  • *This was 10Mhz not 12Mhz, I typed the wrong number on the video
    This is from a model 2 Genesis / Megadrive that was overclocked using a 10mhz osc. Not sure how noticeable it is in the video, however playing the games, there is a difference. This was done with a Model 2 so the video quality isn't the best, but my model 1 is having some issues. Probably have a video up on that soon.

    It´s great to have reference material to just see the difference. I might consider trying this for my model 1 if I ever revive my dead backup unit. Thanks for the work!

      Thanks for the kind words. The difference is more noticeable by playing it. Just seems so much more fluid. Also this was on a model 2, my model 1 refused to overclock. Just got it working 5 minutes ago, turns out the ram was either bad or pushed to its limits. Swapped it out and works great now.

    It makes you wonder why SEGA didn't just come out with a 20MHz 68000 and 12MHz Z80 based system, instead of the expensive 32X addon. The System 16-based console was designed for 128KB of VRAM, could allow a higher color, higher resolution mode in the VDP for new games, and up to 2MB of RAM. Heck, they could've even added the famous SVP right to the board and gotten around the Game Genie patent that prevented the $49.99 3D that they'd designed.

      Sega CD has a 12.5Mhz 68000. Jaguar XJ220 was scaled all on the add-on CPU, not by the scaling ASIC. Not sure how much RAM it needed, but if you cut down the number of road side signs / trees etc maybe stock Genesis could do it or with an overclock/swap.
      Mega drive / Genesis can be modded with 128K VRAM but the banks are interleaved so it has to be programmed for that to work. So homebrew could use the mod, or if ROM hackers can change the retail games to use it.
      I would be happy if SEGA had just made the Genesis with the specs of the SEGA System C2. 4096 color palette instead of 512, more Color RAM for more 15-color palettes to use in backgrounds and sprites. No Z80 or Master System backward compatibility.

      @@NoSpamForYou And the 10MHz 68000 of the C2 could also drive the CD-ROM, something that could've been included from Day 1.

    Are the overclock glitches that happen hardware or software?

      Software code glitches in the hardware.

      Basically when a component is pushed past its designed clock speed it can glitch and corrupt the datastream. Think of a scratched cd.

    you need software that uses and is designed for 12 MHz. because most programs are timed for a normal processor...and finish their calculations before starting a new frame....the remaining 68000 CPU time will just wait for a new frame =) (thanks for video) Also interesting experiments on replacing 68000 with 68010 where there is a cache for dbra cycles :)

    Outrun would be good to try out
