  • After spending the night at an extraordinarily quiet Oban Holiday Park, I ride back to the town of Oban and catch the ferry over to Craignure, on the Isle of Mull.
    Later I head west across Mull, towards the tiny village of Fionnphort.

    Note to all Americans:
    There is an historical reason for driving on the left; it’s all to do with keeping your sword hand free!
    In the Middle Ages you never knew who you were going to meet when travelling on horseback. Most people are right-handed, so if a stranger passed by on the right of you, your right hand would be free to use your sword if required.

    I am right in the middle of watching yet another wonderful video, I wanted to comment about health and safety killing the joy, they definitely come through the video that it is a stark difference from 95% of what you seem to be experiencing there which is quietness, friendly people and beauty. Here in the United States I cannot imagine how we would react to such foolishness, I live in a state where it is legal to carry concealed firearms without a permit and it is one of the safest states to live in, I don’t have a working lock on the door of my house And although I don’t personally carry a firearm I feel it’s nice to know that because you assume everybody else could have won that it’s rare anything bad happens here, that type of health and safety here would be like a kindergarten class being led around the village with everyone holding onto a rope
    I am 56 as well and have survived without anyone holding my hand either, I love your common sense Kevin, I love your videos and your attitude is one that brings joy to people and thank you for that

    I was looking forward to this instalment - the first time I have "been" on the ferry - if only virtually - from Oban to Craignure since a family holiday in 1972, when my father had the strange idea of leaving the car in Oban, and going for a cruise to Mull and back. We wandered vaguely around Craignure (the weather was fine, as here) and took the next ferry back. Islay is pronounced "eye-lah" BTW. You have to know that when amongst whisky-quaffing folk or you get laughed at.

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Місяць тому +1

      Cheers for that, there's so many distinct pronunciations for Scottish place names, I don't think I'll ever get one 100% correct. 😁 Yes Craignure is a quaint spot but not somewhere you'd want to wait hours and hours for a ferry back.

    So beautiful there Kev. I was sitting on the loo at North Ledaig Caravan park, just past Oban Airport, (Connel Airfield at the time,) when the relative silence was rent asunder by the almighty roar of a supercharged, 37lt V12 Rolls Royce Griffon engine, as it made a full throttle low pass over the airfield and caravan park. I nipped it short (wiped) and ran out with my shorts still on the way up to see a Spitfire pulling up into a vertical climb at the far end of the field. It came to land so I went over for a closer look. Turned out to be a Navy spec mk lV. on its way to an airshow somewhere in Europe. Ill never forget that. A rare treat indeed!

    I stayed in a cottage a couple of miles short of Fionnphort on the road you're travelling in this video a little while before Lockdown. (Just looked it up, Easter week 2018, It's pronounced Finnifort btw). We went to Iona and Staffa during the week. A magical holiday. Great to relive it through your video. I remember buying coffee and sandwiches at the shop at Craignure while we waited for the ferry back to Oban. We bought a couple of bottles of Tobermory 10yr old on a day trip to the distillery(welll the town really) to bring home, but they didn't make it out of the cottage!

    Hello Kevin, if I could I believe I would spend time at each location. Such a beautiful place. The water is such a lovely shade of blue. Each time you come upon a puddle I can't help but wonder what type of fish it may have. I can't wait to see what adventures you bring us along next week. Thank you Kevin such a lovely place Scotland.

    I've travelled on Calmac for the past 40 years and recently noticed the increasing self importance of their deck staff. For a company presently in disarray it doesn't bode well. I feel sorry for the islanders who depend on its "services".

    Hi Kevin, The countryside looked very dry. Looks like some of that rain you mentioned was badly needed. I have to agree with you - Health & Safety is a killjoy. When living in Brisbane back in the 1990s, several very popular small festivals were killed off because of H & S and the required insurances, much to the detriment of the cultural life of the city. Had to laugh at your ‘puddles’! Looking forward to seeing the next episode. Cheers.
