...but there men are a disappointment, I remember one night in the year 2000 a Kamba cop arrested me at a friend's house in Kangemi. In those days Kabete Police Station cops used to intrude into people houses at night and arrest people on flimsy accusations. I can reminisce as it was yesterday it was on a Friday. The cop and I had a misunderstanding one thing led to another, I found myself in hot soup. Mundu wakwa...left my friends behind and decided I had to spend the weekend at Kabete police station cells. Before then I had to go on patrol with the cops all over Kangemi. My little understanding of the Kamba language did not help either to convince the rogue cop to let me free. Since I had studied my primary school grade 6 and 7 in Mutomo, Kitui District. I was as innocent as a child, I had not broken any law of the land. My insistence pleading for mercy fell in deaf ears. Let come may I surrendered to my fate no sooner had the patrol ended than I found myself in Kabete Police Station OB counter. The crooked cop removed a roll of bhang (Marijuana) or call it cannabis sativa. He handed it to the cop manning the counter and told him to record me in the occurrence book. This cop looked young I guessed he had just graduated from their infamous college Kiganjo.My flimsy crime possession of bhang. Let not forget it is a Friday, that means along sojourn to Monday where I was to be charged with a crime I had not committed.
It was past 1 am, after handing me now a prisoner to his colleague they left me in the company of the loner cop. My mind was at sixes and sevens as contemplated my incarceration. I had to think fast. I saw an opportunity the police station was near the main tarmac road that heads on opposite directions Nairobi Waiyaki way and Kitale. Momentarily as the recruit was unlocking the cell door, I dashed for my freedom. Luckily God was on my side I escaped. An innocent fugitive.
