RV Owners Beware - Check Your RV Air Conditioner IMMEDIATELY

  • Today our RV air conditioner stopped working and the reason will surprise you. In fact, we found the same fault in both of our AC units. Every RV owner is susceptible to this happening.
Our RV air conditioner has been spitting ice on us, running roughly, and not blowing air out the vents. We found the culprit and were in for a much bigger surprise that we have been overlooking for the longest time.
Please check your RV air conditioner immediately, this can save you from malfunctions and hot temperatures in the upcoming summer months.

We installed the RV Airflow system in our Living room AC/Heat Pump (we have a 2930RL as well). It definitely made a difference in the airflow coming out of the vents. We opted to not install the RV Airflow in the bedroom because there are times when we want to cool off the bedroom quickly (like when running on our Honda 2200 generator or our solar/inverter system) and don't need to cool the whole camper (like when doing a Harvest Host in a hot area).
Thanks for the AC tips! Also it is important to use that tape to seal any gaps that might be open to the attic in the AC area. Also seal the plastic inserts (if there are any open seams) in the plenum openings.
I would say go for the DIY version of the RV airflow - we purchased the real thing - it is very well designed and easy to install ... would have saved $$$ doing the DIY one though.

Who needs AC when you guys have so much “cool” love for each other 😬 I’m finally getting my RV in about 3 weeks and hitting the road for full-time RV living. Starting in Maine (since I’m from NY) and then working my way south/west. Hope to meet you guys on the road one day. @@HappilyEverHanks Thanks so much! Last October I was in a near death motorcycle accident where a truck ran me down and I suffered 10 broken ribs, broken foot, broken hand and shattered leg. At 51 years old it was a truly difficult recovery and I’m 80% there, but at least I’m out of the wheelchair now and can go live life. I’m so excited and can’t wait. But I’m being 100% honest that I’ve been watching you for a while now and it’s because of you and your adventures that I’m deciding on full- time RV living, so THANK YOU guys! Hope to meet one day and thank you in person! Much love and stay safe!

I went to turn my AC from low to high, but turned it toward the fan so I quickly turned the other way past low right to high and it blew out completely.
This is really bad b/c I know it's going to be hot tomorrow. I doubt, but I'm hoping there's a fuse in the fuse box that says "AC" and it blew. Then I just need to do that. But I don't think I'm going to be that fortunate

I love to see you both hit your RV issues head on. You are both so handy and fearless, it’s very entertaining, as well as informational to watch. Hey Guys, Your first upgrade for your AC'S should be micro air soft starts. They are not hard to install and help the compressor start easier. They are not the cheapest thing but worth every penny. Second thing is the RV Airflow system we are in Quartzsite Az used them last year at 118 degrees froze my wife out.

Generally the foam holds that baffle in just fine, but obviously if they put the separator plate in backwards it was actually trying intake through those tiny vent holes on the cover and sucked the baffle in. I build rvs and have installed these many times, I've diagnosed a lot of them, they cam be tricky. Great job figuring it out!

We purchased an RV Airflow for our single Coleman Mach 8 AC, which does away with the baffle entirely and allows 100% of your air inlets to be used. It makes the dump vents useless, but increases airflow to the ceiling vents by 40% or more. Expensive little piece of styrofoam, but it works exactly as advertised.

Like Carl says, you need to start your A/C early in the day. According to HVAC technicians, RV A/C units are designed to only cool 20 degrees less. For Example, if you wait to start your A/C when the temp is 100, it will slowly only cool down to 80 during the cooling process. The colder the room gets, the 20 degrees will eventually go down, but it will take longer. One hack for people living in hot climates, is to buy a $500 stand alone room air conditioner that’s vents in/out the window. They run off of 120v and at night time they are 2-3 times quieter than roof A/Cs. In addition, IF your A/C unit goes out you have a backup. We know all this from living in our RV in south central Texas during July-September. 🥵🤬

Hello! We (meaning my husband, as I was the assistant) put in the Styrofoam insert, as Chad suggested and it was Super Easy to install and made a HUGE difference. Especially if you can only run one A/C on 30 amp. Once it was installed, it has so much more power that it pushes the air through race track and back to the bedroom. Fit super tight and such a great product. We are also very thrifty people, but this was worth the money! We also put HEPA filters on top of the provided screen to help filter out our air. Dexter would approve. :) You can make them for a fraction of the price if you just buy the roll of it and use a marker and cut out your own pieces. Pre-cut ones are insane for the price. Our helpful tip of the day! You are both so super entertaining and just fun to watch, with a bonus of some good info. We don't comment much, but we always look forward to your next video. Nice DIY analyzation & fix ! I'm a fix it type guy and will dig into stuff. UA-cam has brought me up to a new level though. If I take it apart ; I can put it back, but if it's installed wrong to begin with & not clearly evident, it an be difficult to correctly access the problem. Again 👍 to the both of y'all.

When putting screws back into an existing hole, turn it backwards slowly till you feel it seat and then screw it in. That way you do not, over time, strip out the hole.

    RV Airflow is worth it!
We got an RV airflow for the main AC and it made such a difference we ended up getting them for the other ACs since our bedroom dump vent blows directly on the thermostat when then shuts off the AC. Using a BT-100 Anemometer, the overall airflow (with just the living room AC) increased 33.7% on high and 30.2% on low. The four celing vents closest to the AC increased over 41%.
For military folks they do offer a discount code if you contact them and ask along with a number of affiliate codes floating around.

Go to a hobby store or hardware store and pick up a small magnet. Rub the screwdriver tip and bit with the magnet and the screwdriver should become magnetized or take some of your AC tape and tape a small magnet to the screwdriver. That will help as well.

This just popped up on my news feed. Is there a difference between tin foil and aluminum foil?
There is, in fact, a difference between tin foil and aluminum foil. Tin foil came first and was, well, made from tin. It was used mostly as packaging, wrapping up gum, and even lining cigarette packs. However, there was a downside to it. Because it was made from tin, it left a metallic taste behind on food and the other, edible items it was storing.
Aluminum foil began popping up around 1926 when the United States Foil Company began to mass-produce it. That company would go on to become Reynolds Metals a.k.a the inventors of Reynolds Wrap.Unlike tin foil, aluminum didn’t leave behind a taste on food because it was made from aluminum which made it non-corrosive. Its popularity also skyrocketed because not only did it interact better with food, but it was also lightweight and easier to produce. So, yes, while it might seem obvious, the biggest difference between tin and aluminum foil is the material they’re made from. When people use the names interchangeably, it’s likely just a habit from older family members, not necessarily a belief that the products are the same.
The next time you’re planning a foil-cooked meal but sending someone else out for applies, be sure to tell them you need aluminum, not tin, foil. Lol so I hope this helps

the baffle is upside down. The foam edge should be against the bottom of the A/C unit. This comes from the Coleman/mac ac guys. And a few years at Winnebago Ind, parent company of Grand Designs. So yeah, tape was a good idea, but they installed em WRONG from the factory

I did the diy rebuild and it drastically improved the air flow thru out the rv…it WILL void the dump vents, and to me that’s not a bad thing. Like you guys my rig was not cooling down due to lack of airflow…the baffle was laying over and mixing the return and supply giving us the swampy humid feel…best $25 parts and 2 hours spent on my rig thus far.
Glad you guys figured it out. As a refrigeration tech, I can say without a doubt, how many people avoid or just do not KNOW about ensuring the cleanliness of the condenser coils and clean air filters. Clean condenser coils help in REMOVING heat from within the refrigeration lines.

What I also found was when removing and checking each vent, they did not go up into the air vent raceway far enough to actually stop the air from leaking and going into the ceiling. I used the tape to extend the event into the air vent raceway duct work sealing off the ceiling cavity and it improved my air flow by about 50%. Now all the air comes out of the vents as it should.
