    "Review of Rolling Acres Mall: There's no free WiFi, and the customer service is pretty much non-existant. Items in all the stores are overpriced, and they don't even accept Mastercard. The food court is also terrible. None of the food is fresh, definitely not prepared in a sanitary manner that would meet health codes, and you wouldn't want to feed any of it to a rapid caterpillar. The restrooms are out of paper, smell bad, and the toilets don't flush. There is running water.. running down the walls and on the floor. The decor is modern with that old timey vandlized feeling. The janitors should be fired as they are not doing a very good job! Disappointed. 1*, will not return."
    So that was my attempt at humor. On a serious note, great video and explore. I enjoyed watching this! Thumbs up/liked!

    Even though he already said don't go to the mall in the intro, I should note that this place is HEAVILY secured; meaning cops watch and patrol this mall all the time and might arrest you for trespassing if you are caught. A guy on another video of the mall I watched said "They aren't as friendly as the cops in Dan Bell's video."
    So, as tempting as it may be to explore, STAY AWAY FROM ROLLING ACRES.

      +Ace's Adventures interesting. the city of Akron owns it and they say they are patrolling it. ace you have balls of steel to go in there. I was happy to see the inside if Euclid Square was not trashed.

      You're right, they don't care. There were a bunch of sports bikes and dirtbikes out in the parking lot yesterday and we were watching them do a bunch of wheelies and stunts for at least a good hour. Not one cop, nothing.
      Anyways, it's not in a bad area of Akron, haha. It's not great, but it's definitely not bad.

    One of the more fascinating things about dead mall videos, I find, is the very human habit of not wanting to disturb the silence. Whispering has tactical advantage, in case you come across a slumbering meth head. But more a force of habit, silence breeds silence. There seems to be areverence for what WAS. What it represented... what it promised.

    I was driving through Ohio this summer and stopped there to check it out for about half an hour, while the mall was demolished it was a really cool sight to see the shadow of where the mall used to be. Also it's quite odd how three of the anchor stores still stand and they actually are occupied with random businesses.

    I always thought that it would be really cool to have a Li-ion battery, and inverter, and a suicide cable in these kinds of places. Would be neat to apply power and see if you could get lights to operate in discrete locations. Most inverters have short circuit protection, as well as other safety features that would shut it off if there were faults. It would be a safe way to see something possibly come back to life for at least a littl time. Make that place live for a brief instant, a pulse of life just once more...

    I don’t think internet killed malls as much as the recession. I think even though the media says we’ve recovered from the recession of 2008, the middle class still doesn’t have the disposable income that kept these malls busy.

    • @kevaninthe4135
      @kevaninthe4135 3 роки тому

      Malls were already on the decline before 2008 though.

  • @ad356
    @ad356 7 років тому +22

    its more then just the internet that has killed these places. the middle class is dead or dying. the jobs no longer pay a living wage. manufacturing is dead. households have two people working and just to pay the bills. one of the things pushing people to the internet sales, they barely have enough money to live anymore so if they do have an extra purchase they are making every effort buy stuff as cheap as possible. they have no choice. the internet has existed for 20+ years now with online sales not being anything really that new. i remember my mom dragging me to the mall as a kid. used to walk around for 4 or 5 hours in these places, its what women did. they have no money to do that anymore. who goes to the mall with NO money?

    The method that you used for this shoot is amazing, and I completely agree with you that this is NOT a Mall to explore on your own and unprepared! When a Mall is left to this much vandalism and the mould(!) one would expect to see this to be razed to the ground. So much destruction and perilous potentials. It’s showing it’s age, as the corridors are claustrophobic.
    They placed that warning sign up far too late! I never saw that red fountain functioning. Did your friend say that this was closed only a year ago? If so this had some destructive guests! I would recommend better torches to navigate and make your exploring far less perilous. Those four photos where someone spray-painted “You Can’t Hide”, “I Will Find You”, “I Will Hurt You” and “I Will Kill You” felt authentic in that person’s intentions!
    Thank you!

    I would imagine with any Mall GM. It,s very sad to see what was a thriving success turned to a desolate place. Heartbreaking. Yes. Sometimes it is what it is. Every mall needs 2 things to stay alive. 1st. is people. 2nd Sales. Without those two. It,s very hard to keep any doors remaining open.

      I agree but if you end up like Dan Bell having a loaded firearm on top of trespassing would seem to make the situation worse. but yeah if you have your CCW permit carry in that place. that part of Akron is not the high rent district for sure.

    • @discodench
      @discodench 8 років тому +2

      Remember the video with Dan bell at that mall in ohio? He just told them what he was doing, they said ok, and escorted him out of the building. The police knew that he wasnt there to steal copper or murder people, he was probably able to prove on his phone his youtube credentials as a documentary maker and they knew he wasnt worth the time to mess with. I suspect if he had a legal CCW with him they would of had no problem with it, after all they also have guns on them for the same reason.

      I think malls are thriving pretty much everywhere people live that have money to spend inside them, and with at least one or two anchor tenants. The problem (apart from Amazon, Walmart, and the decline of many retail outlets) with many malls in the U.S. was that they were overbuilt. Too many malls in too many areas. Many such malls struggled throughout their entire lifespan to attract and keep retailers. Other malls, like Rolling Acres, were healthy, older malls that fell victim to both the appeal of newer malls, and the declining living standards (rise in poverty and crime) that affected the area surrounding such a mall.

    Crazy. I liked seeing what was up at the fountain end. I never thought of going in there until I saw some of these videos.... by then 1/3 of the mall was gone. It's just that you don't know if you'll wake up some crazy felon living in there.

    You said that there are things in this mall that no one should experience. What things were you referring to?

    These malls when they do close will sometimes stay empty for decades if there is no money in the community to demolish them or re-purpose the space. This is the story of this mall as you know.

    I just discovered your channel and this is my first video, so I don't know how many other videos you've done the flashbacks to what it looked like before, but could you maybe show a still shot of what it used to look like instead of the flashing image/video? I'm interested in your videos, but I find this one very hard to watch during the flashbacks because they give me headaches and it could be potentially seizure inducing to others. If I come off rude, I apologize. I would just like to be able to enjoy this video and future videos more so without the headache from the flashing.

      This place is beyond repair. all the money in the world will never estore the structure. its been exposed to the outdoors for over 3 years. the wood, and steel is brittle rusted and buckled and is weakened immensely. Its cheaper and safer to tear it down and rebuild

    i hear things about malls dyeing ect ect but all the malls by me thrive, online shopping is ok but it isn't as great at going to a store. i think areas with high crime and declining population are the reason malls die example this one lol
