Nice, Mike! I only got to honk once. I was at a terminal station of my local subway line and I saw the cab door was open and the conductor driver was in front of it. And I silently went "Wow, that's the cab!" I was only 8 years old by the time so this was rather 5 - 6 years ago. My mom said hi to the conductor and I wanted to get the gist of it, so i politely asked. "Mind if i... " He read my mind and said "go ahead, bud! Honk!" I did my very first shave and a haircut!!! It was truly an awesome experience but sadly the trains I ride now are too far away and the cab's are rather struggling to get into. Great Video, Mike! Stay safe and happy railroading!
I was 13 years old and got to ride a Southern Pacific local in the cab of an SW1500 with a GP-9 for about 15 minutes while they switched around cars for a brewery. Had to let me out before the actual engines went on the brewery property, but that was a real treat.
Most of the train horns will easily "wake the dead": this inspite of the fact that their sounds are more towards mellow than harsh. Thank you for the video, or in this case - the audio also!
The higher pitched horns hurt my ears. My husband and I like the lower pitched ones. However we really like the sound of the steam engines the best. Thanks for sharing this with us, there is so much to learn about trains.
@@adventuresofamtrakcascades301 sort of…yeah, I guess? The K5H has a High Profile Manifold while the K5LA has a Low Profile Manifold. Also, the arrangements of the bells on both horns are different.
Man oh man, I need to get to the next Simpson Horn Honk! Couple weeks ago, I was working a northbound grain load out of Vancouver, up to delivery at the EGT elevator in Longview. Just after going by Interstate South, my engineer asked me if I blew the horn. "No, but I heard it too..." We both look out our window and see a local driving down the highway, honking at us with a nice horn setup mounted to his truck. The joys of being both a railroader and a railfan!
Very cool video, Mike. Love the horns, tons of great chords to listen to. I'd love to hear my ex-Santa Fe RS3L on a locomotive some day. That air whistle at the end though was pretty darn cool. I might need to look on EBay for a couple of trombone whistles!
I've always had a great fondness for those Holden Double Tag K5s. Particularly because they're the original horns that are associated with the Bombardier Bi-Level Cab Cars. Although the one here doesn't seem to have that sort of magic to it. Apparently, those ones I'm thinking of used a special tuning done by none other than the Horn Lord himself, Robert Swanson. Either that, or it's the simple fact that BBL Cabs are actual "magic trains", and absolutely anything you mount on them will sound far better than usual. I think it's a combination of both.
Excellent! I did enjoy all the horns on this video, I'm sure there are way more you could have covered but you did do the basic common horns. I look forward to seeing more!
This train horn is old but still useful and durable. I am amazed that the ideas of intelligent Americans building railroads hundreds of thousands of km since the 1876 industrial revolution until now are extraordinary, amazing and the train has become a new civilization until now the most modern in Us. Bravo, Americans are indeed smart, dynamic, compact forward, and have proven to be leaders in creating all industries in the world until now. Thank you to the Americans - warm greetings from Indonesia💞👍
Yooo, my niece went to this railroad just last Christmas! Brought me back a wooden coin with a diesel shunter on one side, and "Simpson Railroad" on the other
I am a Washington resident and only recently discovered the Simpson Railroad while at the Great Teain Show in Puyallup, definetly will check the place out and museum
At the large transportation museum where I volunteer in the rail division we have had several instances of locomotive horn thefts. Since that time, we have taken measures to make it more difficult to steal horns off of locomotives and to identify horns as stolen property when they turn up. I would caution horn collectors to be very sure of the background of horns they acquire and to make sure their collection was acquired legitimately. Horns are expensive and a stolen horn makes a locomotive unusable until replaced.
You bring up a very good point. It is very unfortunate that some people feel the need to take what isn't theirs. Horns are first and foremost a safety device and in addition to the theft of property, it can cause a massive disruption to operations to have horns stolen.
Someone stole the horns off of both Cotton Belt GP60s sitting in the local yard last summer. I was chatting with the crew about it as they waited for a maintenance person to arrive with replacements so they could go out with the daily local.
Oh yeah about the air whistles, they are also used for of course Metrolink and the dart light rail, but not the Westinghouse whistles, something else that sounds like different K3LA horns. I always love train horns!!! WHOO!!! :D

Awesome Video Mike!! I just had a quick question about Train horns where can I buy a horn that was previously on a locomotive? Like the K5LA from AEM-7 936 for example or would I have to take one off a locomotive?
Thank you! Ebay is one place. There are also some Facebook groups where people sell them and you see them every once in a while at train shows. Actually, I think both horns from the 936 were sold at the Amherst show a couple years ago. There are also some scrap dealers who will sell directly to the public.
