Port Maria, a town located in the parish of St. Mary on the northern coast of Jamaica, is known for several distinctive features and historical aspects:
Historical Significance: Port Maria has a rich history dating back to the colonial era. It was one of the main ports used during the time of the Spanish and later the British colonization of Jamaica.
Fort Haldane: Built in 1759, Fort Haldane is a significant historical site in Port Maria. It was constructed by the British to protect the town from potential attacks and was named after the then-governor of Jamaica, General George Haldane.
Beaches: The town is close to several beautiful beaches, including Pagee Beach, which is popular with both locals and tourists for its serene environment and scenic views.

My mother’s relatives are from saint mary, port Maria area. Port Maria is very historic. For example, You passed by Chief Tayki school in the early section of the video. Tayki was a chief in Ghana, west Africa and was taken to Jamaica with other members of his community in 1780’s. He and the majority of Jamaicans at that time came mainly from the Akan people of what was then called the Gold Coast. When he got to Jamaica he and his members refuse to work on the plantations and instead took up arms in an attempt to create a black republic governed by and for Africans . They were able to subdue and take control of most of the plantations on the eastern half of the island creating the largest slave rebellion ( Haiti later became larger) at that time in the western hemisphere.unfortunately, the British were able to call in reinforcements, specifically, the maroons from hills who helped them to hunt down and kill Chief Tayki and his followers.
