Hands up if you miss Murray Gold. 🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ I do like Segun, but to me there's no one as Gold. One of the reasons that Doctor Who became so popular in this modern times its because his music go so well with the emotion portrayed by the actors. He really can catch and lift the scripts to something wonderful. I miss him dearly. Also, who hasn't daydreamed about been The Doctor while All The Strange Strange Creatures blasts at full volume?
I completely understand but disagree. I thought I would really miss Murray Gold, but for me Segun has been incredibly courageous in the role. Segun changes his musical style for each episode, and therefore you get some masterpieces like his Demons of the Punjab suite. They both have different styles, and I feel that Murray’s is more cinematic whilst Segun’s is more down to earth and specified. Nothing can take Murray’s brilliance away though.
Segun's songs are very pretty and thematic if you actually take the time to listen to them, but I think that's kinda the problem - You have to go out of your way to focus on them, or even really register that they're there. So far, none of his tracks really have any kind of "oomph", or any kind of recognizable melody that could instantly make you go "Oh shit, it's that song!" I like 13's theme, for instance, but it has absolutely no power or presence to it. It's a very pleasant, rolling kind of song, but it does nothing to set a scene or emphasize what the Doctor's doing. The more thematic themes are a bit better, such as the Pakistani-style music in Demons of Punjab or the little upbeat Kerblam! theme song (and its hilarious "evil" version), but I feel like a lot of the overarching themes are a bit of a let down.
You're right, of course. Segun has been really dinamic and risk taker, but personally it still doesn't grab my heart like Gold's music did. There's pieces of music that make me go "Ohhhh" like 13th theme, the demons of punjab and it takes you away, specially the last one, specially that moment where The Doctor is talking to The Solitract. I'm just waiting for the episode that will make me weep because of how wonderful the music is, like Heaven Sent did.

Modern Doctor Who was massive in the UK during Eccleston and Tennant's run. I don't think it's been an much of a phenomenon here since. From series 5, the show was made more with the fanbase and other countries who might view it in mind (hence why you might have taken to it more than series 1-4), but in doing so it never felt as big here. the music of doctor who is so special to me and has always been a huge make up for why i love it so much,, murray gold is such a huge loss from the show to me. but yeah, really loved this reaction, so much nostalgia
The Prom's are a series of (usually) classical music that happen every year in the UK and have for a very long time. It ends with the last night of the Prom's (obviously) where it's a national event.
One of the things I've loved most about watching your reactions to doctor who is seeing someone's love and appreciation for a show grow in real time. I don't think I've seen that in any other reaction series. Usually people only do it for a show that they love from the start. Yours is fascinating and genuine and I applaud you for it.
OMG what a delightful surprise, you made a good choice. :D Is it wrong for me to hope for a Never Mind the Buzzcocks reaction with Tate Cribbins and Tennant and the eternal shout out to BARROWMAN!!!!!!! ? LMAO
I loved watching the Proms, tickets were free but they were gone in no time. In 2015 I rectified this by paying for front row seats at Wembley to see the Symphonic Spectacular with some friends. Seeing Ben Foster and a massive orchestra perform Murray's themes in front of us was really special and I wasn't going to miss out again :-)
I mean.. the history of your reactions to Doctor Who are interesting because in a lotta ways I feel it probably mirrors that for a lotta people (to varying degrees, obviously), no matter when they first started watching. I first watched it as a little kid, watching random reruns of Fourth Doctor eps in the '80s. And it made little to no sense to me. It wasn't animated, but all live-action. There were no ninjas, spies, monsters, or robots (so I thought!). Most of it was just weird British adults talking to each other. I only forced myself to randomly watch it after I'd run out of all other TV I wanted to watch but didn't wanna go to bed yet. And little by little, I started getting into it, picking up on the scifi and time travel. Even after I was well into adulthood when it came back, I was overjoyed at hearing about Eccleston. I loved his performance. Then I found out halfway through Series 1 that he had left the show and I refused to watch anything new, as if my refusal to watch it would force the BBC to bring Eccleston back somehow. There's something about the show that, although I wouldn't call it a "Slow Burn" has a similar quality to it. There's definitely a deeper level of appreciation that comes from having watched at least a couple seasons and a regeneration or so, that makes you love the characters and what they've experienced and gone through. Rewatching the show is such an interesting experience. The pain you see in Nine's and Ten's faces means so much more after you've seen Day of the Doctor. Rose's significance to him makes so much sense when you realize she was the first human companion he had immediately after the Time War, the first one to remind him of all the good things that still exist, all the reasons he loved life and the universe and traveling and adventuring and helping people, that she was the one who drew him back out of the pit of self-loathing. It makes so much sense when you look at the show in its entirety and realize how, when the Doctor doesn't have human companions, how close he gets to the precipice of becoming what he dislikes and rejects most. The entire theme of always helping children, particularly in Eleven's era, has an entirely new dimension after watching the 50th. Twelve's speech at the end of Zygon Inversion means so much knowing everything the Doctor has been through.
Brian: "Scuse me, I'm looking for the supplies cupboard." Graham: "Can't help you with that mate, but who wants a cheese'n'pickle sandwich?" Wilf: "Is that slang for sumin?"
You're the first reactor I've seen who's covered the Proms. Thank you so much. David Tennant had other stuff that meant that he couldn't be there in person. I loved his "everyone has a song inside htem" - I wonder how many kids will be inspired to find their own songs? Murray Gold's music added a huge slice to the show - it probably wouldn't have been such a phenomenon if the music had been provided by a keyboard and a kazoo! It always gives me a shiver down my spine when the audience starts clapping along with the last tune; wish they could edit that in to the whole piece.
Well this is a proper nostalgia trip, teenage me is in that crowd somewhere. It was admittedly topped for me by a Symphonic Spectacular they held just before Series 9 - it was presented by the fifth Doctor, and had highlights of all the music up to that point. Capaldi was even hiding in the audience. Loved the reaction, and loving DW December!
Murray Gold's music is pure gold. He is on the same level as John Williams and John Barry, who have also had their music showcased at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. I would like to thank Murray Gold for his memorable contribution to Doctor Who and I wish him the very best for his future endeavours. 🎼💛🎶💛💿
This is fun, though I must admit my favourite arrangement of the theme was down in the first of these sorts of concerts, the Children in Need one performed in Cardiff after season 2. Love the Murray Gold.
I wasn't happy with the Doctor/Rose resolution either :-( Don't know if you are aware but Russel T Davies did create an alternative ending in an easter egg if you are interested :-)
What other TV series could sustain a concert at the Royal Albert Hall? Murray Gold is so well named. I've got the full concert, and I love it - but the bit that really gets me is when the audience starts clapping along to Song of Freedom - never fails to send a shiver up my spine. David couldn't be there in person because he had commitments elsewhere, but I loved his speech about music being in everyone; how many kids are going to take that to heart and run with it?
The feels! The nostalgia! God! This is a brilliant throwback! The music is so impactful and bold. Really powerful cues and transitions throughout. The music is also part of the reason of why I loved this era so much. It will always be my favourite. :D
This was such a great video! The proms are super nostalgic to me, especially this one. I was lucky enough to go to the 2013 Proms, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Murray Gold has inspired me to go into studying music, I'll always be grateful to the music of Doctor Who. Hope you eventually watch the 2010 and 2013 ones too! :)
The voyage is amazing, isn't it? I am enjoying watching you reflect on falling in love with the show and the special memories you have of stories and characters and music that touched you. I fell in love with Classic Who. The modern revival has just reinforced that love and deepened it. Thank you for sharing that love with us and for working so hard to bring us Doctor Who December!
The fun thing about that little short skit with the Graske and the Doctor's own music is that THAT in itself is a mini-episode. And you can find it here on UA-cam without the whole "the Proms" bit. Try it. :D It's called "Music of the Spheres".
When you see all the children with there family you realise what a great show this was with the fantastic music of Murray Gold. Hope we get this back again in the future.
This was such a treat, I never expected something like this! The music of Doctor Who is what really brings it all to another level for me, I'm a huge OST enthusiast & what Murray Gold did for this show is phenomenal.
I love Doctor Who Proms. So I was happy when I saw this video. There was, however, one similar concert before that, Doctor Who: A Celebration, back in 2006. It was for Children in Need.
I would happily watch you rewatch series 4, I loved it so much, would be cool to see you looking back now that you know way more about the doctor who universe
Honestly I think people are just glad you're seeing these pieces of Doctor Who history, regardless of whether it makes a good 'reaction' or not. Like you said yourself, being a fan of this show and getting through a large amount of it is a journey, and for those of us who were lucky enough to see all of this content when it first came out, things like The Proms or the minisodes were just as important as the main episodes themselves. Though on that note - The Adventure Games y/y?
Fun fact: Music of the Spheres is actually more real than you might imagine. Gravity waves can be read as sounds through the data they gather and who knows... the universe might even be composed of strings that vibrate and produce every element in the universe. I guess there could be a literal and metaphorical musician in all of us ;)
Considering you were worried about not having enough to react to, I thought you had a load of reaction. You’ll definitely love the 2013 proms. My son and I managed to see the 50th anniversary concert at the Sydney Opera House. Happy times and places.
This was a really nice surprise, maybe you might enjoy some the later ones even more as your favourite doctor and his companions are actually there. :)
Hiya. You probably know there are two other Proms - 2010 and 2013. You'll find 2013 in its entirety easily on UA-cam. And it's the best one, celebrating the show's 50th Anniversary, of course. You'll scream and cry and jump up and down, for sure. The 2010 Prom is impossible to find in its entirety (maybe it's just me), probably because this Prom was performed over two evenings (just to be awkward and annoying, lol) instead of the usual one. You can find the sections of it, though, across UA-cam but the total enjoyment isn't quite the same. Roll on the rest of December and all the best to you.
Now we're talking! I own most of the music from Doctor Who. Murray Gold is just phenomenal! Period. To me his music was always bigger than the show. Drawing out emotions and setting the stages to make Doctor Who even better. I am surprised he didn't write for movies instead of TV. But so very glad he did.
When I watch classic stories, I like to watch the special features as well, interviews with people working on Doctor Who at the time are very interesting.
I’m kicking myself for not going to the one in 2013 when I was back in the U.K. I’m sure you’ll get round to the later Proms shows, as it has your (and my) favourite Doctor. It’s funny thinking about your early reactions. There aren’t many shows for which I would have watched a not very enthusiastic reactor. Even more so, as I am a big Rose fan. Equally, there aren’t many reactors I would have watched struggling through a couple of series of some of my favourite tv. So this is a brief thank you Jess, it’s been a fun journey!
You'd love the 2013 doctor who proms that one covers Matt Smith's tenure also that's the one which celebrates the 50th anniversary if I remember rightly.
Great reaction. I don't hold you not liking Rose against you. I like the character but she can be a bit much sometimes. Rose used to be my favorite companion before Donna. I've come to appreciate Martha over time. I respect how she ended things with the Doctor on her terms. Often, his companions are left behind instead of doing the leaving. I hope Doctor Who At The Proms 2013 is among the videos for Doctor Who December. You would definitely enjoy that one. "I need at least a half hour dedicated to Wilf" Damn right.

The Prom's are a series of (usually) classical music that happen every year in the UK and have for a very long time. It ends with the last night of the Prom's (obviously) where it's a national event.
If you surprise us with a Torchwood reaction you'll have made my December ❤️
(I know you might not get to them till later but I think you'll love it!)
Is it wrong for me to hope for a Never Mind the Buzzcocks reaction with Tate Cribbins and Tennant and the eternal shout out to BARROWMAN!!!!!!! ?
Hi if you want more Wilfred Mott try Reacting to Some of Bernard Cribbins old songs start with "right said fred"
He was also in a Space 1999 episode, Brian the Brain. Where he played a berserk, emotional robot, and it's creator, whom it had killed.

🎵 All the strange creatures 🎵
If you go back and watch "Twice Upon a Time" you'll notice that alot of these songs play throughout the course of the episode
Tunes!
The journey's been fun so far. Twelve shoulda done something with Wilf.
I really want Wilf, Rory's dad Brian and Graham to meet in a bar somwehere. That is my ultimate fanfic dream.
Brian: "Scuse me, I'm looking for the supplies cupboard."
Graham: "Can't help you with that mate, but who wants a cheese'n'pickle sandwich?"
Wilf: "Is that slang for sumin?"
@@anealingfeeling5356 yes!!!
React to all of the proms! They're so good :D
Donna has been and will always be; my favourite companion.
I was here for this concert yay and a few of the others. Literally some of the best times of my life
Murray Gold's music is pure gold.
Loved this choice of reaction, got a feeling you'll enjoy the 2010 version!
I totally overlooked the title saying 2008. I was looking forward to your reaction to the 2010 Proms. Still a lovely nostalgic reminisce, though.
I finally figured out how to pronounce Martha's name
Daniel Dunlap Me too. It's a good thing to hear her say her name. I've been watching "New Amsterdam" and still didn't know until now. :)
@Daniel Dunlap. Why is it difficult to pronounce Martha?
@@gaynor1721 the actress playing Martha's name
The feels! The nostalgia! God! This is a brilliant throwback! The music is so impactful and bold. Really powerful cues and transitions throughout. The music is also part of the reason of why I loved this era so much. It will always be my favourite. :D
Thanks Miss! Been watching you since before you even started Doctor Who! So PROUD of you!
OH MY GOD! Thank you SO much for reacting to this, Jess. LOVED LOVED LOVED IT.
One thing series 11 is really lacking is the music.
Try it. :D
It's called "Music of the Spheres".
You must check out the 50th anniversary proms in 2013 - really special.
Love the little jaunt down memory lane. Of course, you have to watch another proms now, so you can hear some 11 and 12 music!
I would happily watch you rewatch series 4, I loved it so much, would be cool to see you looking back now that you know way more about the doctor who universe
Oh, the later ones that have both Vale decem and I am the Doctor are spectacular! Murray Gold is an absolute genius.
The galifrey music is brilliant along with the ninth doctor’s theme.
There were proms with Matt Smith
I know what you mean about Martha leaving. Not every companion leaves for better and brighter things, she did, she got lucky!
COME BACK MURRAY!!! Segun is alright but dammit Murray was Who.
I remember hearing this live on the radio for the first time in Strapford, the day before seeing Tennant in the flesh. A great weekend.
JSA before Torchwood Torchwood is coming after finished DW but all caught up now. so maaaaybe it may feature in DWDecember...Maaaaybeee
The one with Matt Smith after the season 7 break was awesome! I loved it, plus "I am the Doctor" is a masterpiece!...
I LOVED IT ! I hope there is a reaction to Doctor regeneratitons live
When I got a notification I felt my heart stop beating for a second. WAIT! WHAT? your wearing your tardis jumper. Hell yeah!!
It is the first Doctor Who Prom, but they did a concert in 2006.
i havew been so wanting to see you react to these dovtor proms for like ever i think i even asked you to back when you first started reacting to doc who
I'm so glad you've shown this, it's brilliant
John Barrowman is absolutely killing it in I’m A Celebrity this year!
Mr. Tea He needs to tell his fans to watch DW instead of I'm a Celebrity Keep Me Relevant Sunday night. :-P
seen one of these concerts in melbourne australia with peter davidson hosting-brilliant
I was there!
Freema's hot as hell. The affection for Catherine was palpable. And you kind of had to be there for Music of the Spheres.
Been watching since series 1, had to stay around to see how you'd find series 3 - my favourite series too (besides the final episode) and with my favourite companion!
I feel Sesskasays would be someone who would enjoy video game music
what a terrific concert!
14:07 Gallifrey
I went to Doctor Who Live in Sheffield, where they played the music, but with a plot.
Your running commentary is highly entertaining. :D I'm with you on needing more Donna in there. She's the best. :)
I don't know if you've planned on watching the 2010 and 2013 Proms, but they're worth a watch.
Excellent! Brilliant! Fantastic! Allons-y! Geronimo!
the endless daleks night is one of the best doctor who ever played
