  • The event of Karbala on this day of Ashura - the tenth of Muharram - 1385 years ago, was considered a major sign of the End of Times. Abu Hurayra knew the year that Sayyiduna Imam al-Husayn ع would be martyred, and prayed to Allah to pass away before that day came. During the sacred months, especially the month of Muharram, the heart is especially sensitive, and so the effects of good deeds and bad are magnified upon the heart and also upon the substratum of the world, which causes great change and movement to occur in the world. And we saw this change occur. And one of the effects is the drawing closer of the End of Times and the Day of Judgement. History is cyclical, the signs keep on repeating, transitioning from the minor to the major until the Final Hour, and we see the arrival of Dajjal and then the Mahdi; indeed, through out time there have been many minor Dajjals and minor Mahdis. Among them, Yazid, who is cursed, was regarded as a minor Dajjal and Imam al-Husayn ع as a minor Mahdi, just as the five rightly guided Khulafa were also considered as minor Mahdis.
Among the awliya are the arwahhun mutlaka, which are 'released spirits'. Imam al-Husayn ع was one of these 'released spirits', which is why his shifa'a is so powerful. After his martyrdom, which was pre-ordained by Allah, he was enabled by Allah to affect the course of the world, as was his destiny. We see this metaphysical reality in the hadith of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, "My death is better for you than my living."
The martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn ع, as Habib Ali al-Jifri Zain al-Abidin, a descendent of the Prophet ﷺ and member of the Prophetic household teaches, we must have balance on this day; the sadness is an expression of love, and so is the joy at his victory, that is, of principle over cruelty by which he purified the nation of Muhammad ﷺ. Just as sadness and joy are expression of love, so is hatred and love when they are for the sake of the Beloved. These are the attributes of true ghayrah, and a man cannot be a man without ghayrah and a woman cannot be a woman without ghayrah also. And the origin of ghayrah is the spiritual impulse to maintain the boundaries of Allah [shari'ah].
He instructs that must learn about the valor of the Ahl al-Bayt in the face of ugliness, and try to establish those lofty attributes within our own Being. It is this chivalry that is the hallmark of nobility and what the highest potential of man is capable of achieving. Without this ideal spiritual endeavor, it's inevitable we become lowly. The primary lesson in this is that it is a symbol of the End of Times and the coming conflict between al-Mahdi and ad-Dajjal, and we must cultivate our hearts in such a way that we would be from among the people of al-Mahdi.
