Michigan fan here just wanted to say you guys are very insightful and put on a great show. Penn State are luckily to have this content available to them! Good luck to you guys the rest of the year
Good luck to your wolverines, you have a very solid, physical squad. Defense is legit and your ground game, mccarthy is the guy that CAN make the throw, just has to stay out of his own way.
First off, you all put on a great show and had me laughing at some of the funny things that you had to say. I'm a Michigan fan and this was the first time I had watched you guys and I watched this video like 3 times because I liked it so much.
I subed even though I am a Michigan fan because of the pure respect and knowledge you guys show in this video. Also I am at heart a Big 10 fan no matter what. As long as you are not playing Michigan I am rooting for you. The better the big Ten looks the more kids want to come play in the cold and that's important.
I always like good insightful honest sport talk. I am a Michigan but not one of those fan that can’t have a realistic conversation weather win or lose and that is the vibe i get from you guys yes you are true PENN STATE fans but I love the honesty and as a michigan fan i had a lot of let down seasons so I’m not here to bash you guys but I really enjoy you guys show keep it up.. see you guys next year and you guys kicked our ass a few times lol so I’m sure sooner or later yall will return the favor!
Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already as we cover all college football and especially the big ten. I agree it’s part of being a great conference always gotta being your A game! Hopefully we’re more competitive next year! Thanks again for watching.
Michigan fan here, tough game for you all. There were some highlights for PSU, you all have a very young backfield, and a decent secondary. Good luck for the rest of the season fellas!!!
The thing I would say is, a lot of PSU folks were citing games like Maryland and Indiana, and even Iowa as a reason PSU had a chance here. But like, Michigan was never in danger in any of those games. Like Maryland was only a 7 point win because they tacked on a meaningless TD at the end. Iowa was never in doubt and was again a fairly meaningless TD just to get to 10 points. Indiana was a 3 TD victory. And then PSU folks ignored beating Purdue by 3 and only beating NW, maybe the worst team in the conference, by 10. Like once that NW game happened, I frankly never thought PSU had a chance to win on the road against Michigan.
I agree. Also, the Central Michigan game exposed alot of Penn State's weaknesses. Central Michigan was moving the ball on Penn State and controlling the line of scrimmage. Central Michigan had two TD's called back and 4 turnovers. Penn State was lucky in that game and did not dominate.
You guys are honest and have some insight that may be painful but again, its honest. Most fans and a lot of media pundits never self-reflect on the issues that define why their own team underachieves. You guys don't seem to be that type. But you still are in the fox hole with your team. Takes character to do that.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! We cover more than just Penn State Football. Great win for you guys hopefully you make the big ten proud!
Micigan had about 20 high school studs visiting this weekend and in attendance for this game. Thanks, PSU! McCarthy and Edwards are five-star guys and they were great today. Corum was a four-star recruit who went into the weight room and came out as a running back who could run inside the tackles and still be shifty and speedy enough to make it to the end zone on any given play. He willed himself to be great, and Michigan is lucky to have a young man of his character. Harbaugh looks like a nerd with his Woody Hayes glasses, but he has always been a genius designing a running game, which starts with lots of complex O-line blocking schemes. Those schemes require a lot of coaching and practice time, and a willingness to rely on the run game in an era when lots of teams spend all their time planning and practicing the pass game fans love so much due to the higher scores and more offensive excitement (the game gets stretched out due to clock-stopping incomplete passes and clock-stopping completions which yield first downs). You talked about the Maryland, Indiana, and Iowa games as if they showed Michigan to be something less than an elite team. Michigan crushed all three of those teams and was never in jeapardy of losing any of them. Just as in this PSU game, the final scores were not in the least indicative of the one-sided nature of those three games. Michigan ran the ball. The game clock sped down to 0:00 before Michigan could score sixty points. Being two or three scores up early in the 4th Quarter was a completely insurmountable lead rather than a sign that the games were ever close. I'm on record as predicting a Michigan win by a 41-10 final score. I missed the goofy pick 6 and/or the long Clifford run. That was a great fake hand-off by Clifford, one of the rare times both the cameraman and the announcers were completely fooled. Please have your boys get their shit together and beat MSU by 49 points.
JJ did not play great lol. He was worst player on field for Michigan 145 yards 0 TD a d 1 pick no thanks. He needs to step up to his 5 star status and show he special.
Michigan guy here , like the show just subbed . But honestly Franklin reminds me of Harbaugh. Can recruit wel and build out a talented team. But there’s always self inflicted wounds . Sometimes it’s in game quirks , sometimes lack of preparedness . Especially on the road at ranked teams . I think that’s why we have pretty much traded blowout wins for the home team the last several years …until Covid . Jimmy SEEMS to have figured it out a little bit this last year and a half . We will see . But I like pen state and have always saw them very similar to us . Hope y’all can regroup and show up tough every game. For your sake and ours 😅 Definitely have some Ballers on your squad though
Michigan fan here. First time listening. Great show. Harbaugh struggled until he got better coaching staff. Both in recruiting and development. From a Michigan fan looking in from the outside, Franklin is stealing any money he gets from coaching Penn St.
That's not true. You can do all the coaching you want but if the players don't play you can't blame that on coaching. One of harbaugh's best coaching seasons was the year he lost three quarterbacks and won eight games there are games where Michigan could have closed out but the offensive lineman did not play they couldn't run the ball to close our games this Michigan team just like last year's Michigan team has taken on the identity of their coach we've had better receivers we've had better defensive players but the difference is none of those teams were tougher than this team and last year's team we would watch Michigan receivers get blasted against Ohio State and would not catch a ball the rest of the year or rather the rest of the game these receivers get knocked down get back up talk smack to the defense and then catch the next bar that's toughness
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! We cover more than just Penn State, what do you think our options are at PSU. We owe him $70m so we can’t really fire him.
Michigan fan here. Penn State is a solid, respectable team. Michigan is Great! Harbaugh is a genius and he's finally figured out college football. He's like the strange kid in the class who you think has something wrong with him that turns out to be extraordinarily brilliant.
Penn State’s weakness at linebacker was fully exposed today. It was cleverly disguised by other teams unable to exploit it. Michigan did take perfect advantage of it. Even average linebacker play stalls a couple of the 1st half drives before scoring position. Remember you are never as good as you look when you nor as bad you look when you lose (Rutgers and Vanderbilt excepted). Equally an issue is the Penn State offense which cannot open holes (not a Michigan thing), has a QB that mostly lacks accuracy mid to deeper passes (not a Michigan thing), has receivers lacking ability to gain separation regardless of opponent (not a Michigan thing), and bewildering play call each game (not a Michigan thing). Michigan is definitely a playoff team and exploited some serious weaknesses today. And of course the tired defense allowed the big runs. In the first half the defense bent but did not break despite the crappy linebacker play. Penn State knows this was an issue after getting beat out for some LB recruits in recent years. Great game plan and execution to wear out Penn State who has a very challenged offense until they first fix the OL
Top to bottom as a PSU fan I think ..his classless comment about the lines he recruiteed being" undersized".....think He and his entire coaching staff are clearly "undersized"!! Sadly this organization needs a whole lot more from a 7.5million $ coach who can recruit well but with an abysmal record against good teams!!
As a Michigan fan I can say I’m not sure either. I looked at the 247 talent rankings and UM and PSU are basically equal in recruiting talent. But Michigan completely dominated today to my surprise. Seems like UM is just elite on the lines. Starts there. And low class move on Franklin seemingly throwing his line players under the bus after the game. 🍻
Recruiting is important, recruiting rankings are NOT! In the 90s Barry Alvarez won 3 Rose Bowls and never, never, ever had a single top 20 recruiting class.
@@Penn_State_Nittany_No_Huddle Michigan offensive line since Jim harbaugh has gotten there has never performed but the main reason was a lot of those guys never had the chance to develop people tend to forget that when Lloyd car retired Rich rod came in ran off a bunch of offensive linemen and start recruiting those small guys and they have been rebuilding ever since last year was the first year where Michigan's offensive line has been able to close out games against elite teams we would have beaten Ohio State 4 years ago if the offensive line could have closed out the game where we got robbed on the run play and perhaps the next year
@@jamesbowen8960 you are right what Wisconsin did was they would recruit an offensive lineman just like what Michigan used to do unless he was a special offensive lineman he would spend his first year on red shirt and inside the weight room and then by his junior year he will be either a starter or getting significant plan time and that's how you were able to rotate and rebuild your offensive line every year Michigan got in trouble when they had to play young guys before they were ready
In regards to the oline it took Ed Warinners ability to scout talent and then Moores ability to simplify a scheme to maximize their potential. Warrinner scouted and helped recruit most of the line that's playing right now. They were mostly all mid to high 4 star guys. Moore has done a good job so far coaching them up. Olu is a beast and UM was very lucky to get him from the portal.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! We cover a lot of college football not just Penn state. As far as the OL Michigan has a lot of experience there as well two 5th year seniors, two rs jrs, one true Jr. makes a world of difference!
Well done. Honest sincere analysis and evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. Plus some built in timely humor. I’d add - college games often unstable. Purdue a very good team and Auburn physical and athletic. You cannot beat them without being good. To me, Coach Deven - football a little like tennis. A lot of plays with 11 players. Being just a bit better adds up. And if that’s in the wrong place it adds up fast. You will be favored in every game except OSU. EFFORT will matter. Take out MN by 10+ and your 1:3 v OSU. I expect you will be 10-2. Purdue is very good. That Syracuse loss was just a give away and they are 6-0.
Michigan fan here, just subbed. You don't hear this kind of grounded and level-headed analysis too often in the CFB-sphere. I think PSU finishes 10-2... aint no way yall lose to Minny in the white out; Maryland isn't a pushover but c'mon. TCB
One of the biggest changes Michigan made last year was in instituting the Baltimore Raven defensive scheme. It made their defense a lot more unpredictable where they don't have to blitz as much with the complex up front rushing schemes they use. Allows more guys back in coverage resulting in tighter passing lanes. Also the adjustment in putting the spy on the QB situationally shut down that QB running game for Penn State. It was nice in game coaching.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already, as we cover more than just Penn State Football. I agree with almost all your points great coaching!
UM fan. We are seeing a surprise in some guys we didn't expect to be as good as they are . Mike Sanristil was a good WR turned DB . He is exceeding everyone's expectations. So some times it Forrest Gump. " Life is like a box of chocolates "
I told yall PSU fans but yall didnt want to listen. I was respectful and said that PSU is a proud tradition filled program with talented athletes and also said MICHIGAN would roll PSU. MICHIGAN is on another level, most people dont really understand how dominant MICHIGAN is!! RUN WALL RUN THE BALL WE BULLY THE BULLIES!! GO BLUE
4:20 we threw a pick 6 and had 3 field goals in the red zone. It was not our A game lol the score could have been a lot worse!!! Another thing I want to point out is going into the year Corum and Edwards were more of a 1a 1b type rotation until Edwards got hurt. He was a borderline 5 star who can pretty much do it all even line up in the slot and run routes or throw a 75 yard dime in the big ten championship game lol. So don't feel to bad about him being a "backup", he's clearly next in line to the throne here at RBU.
Penn State team is a good team. Michigan has a lot of multi-dimensional weaponry. Harbaugh, and his staff has a ton of Pro-level talent in coaching compared to PS coaching and is a huge factor in player development. The portal is a wild card mix that can be a big program setback (Ref- MSU who is way overrated) . You need to really get into the X’s and O’s of this game (and I have) to see all of the mismatches on the field during this game. There was no chance for PS. Ohio state will be tough for Michigan on the road….coming from a U of M Grad. Sorry for your pain, guys. My wife and I travelled to Tallahassee , FL last weekend (visited our son who is an FSU student) to watch Clemson ….speed kills. D1 players are not “bad”: it’s all relative. Thanks for the video.
As a Michigan fan, I feel for Penn State. This season, PSU played against a really good Michigan team that’s strong, fast and quick. Missing that 4th down in 3rd quarter changed the game because RB Corum made that big TD run. I think PSU will win the rest of the games except Ohio State. And I think PSU matches up better and will keep that game close.
Michigan fan here. I really think its our offensive line. It's really good. Our defense believe it or not is probably better then last year. You take those 2 long runs away it would've been a different ball game. Your coach is elite don't worry about your coach.
Until last year UM was in the same boat. Getting blasted by OSU every year. Losing to MSU regularly. 2-4 during the covid year. Their talent level and schemes on both sides of the ball have greatly improved. They lost key coaching coordinators and have success in replacing them. Getting rid of Don Brown helped a lot because a good team figured his defense out and the big plays don't happen as much. It was all or nothing with him. Getting back to running the ball and not being afraid to pass on first down if it was there. Harbaugh quit being stubborn and adapted to the new style being played now. Watch out for Illinois. They're a comer. Michigan will have a real problem with them.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already. I agree with a lot of what you said! We will see if Franklin can maybe turn the corner but I’m not holding my breathe!
This is all crazy. I'm a Michigan fan for 35 years. I can remember just a few Yeats ago they were talking about Michigan only winning once or twice in 10-15 games against Penn St. It's just the ebb and flow of college football. Penn St is going to be Ok. Michigan still has a lot to work on including red zone offense, throwing deep in the passing game, and play calling. They never target one on one passes deep. It's gonna be ok in Happy Valley.
I have no idea why this played on my auto feed a year(s) later but it was hilarious and delicious. Being the perpetual 2nd or 3rd place redheaded step child in the BIG could actually make the little lions a fun and relevant football team now. Beating a couple west coast sugar coated fancy pants west coast schools and losing to Michigan and or Ohio should get you into the playoffs every year now. Penn state in the 12 to 9 spot at the end of the regular season is a real good spot. Penn state at any given playoff day could sting someone in the first round.
Another Michigan fan here…..yes, Michigan rolled PSU this past weekend but take heart in this - we go on a Big Ten road trip almost every year so I say this with a wide perspective. PSU has everything to win big….great campus, great tradition, great game day environment, great recruiting and great great class act fans. I am NOT an expert on all things PSU football but this is the opinion from this side of things - we are happy Franklin is at PSU. I know he just got an large contract extension….that is a problem for all of you. How can PSU have all these great these things and come up with games like that?……and this weekend was just another example.
Michigan fan here. When PSU comes to Michigan, I've always founds they're the most decent visiting fans (I've been a season ticketholder for years). Tough day for you all, but Penn State is a great school with a great FB tradition. If I had anything to add to this thread, it would be -- maybe your coach needs to spend less time with the press and more time with actual FB. Disguised Manning, being a fav of the ESPN etc. Last Monday Harbaugh's presser was an NFL type of approach to the press before a big game; a 14 minute, complete minimalist, don't-ask-me-stupid-questions approach, i.e., Belichick style. Meanwhile, your coached droned on and on for 35 minutes, acting professorial and feigning erudition. As a Michigan fan, he seems insufferable, as PSU fan, I don't know how you live with it. Our Jimmy has his eccentricities; no doubt, he's got his quirks. But he wins, and when he doesn't, he adapts. Your Jimmy, well... the evidence seems overwhelming when the data of results in the most important games is analyzed. As they say about the players, it ain't about the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmys and Joes... or in this case, the Jimmys and Jimmys.
Teams who are usually good that suck this year: Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan State Games OSU thinks were “Statement Wins”: Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan State Penn state is in a great position to expose OSU
@ Kyle Tauzer Excellent analysis and spot on insight. You're the only person that has posted this and I give you big-time props for that. Penn State has a golden opportunity to hammer the Buckeyes and expose them. Don't waste it!
Yeah beating a 3-3 ND team that lost to Marshall and a bad Stanford squad isn't exactly a statement win. Wisconsin literally doesn't have a passing offense. MSU has probably the worst secondary in Division 1.
He should have got rid of Don Brown earlier Don Brown was incapable of adapting you can't play Man coverage against guys who run sub 4 speed. And you can't win if your defensive coordinator refuse to play some type of zone
Good show. So PSU's coaches had 2 weeks to come up with that game plan. PSU ran to the weak side multiple times, while the 2 best players on Michigan's d-line lined up on that side. I was scratching my head. Especially since it was to the offenses right, which is where in many peoples opinions the PSU's offensive lines weak link is. It was almost like they were trying to outsmart themselves. It made no sense. I had the privilege of watching Nick Singleton play in High School albeit as an opposing fan. Gov Mifflin would toss him the ball to get him at full speed on the edge. He is maximized in space. I was happy to see the fake hand off route he ran, (but dropped) as he was used as a WR also in high school. But I don't feel they are putting him in the greatest positions to succeed. You need to get your most explosive talent in space with the ball. Then defensively I was worried about the LB spot. I felt the MLB looked a step slow in other games and then Sutherland was a poor tackling safety, how would he be any better as an undersized LB. He is not a good LB. Then players were pushed around and the LBers filled the wrong gaps, which allowed gaping holes for Michigan to run through. I posted after the second play, Penn State looked like they had no emotion, Michigan came to play. Even after the pick 6 and momentum sort of swayed to PSU's side they didn't seem to really be fired up. it was just a poor effort all the way around.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe! I agree with almost al your points. I think getting singleton into space is crucial but we need our OLine to get to the edge too.
As a Michigan fan, I find that Michigan and Penn State are similar programs, but the difference is Michigan learned from their mistakes playing Penn State with Saquon Barkley and Michigan State with the way they played bully ball against them over the years. They also learned their identity last year versus Ohio State. Whereas, Penn State is still in the process of still figuring out their strengths. Also, the Penn State coaching staff really needs to step it up when it comes to player development especially him the offensive and defensive lines.
This is not the first team Harbaugh has put together, Stanford, he turned them into a very good team. The 49s he took to the Super bowl. He has made his coaching staff to work with and train the players in a advanced type of team that is difficult to practice against, they will just change the game plan in the second half.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe as we cover all college football not just Penn State! I agree this a very well coached team! How do you think Penn State can get back on track?
Instant Reaction: The team performed as expected for me. Franklin checks the DEI box so he's going nowhere. This is a 10-2 max program under him and it always will be. They are recruiting as best PSU will ever be able, Franklin can sell sand to a Saudi. At the highest level equal, top talented teams win with coaching. Why Alabama is always there - talent and coaching. Need both and we'll never have the coaching especially offensively. Notice Franklin doesn't have assistant coaches crawling to coach under him, they run away. The reason is obvious. Tampa is a nice consistent winter destination with the once every 7 year or so Pasadena trip. Assuming the Rose Bowl survives the USC/UCLA jump.
Go Blue 〽️ I just want to say 2 things. #1 teams need to stop trying to fight us in the Tunnel. Didn't go well with OSU last year or Penn State this year. #2 It's time the media starts calling out James Franklin about his inability to accomplish the same shit Harbaugh got flack for. Everyone is silent on this matter unless it's Harbaugh. That's not right.
As a michigan fan here, I would say your biggest issue is development. Your getting recruits but your staff is not developing them to they're full ability. I was at the game and knew you guys were gonna be in for it when I saw the size of your defensive linemen compared to our o-line.
@@mroberts566 Ya it's a mind set and recruiting, gotta get some bigger bodies up front. Harbaugh has really done this the last few years and now has the program at a point we're we can out physical almost anybody in the conference.
You had a very good red zone defense if you’re looking for some positive thing to say. If it hadn’t been for that, the game would have been much worse, more like 55 or more to 17. Yes recruiting is very comparable to Michigan, but you got it right in that it’s development. I’ve felt that Michigan gets the most out of the level of players they recruit since the Harbaugh era. They don’t get the talent that OSU gets but I think they develop them better than OSU. I know that’s only my opinion but the evidence is there. I don’t like to say PSU is crap as that’s only a reflection also downplaying Michigan. I’d rather think we beat the tenth ranked team than a crap team, lol. That so called second string RB is a former five star phenomenon Donovan Edwards. No shame in struggling against him. Hope the rest of your season is very good. Go Blue!
Thanks for watching, make sure to subscribe we cover more than just Penn State Football. For the Edwards comment it was more we were focused on stopping heisman candidate corum, to have edwards gash us as well was more the point. Edwards is a great 1-2 punch with corum!
Love this comment Steve and as a Michigan fan this is exactly pisses me off. We kick their ass and the first thing they say is “are we even good” how about saying we are a good team that played an ELITE team, Gurantee if Ohio st spanked them like this they’d be saying “nothing we can do OSU is just better” it’s very very disrespectful in my opinion but I use it to fuel to my fandom. Go Blue!
@@misterceo2168 I understand. Thanks for the love. I used to get too worked up over the wins and losses. Allowed it to give me a huge high and big crash when they lost. Even to the point it made me feel like I personally was less of a person and it took a few days to get over it when they lost. I had to take a step back and come to grips with the fact that it doesn’t matter if they win or lose as far as myself as a person. Sure it’s briefly disappointing still but so much different than it was. Yes that’s how bad it got for me. Kind of like an alcoholic I guess in a way. I had to have my fix in a victory. Long story about how and why I got to that point, but glad to say I’m not there now so it’s easier for me to take those kinds of comments in stride, laugh them off and simply enjoy the victory. It’s Michigan’s victory or problem in victory or defeat, not mine personally. Not at all saying that’s your issue but only sharing it was mine and to hear the pundits say what they say now is merely funny over it angering me as a result of freeing myself from my own delimma (spelling?) GoBlue
You guys do realize that a big problem is at linebacker. They got exposed today. Missing out on recruits a big deal. Poor tackling in general an issue too. These are not likely to be fixed without better talent
Coaching and development of players is far more important than talent. All these kids are talented or they wouldn't be there. Clemson has the most talented team in football. Without good coaching they have a season like last year. You need to recruit guys who value team over personal goals.
And we lose recruits because it is easy to recruit against the mediocrity that is Franklin. Name a QB, RB or WR he has developed into better than they were when they got here??? And a decent lineman will never come here because Let’s Go Franklin either does not care line play as it doesn’t figure in to splash play analytics or all of his line coaches have been as pathetic in their jobs as Franklin is at his job.
To answer your question, we suck in any big meaningful game. 100% coaching. The lack of preparedness is profound. And Franklin claiming his recruits are undersized is entirely his fault. What the hell
The plan I guess, was to keep the defense out and virtually wear them out, keeping the offense on the sidelines. I pretty sure that they have dominated time of possession this season.
Part of the difference between Michigan and Penn State is the two and three star players that Harbaugh finds and is able to develop. None of Michigan's OL were higher than four-star recruits.
One thing people don’t realize is that the longer the defense stays on the field, the easier it is to to give up rushing yards. One thing you guys didn’t discuss with the defense is on many times Diaz sent a defense in with nary a linebacker behind the defensive line and at the LOS and kept the safeties deep. I couldn’t understand that cause that automatically put Michigan’s RB’s with one man to beat if they get second level.
From a Michigan fan's perspective --- what a terrible game plan by Manny Diaz. I figured this one to be low scoring because I couldn't imagine watching the tape of our game against Indiana and doing the exact opposite of what they did to shut us down for a half. And Penn State has way better athletes in the secondary than Indiana and can afford to take chances with them. Once it was obvious that his defense couldn't stop Michigan's run game, Diaz should have crowded the LOS and put his corners on an island. The Hoosiers have a terrible secondary, but we still only put up 31 on them because they removed our run game from the equation for most of the first 50 minutes of the game.
Thanks for watching Pill! Make sure to subscribe as we cover all B1G teams weekly not just Penn State! I think we’re gonna be in for a good game! As these ones are historically close.
I don’t think Franklin is the problem. The biggest difference is the culture. Michigan believes in what they’re doing and who they are right now more than PSU does. Michigan, starting last year, has really become a player led program. The seniors/leaders last year decided that this was their team, their program. Does that come from harbaugh? Not sure. QB and line play are a big difference as well. Clifford simply was not a passing big threat. Made defense a lot easier. I don’t know, I’m a Michigan fan, but follow Penn state as well (I love when y’all play OSU well). Recruiting wise- talent wise the two schools are similar, but I think Michigan made a big effort to recruit character as well. Guys like Hutch and Corum were, if I remember right, were 3 stars, but were special because of work ethic and character. Then Harbaugh and co develop the talent. I like your team, not a big Clifford fan, but I’ll be rooting for y’all big in a couple weeks against OSU! Good luck with the rest of your season!
Thanks for watching! A lot of good stuff there. I don’t think cliff was the issue today. We couldn’t do anything on either side of the ball. I believe corum was a 4star but you might be right!
@@Penn_State_Nittany_No_Huddle Cliff wasn’t necessarily the issue today as far as his play went, more in his abilities. Maybe it’s the WR core that Michigan D didn’t really feel threatened deep. There was that one fade down the sideline that was a perfect ball and catch with pretty decent coverage, but other than that, Michigan was able to prevent your talented young backs from getting going. Michigan DLine is really good, we can get a good pass rush without blitzing and it’s tough to run on em, but I thought y’all would be able to have a lot more success there. Cliffs not terrible, he’s just not a threat. He’s just not as good as you should be able to get at PSU, IMO… but I’m not the one who got signed to a ridiculously long and expensive contract either lol
Jim Harbaugh has better talent. He see players that the recruiting services overlook and turn them in too studs and he does a better job of developing his top level talent.
Something that goes into player development is program culture, something you guys didn't touch on when discussing why there was such an apparent gap on the field vs talent.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! We cover more than just Penn State football. I agree we just did our instant reaction we will be doing a full break down later this week.
Actually, Penn St recruits better than Michigan according to the recruiting websites as far as stars and numbers. The difference is Harbaugh knows there's more to being a good football player than stars and numbers. You've got to remember these are teenagers. They are being coached by high school coaches. Very few of these coaches know how to develop players. I think Harbaugh sees what a player could be instead of where that player is as a high school senior. He recruits potential. Some of these players haven't even barely started to grow and mature. Some of them are about as mature as they're going to get. What I'm saying is some kids are filled out and matured quite a bit when they are 14 or 15 years old. They are dominating their peers at an early age. He sees the ones who haven't reached their potential yet. You've got one guy who is a 5 star who might not get very much better. Then you've got a 3 star who has a ton of learning and upside. The 5 star is better as a senior in high school, that's why he's a 5 star. The 3 star, when he receives the right training and mentoring ends up better as a senior in college. I think that's the difference with a lot of the players Michigan recruits. Aiden Hutchison was a 3 star out of high school. Oluwatini was a 2 star. I know he went to Virginia, but he's an example of the type Michigan recruits. It's hard to tell what kind of college football player a 17 year old kid is going to end up being. It's more than just how many stars they are. Harbaugh is better at seeing that than most coaches. I think Harbaugh and his staff develop players at a higher level than just about any team in college football.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! I agree Harbaugh has really turned the corner, especially since he took his pay cut. It’s exciting times for Michigan. What do you think Franklin can do different ?
@@Penn_State_Nittany_No_Huddle Michigan gets guys who want to play for each other. The team aspect is what is important. They will take a 3 star who exhibits the desire to make the team better and win over 5 star guys who just want to put up big numbers and go pro.
JJs legs is what you didnt see when assessing Michigan vs their earlier opponents as they didnt use him for precautionary reasons. The possibility of JJ going out the backdoor is what allowed the big homerun runs. It's like defending mid 90s Nebraska option. Michigan is 2nd best in college football at 19-2 in the last 2 years so losing to them at their place is nothing to hang your head about. I still think PSU can win every game on their schedule 1 game at a time.
Thanks for watching, make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already as we cover more than just penn state football. Yeah I just wanted us to be competitive vs Michigan.
Just keep in mind, comparing the Penn State game with Indiana and Iowa games aren't comparing apples to apples. Michigan was intentionally vanilla and spent those games building obvious offensive tendencies. JJ wasn't part of the running game at all in those games. Harbaugh saves his biggest wrinkles and opens up the offense, including relying on QB in the run game in the biggest games, and Michigan decided Penn State was one of the biggest games on the schedule.
Its very clear now in year 9 that this is the best Franklin has to offer. It may be good enough for Vanderbilt but not at psu. I actually want us to lose out so somebody in the athletic debt wakes up and hires anyone else
Michigan fan here. I think you are underestimating your team. I think this loss is more of a function of Franklin on the road against a top five team. I think you do pretty well here on out. Tanner Morgan was injured for Minny. I expect you guys to win that one and compete against retry well at home against OSU
this is what I don’t like as a Michigan fan. If Ohio St kicked their ass like this they would be saying “they are just better, we can’t compete with them” but Michigan kick that ass and their shocked deers in headlights. Michigan is just flat out better with better players and coaches.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe as we cover all college football not just Penn State. I think we’re just not as good at any position as Michigan.
@@misterceo2168 they’re right though. There are years when Ohio State gets 5-6 of the top 20 recruits. They out-recruit Michigan and Penn State by a mile. There’s no shame in getting crushed by Ohio State. But Michigan doesn’t recruit any better than Penn State does, which is why it’s perplexing.
for some reason youtube put this on my list only recently as i'm a michigan fan & i follow the team fairly closely. the majority of UM fans still harp on how UM needs to recruit better to match up with OSU even though we've beaten them handily two years running. most people don't seem to want to acknowledge how harbaugh was influenced by how john beilein achieved success. one of the results is how harbaugh recruits for character. he prioritizes it. if you listen to the presser where he discusses each 2023 commit, he spends more time talking about the family members who seemed to have the most impact on developing that player's character. that choice has resulted in a culture where everyone comes in expecting to earn whatever they get, be it playing time or NIL contracts. players come in expecting to be transformed into better *people* off the field as well as better players on the field. and they're receptive to being taught. there's a clear mentality that the team comes first. and that clearly mirrors the approach beilein brought to ann arbor. harbaugh may have taken this a step further; he and beilein are both devout catholics. after the osu game i noticed that harbaugh made a point of commenting that while his players were celebrating the win over osu, first and foremost they were all giving thanks to god and made a point of stating how spiritual they were a a group. i suspect that this is by design. he's not as overt as say, dabo swinney, but the concept of faith is a running theme not only in harbaugh's comments, but also in the comments of his players. harbaugh IMO also was influenced by how beilein with absolutely no ego forsook his reputation as an offensive genius and embraced an emphasis on defense and even hired an assistant to do most of the teaching (something beilein had done only himself throughout his career). and beilein made it back to the championship game. that prompted harbaugh to give up his offensive system and bring in josh gattis to redesign the offense. he actually didn't need to do that as the real problem was the defense (more on this later) and the offense has gone back to being run dominant and using some west coast passing routes to create running lanes. UM also recruits for their scheme. OSU had 14 5 stars but only 5 got regular playing time. 2 of the other 9 are seniors, which means that they're busts; most 5 stars who are any good declare after their junior year. harbaugh recruits for skill sets that fit the scheme over technique/stars. he's commented that 17 year old 3 stars could be ranked 5 stars by the time that they're 18-19. the bottom line is that they're often also more effective coaching up players because the players are more coachable. our strength coach is also a secret weapon. our players are extremely well conditioned. it's interesting that franklin has shaped his program to be able to beat OSU - more like being a mirror image - while harbaugh has had the same goal, but went about it a very different way which is ironically very woody hayes who loved to run and just completely demoralize an opponent who would know what was coming but be completely unable to stop it. someone else commented on another big factor - the embracing of ravens' defensive philosophies. what you saw in 2021 was more a hybrid between the ravens & brown's vanilla scheme. the 2022 version is more of the current defensive scheme the ravens use where they actually focus on coverage, often disguising it while relying on a system of DL stunts/twists combined with zero/zone blitzes to generate pressure. there was one non conference game where the opponent had 4th & 7 twice. the first time we dropped EIGHT into coverage and rushed only three. but our NT still managed to collapse the pocket and a LB dropped out of coverage, came upfield and registered a sack. the second time we rushed SEVEN!!! (with two coming on a delayed blitz) which resulted in a fumble returned for a TD. in 2021 we stopped OSU with a withering pass rush from two future NFL edges and press coverage by our DBs forcing OSU to run a lot of 3 step drops. in 2022, we focused on coverage and gave stroud plenty of time to check down in a clean pocket. harrison's defender typically had help over the top. he *only* time he didn't because minter called a zero blitz with the safety, harrison burned us for a TD. then there's the ability to adapt/make adjustments at halftime. the scoring differential in the second halves of our games was almost 200 pts. that's more than what most teams scored in the second half all season. so it's not just the players. it's the coaching. and the coaches help set the culture as well.
Michigan fan- you don’t suck, as long as you don’t drop a game you shouldn’t you’ll finish top 15 and might make a NY6. Michigans on a different level this year
Franklin said PSU needs to get bigger. Does he mean the guys he recruited who aren’t big should somehow become big? He seemed like it just dawned on him, “Hey! Our O and D lines and LBs are not as big and powerful as theirs. Who did that?” It’s all nonsense. He keeps saying we gotta clean this or that up, gotta do better here and there. But year after year, the only person who’s done better and cleaned up is James Franklin.
On the breakaway Michigan touchdown runs, the Michigan running backs should have been caught by the Penn secondary. Penn State has a serious problem with team speed. That may be the big reason: Michigan is better at developing speed.
This is a coaching issue!! It has been a coaching issue for years now. UM has a better coach and they play as a team! I sick of Franklin blaming team members. This time it's the offense and defense lines. Last game was Clifford!! It's Franklin and Manny!!
there are a number of burns i could be droppin here but i'm just gonna say Franklin has to go. he aint it. never will be. fake some incident to get him canned. he is becoming more beloved in A2! GO BLUE
It could be worse for you penn st guys. Msu gave their coach 10years 95 million. The secret sauce for Michigan is that they’ve built both sides of the line. After realizing that we weren’t going to out athlete the buckeyes, harbaugh built his team to out tough both sides of the ball in the trenches. Now you throw in an elite qb, and Michigan is on track to win a National championship. Not this year but next year. JJ will be a junior, we’ll get the buckeyes at home and their now heisman qb will be in the pros next year. Next year will be Michigans year. They may pull off the upset in Ohio this year but, not likely
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! I agree totally the only issue is Michigan is gonna lose at least two people on the OLine. I think they might be the best team in college football right now.
To somewhat drive home the recruiting point, since Harbaugh has been at Michigan, Michigan has had 7 more players drafted than PSU, or around 1 per year. That's not a significant talent difference. It's ro8ghly the same spread when looking at first round picks or top 3 rounds, an advantage for Michigan, but not a significant one. Honestly, I think Harbaugh has just brought in better coordinators and position coaches than Franklin, and he's brought in guys that really fit what he wants to do and have bought into that.
I think Michigan has learned to recruit to the type of defense they want to play. Also cannot state enough what converting Sanistril to Safety has done for that secondary. He is basically playing at a Dax Hill level in his first year in that role. I thought Dax was in many ways the X factor on the Michigan D last year. Sure everyone had to contend with Hutch but Hill made so many important plays for them.
Y’all went into this thinking that Michigan was not on the same level as Ohio State even though they dominated OSU last year. That was your first mistake.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe as we cover more than just Penn state football. We just didn’t know what Michigan was that’s all, and we found out.
Franklin is overrated as a coach on development aspect. He’s a great salesman at getting kids to PSU but he just hasn’t been able to develop the kids. Yeah he’s had some great players but I believe those kids where gonna be great no matter what. After PSU’s next 2 games if they don’t win them both then they should start Allar and play for the future.
Just bad matchup all around for Penn State. Defense was tough but waaaay too long on the field. As a Mich fan to me it seems like coaching is an issue here, offensively and Head coach wise. Their only goal in the first half should have been was getting first downs. Period. The O line and RB’s are making Harbaugh look great. Finally getting that Stanford on steroids look. Still don’t think that wins CFP but it wears down very good teams. Also think Mich was holding back on their playbook. Still excited to see PSU vs OSU and of course The Game.

UM felt the same way last year after MSU loss. Just take care of business, beat Minnesota, beat OSU and you never know. MSU lost the next game to Purdue and we beat osu.
Rob that has nothing to do with it Michigan runs the ball that's all you know that and you don't stop it after having a bye to prepare just for that. You have a good secondary that can play man why wouldn't you load the box ? It was terrible preparation and that's on the coaching and Franklin is in charge so it's his fault again and needs to go!

You also forget in that Indiana game that one of their coaches had seizure on the sideline. That definitely had an impact but I agree with you
I agree. Also, the Central Michigan game exposed alot of Penn State's weaknesses. Central Michigan was moving the ball on Penn State and controlling the line of scrimmage. Central Michigan had two TD's called back and 4 turnovers. Penn State was lucky in that game and did not dominate.

Good discussion guys; I am a Michigan fan but agree with most of your points..
Thanks for watching!
2023 .. revenge is a dish served cold
@@blizzardwarning5198 Maybe, but Michigan is likely to have a lot of guys from this team back next year.

For your sake and ours 😅
Definitely have some Ballers on your squad though
Thanks for watching! Yeah I agree
Michigan fan here. First time listening. Great show. Harbaugh struggled until he got better coaching staff. Both in recruiting and development. From a Michigan fan looking in from the outside, Franklin is stealing any money he gets from coaching Penn St.
He should take a pay cut like harbaugh until he shows he can earn that pay.
Hoping Franklin can figure it out. I’m so jealous of that running game.
And another thing about life .. never call your team or yourself great. Let others heap that kind of praise.

Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! I agree like he recruited those kids how do you think they feel!?
As a Michigan fan I can say I’m not sure either. I looked at the 247 talent rankings and UM and PSU are basically equal in recruiting talent. But Michigan completely dominated today to my surprise. Seems like UM is just elite on the lines. Starts there. And low class move on Franklin seemingly throwing his line players under the bus after the game. 🍻
I agree like you recruited them. Also michigans line has two grad students 3 jrs on it. A lot of talent and experience on there.
@@jamesbowen8960 truth
In regards to the oline it took Ed Warinners ability to scout talent and then Moores ability to simplify a scheme to maximize their potential. Warrinner scouted and helped recruit most of the line that's playing right now. They were mostly all mid to high 4 star guys. Moore has done a good job so far coaching them up. Olu is a beast and UM was very lucky to get him from the portal.

I'm predicting a meltdown. Franklin has a history of his teams losing after bye weeks, and collapsing after a loss. 7-5
Michigan fan here, just subbed. You don't hear this kind of grounded and level-headed analysis too often in the CFB-sphere. I think PSU finishes 10-2... aint no way yall lose to Minny in the white out; Maryland isn't a pushover but c'mon. TCB
Not sure how you can say that about Maryland after watching the way they played against Michigan. Maryland is legit.

Sometimes we know what we are talking about.

It was brutal to get run over like that. Great game by Michigan tho.

Idk if he’s elite, lol

The difference is that Michigan didn’t give Harbaugh a large contract extension like Peen State did till after Jim actually made the playoffs.
This is all crazy. I'm a Michigan fan for 35 years. I can remember just a few Yeats ago they were talking about Michigan only winning once or twice in 10-15 games against Penn St. It's just the ebb and flow of college football.
Totally agree thanks for watching!

One factor that maybe makes a difference is that Harbaugh isn't shy about getting rid of coaches that he feels aren't cutting the muster.

Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe as we cover more than just Penn State football. I agree completely!

As a michigan fan here, I would say your biggest issue is development. Your getting recruits but your staff is not developing them to they're full ability. I was at the game and knew you guys were gonna be in for it when I saw the size of your defensive linemen compared to our o-line.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe as we cover all college football not just Penn State. I agree tho ya can’t teach size.
I thought the biggest difference last night was toughness. Unfortunately that’s sort of a vague thing that’s not easy to create.
@@mroberts566 Ya it's a mind set and recruiting, gotta get some bigger bodies up front. Harbaugh has really done this the last few years and now has the program at a point we're we can out physical almost anybody in the conference.
I’m shocked to hear you guys not specifically mention Franklin’s consistent ineptitude on gameday, particularly big games.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe! Yeah I mean it’s classic Franklin sucks in big games.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! Totally agree, cheap move to call out the size of your players.
The plan I guess, was to keep the defense out and virtually wear them out, keeping the offense on the sidelines. I pretty sure that they have dominated time of possession this season.
True!
Our best rushers come from the portal. So we let other coaches develop them
True
Part of the difference between Michigan and Penn State is the two and three star players that Harbaugh finds and is able to develop. None of Michigan's OL were higher than four-star recruits.
Thanks for watching Matt! I agree
so insightful Deven .. LMAO
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already. After rewatching the game the d scheme was an issue.
When your signature defensive statistic is “only” allowing 3 points you do not have a winning program.
I mean 3 points is a win on any drive tbh
Thanks for watching! I totally agree it was a horrible game plan.
PSUs secondary is elite. Only positive I can take from Penn St

It's development and coaching to an extent.
Little bit of both!
@@Penn_State_Nittany_No_Huddle
Michigan gets guys who want to play for each other. The team aspect is what is important. They will take a 3 star who exhibits the desire to make the team better and win over 5 star guys who just want to put up big numbers and go pro.
Michigan is just that good…Our offense line is one of best in nation, with one best RB duos. Penn State is good team, just still step behind Michigan.

Penn State's problems under Franklin is 100% coaching. Penn State consistently has 10+ win talent, but only 7 to 9 win coaching.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe. I agree complete 7-9 wins at most.
That is true!

@@mroberts566 lol god u are incompetent
for some reason youtube put this on my list only recently as i'm a michigan fan & i follow the team fairly closely. the majority of UM fans still harp on how UM needs to recruit better to match up with OSU even though we've beaten them handily two years running. most people don't seem to want to acknowledge how harbaugh was influenced by how john beilein achieved success. one of the results is how harbaugh recruits for character. he prioritizes it. if you listen to the presser where he discusses each 2023 commit, he spends more time talking about the family members who seemed to have the most impact on developing that player's character. that choice has resulted in a culture where everyone comes in expecting to earn whatever they get, be it playing time or NIL contracts. players come in expecting to be transformed into better *people* off the field as well as better players on the field. and they're receptive to being taught. there's a clear mentality that the team comes first. and that clearly mirrors the approach beilein brought to ann arbor. harbaugh may have taken this a step further; he and beilein are both devout catholics. after the osu game i noticed that harbaugh made a point of commenting that while his players were celebrating the win over osu, first and foremost they were all giving thanks to god and made a point of stating how spiritual they were a a group. i suspect that this is by design. he's not as overt as say, dabo swinney, but the concept of faith is a running theme not only in harbaugh's comments, but also in the comments of his players.
harbaugh IMO also was influenced by how beilein with absolutely no ego forsook his reputation as an offensive genius and embraced an emphasis on defense and even hired an assistant to do most of the teaching (something beilein had done only himself throughout his career). and beilein made it back to the championship game. that prompted harbaugh to give up his offensive system and bring in josh gattis to redesign the offense. he actually didn't need to do that as the real problem was the defense (more on this later) and the offense has gone back to being run dominant and using some west coast passing routes to create running lanes.
I think we are finally seeing the tables turn in Michigans Favor.
Michigan fan- you don’t suck, as long as you don’t drop a game you shouldn’t you’ll finish top 15 and might make a NY6. Michigans on a different level this year

Nah .. Mich schemed the secondary to be out of the play. Having said that there are some speed issues at other positions
Michigan was just better all around today not sure speed was the main factor but definitely didn’t help.

I can agree with that!

I’m okay with that!
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already we cover more than just Penn State! I agree it was a horrible match up for us! Exciting times to be a Michigan fan!
UM felt the same way last year after MSU loss. Just take care of business, beat Minnesota, beat OSU and you never know. MSU lost the next game to Purdue and we beat osu.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe as we cover all college football not just Penn State. I agree we still have a lot of games left to play.
Much respect from MICHIGAN fan beat Ohio and msu please!
Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! We cover a lot more than just Penn State! I hope we can knock off the buckeyes.
Do you guys really think the decision was Sandy Barbour knowing her retirement was close? Hint: Board of Trustees
Can be both
Most of james franklin elite talent ends up transferring
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! Who ya referring to?
It's an attitude issue! Who is the coach you would play for? Harbaugh makes you play harder? Harbaugh vs Franklin, Michigan always plays harder!
Thanks for watching! I totally agree!
Rob that has nothing to do with it
Michigan runs the ball that's all you know that and you don't stop it after having a bye to prepare just for that. You have a good secondary that can play man why wouldn't you load the box ? It was terrible preparation and that's on the coaching and Franklin is in charge so it's his fault again and needs to go!
Idk if it’s as easy as loading the box and going man, but the coaching wasn’t great today.
Penn State now has a culture of bad OL play. Not getting elite OL talent and zero development of the OL recruits we do get.
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! Yeah I agree we have had terrible OL under Franklin!
Fire trautwein! Get a proven guy who can develop OL.
Here's a positive for the intro. Maybe franklin will be fired
Thanks for watching make sure to subscribe if ya haven’t already! 70mil guaranteed I doubt it hahah
