I have an electrician's tip for you Ben. I noticed you were having difficulty pushing the ground wire through the hole. To make it easier, fold the end of the wire over on itself into a loop, then push it through. It will centre itself in the hole and won't catch.
Ben, you should be proud. For under 2 hours, that’s brilliant. If you ask me the colours turned out great!!! I loved the look of excitement in your eyes when it was finished. Like a kid in a candy store!! Congrats mate, ignore the negative comments. For time taken, it’s a work of art and a lot better than most could do.
The difference between a craftsman and a lay person. Id left it all unfinished and just put it together. Ben pays attention to every detail even when he is out of time. This convinces me a guitar that leaves this shop is Top Quality!
You were so perfectionistic! Especially regarding the time you had. You could have just put something together in 60 minutes that would have been playable and made a noise but instead you rather failed but therefore produced something good! I think that tells a lot about your craftsmanship. You sir are a true luthiers-hero 😁
Hey man, thank you :) I'm stopping timed builds like this for exactly that reason.. there is nothing really to be gained by rushing and I would rather build the best I can over the fastest. B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Yeah, very understandable! And it's probably more fun for you that way, when can take your time 😄 (..and don't need to take a pack of aspirin afterwards 😆) Thanks for the great content man! I'm happily awaiting a fret-leveling-file and 2 stunning stains I ordered for my first kit project 😍 Have a great day!
Happened upon this channel while doing some research for my first [re]build. This series was fun and it's always a joy to watch anyone excellent in their craft. You get an honest slow-clap from me with some laughs along the way.

I didn't like the colour scheme at all until you put the scratch plate on and it blossomed. It's beautiful. Well worth running over time for. Just don't scratch that beautiful scratch plate!
I do like the tool unboxing videos for wood working and guitar building, and it might be a good idea to do a guitar build a long video for the ones who want to build a guitar , but they don't know where to start. i love the videos keep up the great work. Thank you for the hard work and work that you do .
Ben, I think you could have made your 100 minute build had you went with a clear finish and not spent so much time on the body. I think every one in U tube land pretty much knows you are a master luthier. Having said that, you should have made that build without coloring everything and just made your guitar. Excellent video. Keep up the good work and try to not set yourself up to fail on the next one.
watching this gave me so much anxiety, but awesome to see it got sorted within 20 minutes of the target time! apparently I need to check out melamine lacquer. nice job :D
To finish these on time I think you need to have everything staged ready to go. Like tools and parts and such. I also think you should work about as fast as you did the last 5 minutes. This build is absolutely possible within 100 minutes.
New idea. The you tube guitar speed building championship, each you tuber who enters builds the same kit fastest time wins. Perhaps sponsors could donate to the winners favorite charity, and the guitars could be auctioned for the builders favorite charity. If videos could be filmed and posted the same day or live streamed then fans could comment and lend support to their favorite builders.
To be fair,I think you did it....ive seen people do stuff like this with everything prepared...if you had everything laid ot ready...tools etc,I think you would have done it comfortably...top job..subd
James has your P45 ready in tbe office ;)... love the finish on that guitar... what brand is the melamine laquer you use? That seemed to work really nicely.. is it more dureable than a cellulose sanding sealer?
You're never a failure when you make a good guitar -- I saw MANY areas you could have shaved time off such as the details on the frets, staining the neck, and just staining in several different colors. Because you have standards, you went 20 min over.
YOU are very good my friend! Good morning FROM ATHENS ,get HI and play MUSICK..!! AND RESTORE OR WHATEVER LIKE YOU! YOU ARE GREAT!(AND FOR YOUR AGE)! !!
As a guy who turns a screwdriver every day, I can tell you those machines are slower. Between charging the battery, changing the battery, and identifying, finding and changing to the proper bit, the old regular is still more efficient (most of the time).
I bet you could do the build in 100 mins if you preplanned all your thinking and had everything ready. In fact I bet you could do it in 80 mins if you wanted.
I mean, honestly, you have probably forgotten more about making guitars than will ever know. That being said, the transitions of the color on the body are not fluid enough. I mean, great doing it in such a short amount of time but there is no need to ever do that again.
A failure? Hardly. A guitar as beautiful as that in as little time as it took to make it is just astounding. Given the quality id sooner buy your guitars over any other companies and that includes Gibson. Really you just made one of the most amazing guitars ever that other companies wont stand a chance to make even compare. Seriously ive seen $7500 gibsons that were just meh by comparison This guitar is incredible
The build was great and I think you could have made the 100 minutes if you had thought it through and prepared more. If you had staged all the tools and supplies ahead of time and used a cordless screwdriver on all those screws. It also would have been faster to do a simpler finish instead of doing a fade. I still think it was a great build. I just recently found you channel so I guess I'm a little behind the times but from now on I WILL be a loyal viewer and subscriber. I look forward to watching all your videos.
I rewatched vids 2 and 3 to see how much time you spent on staining the body and the neck. 18 minutes and 30 seconds! I didn't count the time to drill the strap bolt holes or putting the neck inserts in or the melamine and polish. So there ya go. It was much closer than you think, especially if we don't count putting the strings on as "building".
During the 9 hour build you said you were going to do a 90 hour build of the same style guitar and do a side by side comparison of the 9 vs. 90 to find out if there would be any discernible differences between the two customs.. When is this going to happen? Or is this going to happen?
That was a beautiful guitar! I'm sure you could do a lot of things like inlays, finishes, etc., but once the fretting and finish is done to a certain standard, the rest is "icing" I don't think there'd be a huge difference in playability. It's more to "individualize" the instrument or give it a certain style. The "average" guitar probably doesn't need anywhere near 90 hours even using hand tools and a few power tools. I wonder if you compared the time from master built to artist series what it would the "actual" time come out to? a 90 hour build would be useful in demonstrating what one man without an army of Luthiers and apprentices could accomplish going "back to roots" like the 9 hour. I hope it happens.
ThomEA It would also give Ben the chance to take his time sculpting and choosing to get his, absolute, idea of perfection from his build. It would also give the man the time and space he may need to put his best on the line and bring his idea of "the perfect guitar" to life.
Yes, I agree 100% Crimson is always building the most "modern" guitars they can, and the timed builds have been no exception from concept to completion. With enough time it'd be something exceptional!

The model of the Wilkinson bridge? Shame there isn't a Grainger Trem... yet? Their stuff looks lovely. Not cheap, but seriously well made. And, it has to be said, even though there are a few rough edges the Slush Puppy does look cool.
Could you have finished it without the stain? It seems like that there was the hugest time sink, and without that aspect you go pretty damn close… certainly not as pretty, but, a win is a win?
REALLY WITH THE TRANSFORMERS BEING SEXIST COMMENTS? I'LL JUST ASSUME THAT WAS A JOKE. GUITAR STILL CAME OUT COOL, JUST A FEW MINUTES OVER I STILL SAY SUCCESS.
Turned out amazing bro. Wouldn't call 20 min over a failure, you made a beautiful playable instrument in less than 3 hours.

A Phillips bit in a cordless drill with a careful touch in much faster!
steby123 careful is the right word... I have slipped in the past.
Bosch IXO would be the perfect tool for the job :-)
Catastrophically in my case. Threw out that project.
Great job! And I guess this may be considered as an immediate call for 125k subscribers!
I use a ratchet head ring spanner to tighten tuner nuts. No slipping or scratching and it fits between the posts.
Congratulations on a great series and your 100k subscribers 👍👍👍love all your videos Ben!!!
Well done, Ben! I think you should dub this beast the "Veloci-castor". Truly impressive build time, even if the impossible goal was slightly exceeded.
Great job! Again, Congratulations on the 100k of subscribers.
Although I'm not too fond of that color, for a 2 hour and 2 minutes it turned out Exceptionally well.

I don’t understand the need for the room full of amps...surely you don’t need them to test guitars on...what do they get used for?
tremendous character in that guitar, strangely

Does anybody have the name of the song from the beginning? It sounds really Steve Vai like to me, and I love it

Pretty impressive...that was fun to watch! However either I missed it or you haven't slotted the nut yet so the clock is still clicking 😆
It's a pre-slotted nut as part of the kit. It does need adjusting, though.
Myk Hough ah I see, got it. Thanks for the clarification

4 good videos Ben.
Just wanna say the guitar is built before it gets strung. So......I say you finished before 120 minutes ;)
Nice try! Still built a great guitar in a short time! You got a new sub for your effort!
You should a Yankee Screwdriver to your tool kit. You won't spend minutes on pick guard screws.
What's that switch for?
It's fine, pick guards shouldn't be flush with the guitar body. (Kappa)
Skirmisher I was wondering if anyone else picked up on that, lol.
17:16 Ziltiod Spotted lol
Whenever you fail these you should have to hang the incomplete guitar on the wall as a badge of shame
YOU are very good my friend!
Good morning FROM ATHENS ,get HI and play MUSICK..!!

Interesting bridge. Does anyone know the make and model?
kfa4303 says Wilkinson on it.
livingabovethe12th oh.. I thought it was a Granger bridge..
What about a "Technical Build". No paint. Just sand it, clean it, assemble it, play it.
I do like the concept of a guitar sans finish.. some woods don't even really need lacquer or oil etc! B
I would like to no more about the jar of amp you used to test it!
Looks like ler's Willy wonky guitar.
And now it takes about 2 more hours to tune, thanks to the trem.
Oh staining doesn't count as part of the build!
dont u have a machine to screw all that?!?!??!
small screws like the ones at the tuners tend to get chewed up by powered screwdrivers. They aren't very strong
Machine tools risk scratching the body :/
As a guy who turns a screwdriver every day, I can tell you those machines are slower. Between charging the battery, changing the battery, and identifying, finding and changing to the proper bit, the old regular is still more efficient (most of the time).

I don't think so. Ben said he's keeping this one for himself.

I didn't count the time to drill the strap bolt holes or putting the neck inserts in or the melamine and polish. So there ya go. It was much closer than you think, especially if we don't count putting the strings on as "building".
Actually, the timer counted past 18:30 as you were stringing her up so technically, if you had left her raw you would've made it! Congrats!
Should have just stained it all purple and been done. I would buy it!
Also not bother with the bolt on threads, just use wood screws.

Good attempt. Not a fan of the pickguard color. And you managed to build the equivalent of a Mexi strat in about 2 hours from scratch. Well done :)
Someone buy Ben some bloody sockets for the tuner nuts.
The lifted scratch plate near the bridge is very unsatisfying to watch. :-(
cyrfung glad it wasn't just me!
Why does Ben the tool fanatic not have a set of appropriate sockets or combination spanners?
He does, but someone else (in the company) nicked them. At least that's what I got out of his mutterings.
Great! Mint piece in that short amount of time! Smashed it if you ask me
