@Paul Fryer The only reason that there’s edits in the video is because it started out 15 minutes longer. The video is about 40 minutes before I started editing it. Most people won’t sit through a 40 minute video including me haha! The songs are easy to play and figure out. I am not an expert in metal. Just to be honest. But you just put in words something I was feeling while watching this video. Half of the top 10 sounds to me like some Nu metal (as it was called back in the Linkin Park era) but without anything new. I don't know if this is some kind of blasphemy, but that's how it feels to me.
Some of those songs were pretty tame and some nu metal-nickleback mixing. The kickass metal playlist is generally not much other than jock-jam esque pump up hard rock/metal.
Rick I just love the enthusiasm you have for music of all genres provided they bring something to the table with great composition and\or musical competency.
He really does just seem to like it all and doesn't have anything negative to say. Not even "this isnt something i usually listen to, but.." It's refreshing.
This is fantastic. My 44 year old daughter's fiancé, Steve, plays 5 string bass in a metal band. I've been telling Steve to check you out. This should do it. I'm 73 and began playing at an early age. Music adds so much to life.
This is such a fantastic video - I learned loads, am in awe of RB’s talent and now intend to download some albums from bands I’d never heard before. Rick is, quite simply, The Man.
Loving the content Rick, thank you! Pretty much why I listen almost exclusively to Metal/subgenres now - SO much great musicianship across a vast array of styles
No surprise that you've had so many guitars in different tunings. I'm impressed at how well you recognise music. I've always been able to pick out so much by ear, but never put the time to properly learn music theory (eg. name what I've heard), but watching you play has really made me excited to take this further.
Most of these riffs are just basic power chords. It doesn't really get much easier. Chug chug chug. Plus Rick is a great musician so this stuff is like child's play to him.
I swear Rick’s passion for music is just so infectious, I always find myself motivated to deconstruct whatever I’m playing after having watched his videos.
Song begins. Rick looks caught off guard by a dragon. He's like "ok, hold on, I got this". Next he's playing those killer riffs. Rick's riding the dragon.
I'm truly glad the algorithm got me on this guy, been about a year and never looked back, great break downs and man you enjoy it and don't act to cool and you cover so many different styles of tunes cheers
Except country. LOL! I may be wrong but it doesn't seem like country players get any love on here. Maybe it's just because it's such a niche type of a fanbase? It has some of the best musicians ever in it though. I'm sure Rick would agree with that.

@@seanc.5310 pop punk used to be somewhat acceptable in the 2000's. Killswitch, All That Remains, All Shall Perish, Job For A Cowboy, August Burns Red, Bullet For My Valentine, Suicide Silence etc. And then just in the height of those bands, came the emo metalcore scene which is just pure fecal matter, it never recovered. Death Metal also went from kickass riffs to cringey deathcore beatdowns and now they even call it Slam.
What I’ve noticed from all these types of videos is that a lot of songs in every genre of music have taken a very pop and electronic sound. Not my cup of tea but I guess it’s popular for a reason.
Singles have to cover as much audience ground as possible. Although here it does sound as if it’s part of these bands’ sounds not just tacked on. Not listened to metal in years so I was quite surprised!
Not really anything new; that fusion with electronic sound made industrial metal pretty darn popular (and lucrative) 25-30 years ago. You have to expect that with the heavier use of electronics in production that there's going to be even more of that sort of thing all over the place. But really, does ever second song need a piano/organ intro?
@@uberfreak9741 I'm not even sure about that. Guys from Lamb of god actually alternate pick alot and aren't really hard downpickers. For example, people seem to think Laid to Rest is all downpicked, while it is not.
Truth! Yup, he’s broken down songs that I’ve never really cared for and by the end of the video. I’ve at least liking the song maybe a little bit more and definitely have more respect for. Because of the production value and particular chords and modes that went into the song.
Rick, I love you man. Love your positivity, that you seem to be a genuinely happy person. It's always good to see. Also impressed with the speed that you can decipher songs you hear. I can do it, just not that easily. Guess doing it daily as you probably do would help.
Thanks, Rick! Your enthusiasm reminds of how my mind expanded when I became a musician. I hated everything besides metal until I picked up a guitar. Even if I don't like the song, there is probably an element of something I can appreciate or learn from. Sometimes it's just a hi-hat pattern in a rap song (they usually have the best) or the harmonic distortion in an industrial song.
What I love about Ricks videos is that he lets himself feel the music fully, doesn’t matter the genre, and finds something he loves in each one. The mannerisms and enthusiasm. It’s nice to see someone else just as hyped up about the art of music ☺️

I had the exact same impression just couldn't put it in good words like you have.
Bring back old school death metal and old school thrash metal.
Except Gojira of course.
Some of those songs were pretty tame and some nu metal-nickleback mixing. The kickass metal playlist is generally not much other than jock-jam esque pump up hard rock/metal.
This is why I love Rick's videos, he just has a fatherly quality, but your dad actually knows how to play 😅
Haha!! Cool :)
And i wish my dad was like Rick and not like he is
@@LVNIVK3V Maybe Rick is your dad
@@drdrew7475 no clearly not, my dad isn’t that good
Love these vids!
Hi
Yoooo Nik
Thanks Nik!
Hell ye Nik, see you on Twitch
Nikky, please tell Ricky
That Architects is Litty
Rick I just love the enthusiasm you have for music of all genres provided they bring something to the table with great composition and\or musical competency.
Alternate title: I have a Les Paul for every 'metal' tuning
It’s so cool see Rick vibing, no matter what the song is
He really does just seem to like it all and doesn't have anything negative to say. Not even "this isnt something i usually listen to, but.."
It's refreshing.
Unless it's pop
From Joni Mitchell to Lamb of God
@@thesmellycatjazz he listens to pop too
Its easy when he just loves music, everything music one would say.
This is fantastic. My 44 year old daughter's fiancé, Steve, plays 5 string bass in a metal band. I've been telling Steve to check you out. This should do it. I'm 73 and began playing at an early age. Music adds so much to life.
That's the takeaway here: "Music adds so much to life."
I’m astounded by the fact that at LEAST 4 of these tracks/bands are so CLEARLY influenced by Linkin Park!
Aggressively so lol
LP has influenced a large part of modern metal core and rock.
They were the blueprint for radio rock today
Yeah, that’s unfortunate… 🤦🏼♂️
@@benjamindavis4974
Because Nu-metal sucks aside from the good bands that unfortunately get lumped in with that genre:
Tool
Deftones
Rage
SOAD
This is such a fantastic video - I learned loads, am in awe of RB’s talent and now intend to download some albums from bands I’d never heard before. Rick is, quite simply, The Man.
Jesus Rick you could have walked into any rock / heavy metal band on this planet. Your understanding of music across all genres is uncanny.
I know cracks me up..
Rick “this is going to be a tricky riff to play” 1.4 seconds later “got it”
Loving the content Rick, thank you!
It's so much fun to watch Rick just enjoying the hell out of himself.
absolutely his enthusiasm is infectious very entertaining
“This riff is going to be hard to play” a second later, “ I think I got it” hahaha
Most of these riffs are just basic power chords. It doesn't really get much easier. Chug chug chug. Plus Rick is a great musician so this stuff is like child's play to him.
Really digging Rick's particularly positive vibe in this one. Rock on, man \m/
The finish on the PRS is astonishing. Cool video featuring some fantastic bands. Thanks!
"I love guitar sounds like this that sound like buzzsaws". *old school Swedish death metal has entered the chat*
Love me some old Entombed
Symphonic Post-Apocalyptic Reindeer-Grinding Christ-Abusing Extreme War Pagan Fennoscandian metal

@@woodward_alan nah, that’s Jackyl.
Check At the Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease. That’s the truest chainsaw tone.
I swear Rick’s passion for music is just so infectious, I always find myself motivated to deconstruct whatever I’m playing after having watched his videos.
I love how Rick is thrown back in his chair each time the beat comes in :D
I love that you're so open-minded with music and have fun with it all! I love your channel!
I like how Rick casually shows off his sick guitar collection during this video
Song begins. Rick looks caught off guard by a dragon. He's like "ok, hold on, I got this".
Next he's playing those killer riffs. Rick's riding the dragon.
No he’s slaying the dragon
Rick IS the Dragon!
@@jscan you're right about that lol
I'm truly glad the algorithm got me on this guy, been about a year and never looked back, great break downs and man you enjoy it and don't act to cool and you cover so many different styles of tunes cheers
It’s the enthusiasm for music that keeps me watching. It’s easy to see the unbiased genuine love of music, that is what I dig about Rick
My favorite thing about Rick Beato is how he analyzes all kinds of music.
My favourite thing about u is that ur special
unexpectedly wholesome
Except country. LOL! I may be wrong but it doesn't seem like country players get any love on here. Maybe it's just because it's such a niche type of a fanbase? It has some of the best musicians ever in it though. I'm sure Rick would agree with that.
My favorite thing is his air drumming
"If it's metal you gotta have EMGs."
Rick : *casually chugging away on soapbars*
I can't stand EMGs. They all sound too similar regardless of guitar and amp.
They're pretty necessary if you want to have good sustaining pinch harmonics, but you can get away with high output humbuckers.
You haven’t played zakk Wilde’s or Jim roots set those are literally the hottest pick ups in my honest opinion
@@allendickeson442I think you're the hottest pickup.
@@knownasweed Or you can just learn to play!
Love it Rick. Your guitars sound great. You made that rectifier sound amazing. I've never been able to dial one in for metal.
I still want to see Rick do a What Makes This Song Great on Mudvayne. Any song really, but i would love to
see his reaction to the basslines in a song like "Dig"!
Brr Brr Deeennng
Rick jamming to Lamb of God might be one of the best thing ive seen this year
watching this grown man listening to music like a kid in a candy store is heartwarming
come on we all know deep inside Rick's laughing at these "metal" bands
@@automachinehead i don't think so, his instant reaction in his facial expressions is priceless & seems to be honest joy, unlike that blank, frustrated look he gets often doing th Pop 10. That's th way I see it anyway, but I agree that its not all " metal "
@@automachinehead I actually don't think so. Beato produced tons of metal bands. He also admits one of his favorite music genres is pop punk.
@@automachinehead No, that's just you.
Awesome Rick! Thanks for this!
Seeing Rick Beato playing Gojira was awesome
What I’ve noticed from all these types of videos is that a lot of songs in every genre of music have taken a very pop and electronic sound. Not my cup of tea but I guess it’s popular for a reason.
Singles have to cover as much audience ground as possible. Although here it does sound as if it’s part of these bands’ sounds not just tacked on. Not listened to metal in years so I was quite surprised!
@@EddieVanAidan Pop and electronica are sometimes alright for metal if not overdone in songs.
Yea that first song (#10) did not sound metal at all?
@@ChristopheBeauregard electronic is okay as long as it's not overdone. Most metal bands seem to be doing it these days too.
Rick: This riff is difficult for an older guy like me
Also Rick: *Plays flawlessly*
Not flawless. Those notes were all down picked not alternate picked which is what Rick could do because it's too fast for him.
@@uberfreak9741 but he can play a lot of other genres way better, come on what a comment!...Are you kidding?!...
@@uberfreak9741 Yeah he probably should have done better considering it was his first time listening or trying to play it.....
@@uberfreak9741 I'm not even sure about that. Guys from Lamb of god actually alternate pick alot and aren't really hard downpickers. For example, people seem to think Laid to Rest is all downpicked, while it is not.
At 8:25 he could at least say, "I think I kinda get the idea" instead of "Got it!" He's flexing way too hard on us.
An honest thought: Any average song sounds better with Rick's dissection
Truth! Yup, he’s broken down songs that I’ve never really cared for and by the end of the video. I’ve at least liking the song maybe a little bit more and definitely have more respect for. Because of the production value and particular chords and modes that went into the song.
It's really great how appreciative Rick is of the craftsmanship behind music production that mere consumption of music will never teach you.
Any average song sounds better with Rick playing over it.
Rick, I love you man. Love your positivity, that you seem to be a genuinely happy person. It's always good to see.
Also impressed with the speed that you can decipher songs you hear. I can do it, just not that easily. Guess doing it daily as you probably do would help.
More top 10 metal vids! Absolutely love it!🤘
Rick's faces while listening to new music is just the best thing on UA-cam
Rick learning metal songs quicker than Nik Nocturnal confirmed
Hahah. I see a Nik Nocturnal challenge coming
Amazing how quickly Rick finds the right cords (on guitar and piano). This shows again, how good he is.
When you just played right along with Beartooth... Unreal! Loved the respect for LOG as well.
I was happy to see Epica represented and couldn't stop looking at the colour of that PRS.
No joke - what a gorgeous color!
Yup. I don't even like PRS, but that color man
Anyone know the model/finish of that PRS?? 😍
Rick's facial expressions are worth the price of admission alone.
Someone needs to make some gifs
Especially 17:04 😀 Btw I'm amazed how quickly he could play that himself! Awesome riff!
Their is a Price of Admission?
Well the price of admission is nothing, so what are you saying?.... 😏
Someone needs to condense all those reactions into one video. Memes galore
P90 gold top sounds amazing. I love these videos, really informative. Great job Rick
Everyone: You cant play metal with P-90 pickups
Rick Beato: Dont tell me what to do
More like hold my beer
P90s are quite common in a lot of metal music to be fair
"There are no rules," according to Rodney McG on Metal Bass Monday 😂

What I love about Ricks videos is that he lets himself feel the music fully, doesn’t matter the genre, and finds something he loves in each one. The mannerisms and enthusiasm. It’s nice to see someone else just as hyped up about the art of music ☺️
Great Charvel guitar. I love your drums interpretation.😊
Got me pumped this morning! Thx
Every song on Spotify should come with a video of you reacting to it! When something cool happens your body language is like a child surprised by an unexpected gift or an extra scoop of ice cream. Don’t ever change!
"Really like this song, this is very very hip." That was the most wholesome reaction to an Attila song I've ever witnessed 😂
I knew this comment was here somewhere! 🤣
WoW Your ear for music is spot on and great. Keep up all the good work. I really enjoyed the video.
Really loved this video. Rick does seem at home with whatever style that comes up. First time I stumbled upon his channel was when he analyzed cinematic musik. I do like most kinds of music but I'm mostly drawn to cinematic music and rock/metal. This man knows music. Period!
Do this every month, Rick. With metal and other genres. We, music lovers, thank you immensely
The fact that you started playing pretty much all of the songs just by ear...and listening to them once is mind blowing. That should be a series. You listening to a song that you have never heard of, trying to figure it out and also analyze it.
He didn't. Notice how his guitar is correctly tuned and has correct string count for each song. That's some miracle unless he heard the songs before.
@@TightyWhities94 i’ll say it again, my assistant Billy tunes the guitars ahead of time. The songs are simple to play. If you’re a professional musician you can figure them out in a few seconds. There is no trickery here. It’s simply intervals.
