've never looked at him as star potential. He's yet another example of the St Louis talking heads over inflating the caliber of player we have. Donovan is the only OF we have that we can count on.
Have you looked at why Noot has missed so much time? His first major league IL stint came after Opening Day 2023. The only reason he didn't play a full season in 2022 is because they optioned him to Memphis several times that year. He had some bad luck on batted balls in April and May of that year, but he started hitting the ball harder in June, and the results started going his way in July.
As for his injuries, at least two of his 2023 injuries were fluke accidents on the field, not from poor conditioning. IIRC, he hurt a finger sliding into a base on Opening Day, and a foul ball struck him in the lower abdomen (worryingly close to his Noots and Baar) in August. You can argue about his back injury on May 29 from leaping into the OF wall while making a catch; that kind of thing just happens sometimes in the OF.
In 2024, he hurt his ribs during spring training. I didn't find or remember more info about it, but it seems like it was from an impact, not from pulling a muscle, ligament, or tendon. His oblique strain in late May put him on the shelf for all of June and the first week of July.
Bottom line: He's only had two injury-plagued seasons, not three, and most of his injuries come from impacts and collisions, not from poor conditioning. Perhaps he needs to adjust his play style in the OF to protect himself a bit better.
I don't want to go out on a limb, but Noot seems like a prime candidate to flourish after leaving the Cards. Would we be able to pull Teoscar in F.A. and trade Noot to L.A.? He would probably become an all-star then get hurt.
Sorry but I am one that don't see it in Nootbaar
He is average at best
If he is platooning and batting 7 to 9 in the order, then he can provide good value. If he is starting everyday and batting 1-5 in the lineup you're in trouble.
He is a meh player. Time to move on from him as a starter
NO ONE has built more equity from being a media darling at the WBC than Lars Midbaar.
Oh yeah, we want Gorman in the middle of the lineup for that clutch strikeout. Ditto Walker. Ditto Goldschmidt.
Rally killers during the heart of the season back when we thought we were somebody. Arenado too for the most part.
Keep all low k rate hitters Burly, Noot,Donnie,Winn and Herrera. B-Schaeff I heard you say you would take a lineup full of Brendan Donavon's awhile back. I couldn't agree more.
Without Burly and Donovan this team is 15 games under 500. Goldschmidt and Arenado were no shows back when games counted. Ready to move on from both.
Having watched Noot the last 2 yrs, i just dont see his upside value. He is a very average defensive outfielder and less than average hitter. This seems the trend for Cardinals outfielders the last several yrs. so what is the Upside for holding on to him? They need more than ONE middle of the order bat! Winn should stay at the # 1 slot. This team must have better offense period!!!!!
Cards need more production from the outfield
And 1B, 2B (Gorman), 3B, and catcher.
I've always wished we could see a full season of Noot and he could get rolling. I think we should see what we could get for Noot now before we end up giving him away in two years.
I know we have talked about relievers and how they flame out the O's released kimbrel
Nice job sir
I’m a big Noot fan and think he should be an everyday player. Hopefully he stays healthy though.
When you look at when teams started shifting all the time, it destroyed the careers of left handed pull hitters like Matt Carpenter and Jay Bruce. The opposite can be said of pitchers too. That some soft tossing pitchers were taking advantage of the shift and it was boosting their careers. I think this is what has happened to Miles Mikolas. Look at his numbers with the shift and look at his numbers after the shift ban. Night and day different.
A whole different outfield would be fine
Remember a few years ago when Mo said.... We can't give up Flaherty, Carlson, O'Neill and Gorman for Soto? And when fans said why not?, Mo gave his usual arrogant flippant attitude.
Based on production, over rated.
As I was listening to your comments i couldn't help but have the thought that the Cardinals are drowning in mediocrity at every turn. And until the talent drafted and developed in system begins to be consistently above average we will remain in that pergatory. Because we sure aren't buying our way out of it.
He's the poster child for an average ball player. Average defense, average bat, average speed. If he's your fourth outfielder, that's fine. But if you're counting on him to be an everyday player, you have a weak outfield. He's not terrible but how anyone ever thought he was going to be a star, is beyond me.
He’s an established 3 WAR player when on the field, but his statcast suggests he’s a 5 WAR talent. He’s not a bust, he’s absolutely a starting caliber player on a good team. It’s the nagging injuries that have slowed him down.

Last year when Tyler O"Neil was given away I wrote to you and said STL really blew the deal, giving away Tyler and you wrote back and said, No their best outfielder was NootBaar. What a joke.
I think Nootbaar is overrated. he is a little under average he has never been a good hitter not even in the minors.
He's been above league average offensively every year in MLB
@@bschaeffer12 only if you add his walks. I'm old school I believe ball on the bat for base hits is the only average to look at
@@reddrydor that's a bad, bad philosophy. Do runners on first base not count toward the chance to score runs? Very poor philosophy.
Overrated. He's a good 4th outfielder that can spot play center... But I think I would rather have Siani or Scott as the 4th. Then you can have a *bopper in LF that is below average defensively (I would keep Noot if Scott obviously needs another year in AAA) ... They need a LF like *Rooker. A CF like Siani or Scott ... and Walker in RF ... Trade Gorman and Herrera while they both still have trade value ... Rooker Scott Walker Siani has potential for 75+ bombs 100+ steals
Nootbar doesn't have speed. Doesn't have a great arm. Doesn't play great defense. Doesn't hit home runs. Doesn't steal bases. Doesn't drive in a lot of runs.
He's good at drawing walks, which is what drives his OPS / wRC. If you don't believe walks are as important as the advance stats value them, then it's hard to look at him as an above average hitter / player.
He's not terribly exciting.
When I hear this Siani noise and “utility”, his utility is only utility.
How do you expect Cards fans to get their gear on over Siani?
Is this what we’re relegated to? Why is that acceptable?
It feels like “Mo-Speak” has taken over the media, “CLEARLY”.
@@ScottyPeabody well, it's not. Siani has utility off the bench. I call it utility because that's the correct word for what he would provide. Usefulness by doing a variety of things.
Trying to figure out why Donnie, and to a lesser extent, Lars caught fire after the season was lost. Thinking they need to move on from Burly. Guy has been useless since the all star game.
"Next year when the cardinals are theoretically in a pennant chase"
Lmaooooo
Hey theory is nice
The Cardinals have hyped Noot from day one. Two Donovans are worth 5 Noots. Cards were just looking for another bobble head and sales of jersey. This guy is either in love with Noot or doesn’t yet really know baseball.
Noot is a very average ball player. Not an impact player. I think he's overrated in the St. Louis area but I don't think nationally. I live in St. Louis.
Overated never panned out.
.240 hitter.
You can get that anywhere
Can’t seem to stay healthy and when he is healthy, he’s nothing special.
He never really produces. Part of this badly flawed roster.
Typical cardinal outfielder the last few years . Blah at best
Lars Nootbaar is VERY OVERATED and nothing more than a 4th outfielder. If his name was Jack Smith instead of Lars Nooooooooootbaaaaaaaaaaar you would never hear anything about him. This team loves to promote certain players and get the fans behind them.
Every stat through the majority of his career suggests that assessment is terribly wrong. His skills are ridiculous. Some of the best plate discipline in the entire league. His statcast is beautiful. He just has to stay healthy and we’ve got a 4-5 WAR player
@@Samir-3737 Having a batting average of .228, .261, and .243 in each of the last three seasons does not exactly scream ridiculous skills to me. He has never played more than 117 games in a season. He is overrated and does not produce enough to be an everyday player. I would take his stats as a fourth outfield all day long but not an everyday player.
@@jerryfranks1158 if you’re using batting average as the primary source of if a hitter is good or not, then you must have thought Aaron Miles and Skip Schumaker were some top tier hitters. Sorry for the snark, but batting average is outdated man. It has its place and isn’t meaningless, but OBP, OPS, and OPS+ are so much better than batting average to determine a hitter’s worth. That’s the current general consensus around baseball
@@Samir-3737 No, neither were top tier hitters. Miles had decent run from 04 through 08 and Skip was a solid player during his run. But, nobody built either up like they were something they weren't. They simply had a role and they played it. Again, if Noot played 150 games a year, popped 20 plus home runs and drove in 80 I may feel different about him. He just hasnt shown it to me yet. What he has shown me is a guy you can plug in any outfield position to give your three better players a day off.
Overrated, way overrated, sorry Noot, love ya
Overrated. Nootbaar has had more chances at the MLB level that a lot of equally capable guys will ever get and he's proven nothing. No improvement in batting average, strikeout rate, power numbers, defense...anything. He's literally the same player he was 3 years ago. Give someone else a shot.
He's a career hitter above MLB league average. Every year he's played.
I like him but he’s overrated
