- - Composer: Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (7 January 1899 -- 30 January 1963)
- Performers: Michel Debost (flute), Jacques Février (piano)
- Year of recording: 1973
Sonata for flute & piano, FP 164, written in 1956-1957.
00:00 - I. Allegretto malincolico
04:54 - II. Cantilena (Assez lent)
09:11 - III. Presto giocoso
The French affection for the flute is brilliantly demonstrated in Francis Poulenc's virtuosic Sonata for Flute and Piano. Each of the work's three movements is fluent and graceful in different ways.
- The first movement, Allegro malincolico, sounds sweetly sad rather than melancholy.
- The second movement is a dreamy cantilena for flute in an indeterminate key, while...
- the third, a chirpy Presto giocoso, puts Romantic ideas to rest with a skittish tune full of relaxed good humor.
The whole is typical of the suave yet piquant style of Poulenc's instrumental music, and the honors (and difficulties!) are shared by both flutist and pianist.
The sonata is dedicated: "à la mémoire de Madame Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge", an American patron of chamber music.
I've heard other good versions, but this is Debost one.

Good afternoon Miss Debost. My doesn't your garden look beautiful.
I love Poulenc's jaunty and easy-going writing. You can tell that he was a guy who liked to have a good time. Probably loved to hang out in cafes, chatting, drinking, playing dominoes. His suave modulations and piquant harmonies are just lovely.
Many french composers did so by that time. Love their music.
Yeah, and now you watch some drug addicts and having sex on music videos.
I would be very surprised to hear that Poulenc loved to play dominoes. At a push he played cards, chess ou dames. And he was probably used to chat in parlours more often than in cafés.
Well, he was French.

I have tears .
I have tears that shed when I was moved .
This song has impressed me .
I was listening to this song while remembering the kindness of my late mother .
I feel the same way when I hear music that I associate with someone special to me. That's why beautiful music like this is so important. It releases emotions from the heart and brings healing to the soul. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hello Shin-i-chi Kozima, I remember you from the English folk song suite!!

How is your conditions ?
How is your great country ?
In Tokyo ,
people are hustle and bustle with increasing Coronavirus infection of night amusement area ( night club , host club , karaoke snack , cabaret club , etc. ) employees and young people .
And the gloomy rainy season of our complaints and discontent continues .
Everything is moist and we're tired of it

How is your conditions ?
Tokyo has more than 100 infected people every day .
Many young people act with childish belief that they are not infected .
Many young people can't understand that Coronavirus is a disease that can lead to sudden death if infected
Just talking is infected .
In Tokyo , more people use bicycles for commuting .
Bicycles shops sell quite a few foldable bicycles for 200000 to 300000 Japanese Yen .
Fear surpassed the amount and transcends it .
Our worries about Japan are whether our daily lives can be restored to normality , and whether the world situation has improved so that the Olympics can be held next year .
Take care of yourself
Good luck !
This sonata is a masterpiece!
Just wow.Poulec should never be underrated, a great.Thank you so much for this composer.I love Poulec. This sonata is a masterpiece...
I don't believe he is underrated, no more so than any other composer born after the Romantic era at least.
Poulenc is really brilliant. My choir sang "Les Tisserands" in quarantine style. Write this down in the research. You will love it for sure:

everybody gangsta till the third movement exists
3rd mvmnt is too circus-like though.

@@darrenh.8322 yeah, i just like mvmnts 1 and 2 better ig
I remember sight reading the 3rd movement at the piano with a flute teacher jamming out - I'm glad I only had to perform the first movement with her pupil at the competition! Loved that too brief F-Sharp minor moment in the 1st. ❤
Agreed. The third movement certainly goes above and beyond in terms of difficulty level. Was actually quite refreshing to get stuck into something that took me nearly a week to master haha. I’m so embarrassed of how good I am at flute.
fantastic piece!!
I must say that olla-vogala have a very good taste. His artist have a spesialite,a butifull sound, thank you Sir!

another interesting piece... underrated compared to many we hear over and over ... Bravo!
I got that beat. 51 years miserable as 💩
Didn't know Poulenc wrote for flute. What a fantastic piece, definitely want to have go. Only recently found Poulenc's piano improvs.
it's really interesting to hear someone else play a piece you've poured months of your life into. some parts, my knee jerk reaction is to think that he did the part completely wrong, but then I have to remember it's part of the player's interpretation. I still can't play this piece perfectly yet, but you know, yet. i'm working very hard on it
juliana How's the piece coming along?
juliana good luck, you'll do it well
Yeah, when I look for recordings of music, normally I enjoy them more a little after I've finished learning the piece.
omg i love sehun girll exols are so talented! i might learn this for a competition but im picking between this and chaminade !:)
Keep up the practice. So far my favorite interpretation of this song is Jasmine Choi, then James Galway, and then Pahud/Amy Porter.
Very good!!!!!
Magnifique...
Wow, so much color in this flute playing. I didn't know it was Michel Debost at first and thought this person knows the flute. It's such a beautiful piece. Someone asked me to play it. There's no way, but listening it to it again brings me great pleasure.

So cool! Thanks!
it´s amazing!!!!!!!!!
the second movement is just, wow
Omg Tash, SO beautiful!!!!!!!!!
wonderful

Stupenda pagina.
This is one of my favourite pieces in the world, but the adverts really spoil it. Such a shame.
Wonderful showcase of composer and performers, plus visuals!
Doing this for nyssma this year! Lovely piece!
Chausson has always been my favourite French composer, and I have also spent hours on end listening to the old-school ones like Rameau and Couprin, but there's just something about Poulenc that commands a great deal of my attention as well. He must have been awfully clever.
The opening melody is so familiar...
It's really simple yet very good, It was used in any other piece?
It's the kind of melody "you have heard when you were a child" - and you have it stored somewhere in your brain... And than it brings this "I know this" feeling. At least I have it like this...
The opening motive has a very strong resemblance to his violin sonata
Rachmaninov’s 2nd symphony 2nd movement.
Kind of reminiscent of Prokofiev’s fifth piano sonata
Really lovely, with many similarities to the Oboe and Clarinet Sonatas of 1962
Love this piece. Michel Debost is wonderful!
i hope i will play this one day
Cecilia Cuglitore i played this at a concert last week - i love it so much
good luck for learning it!
i played it locally at a youth concert, beautiful
I have to play this as a all-city audition along with 500+ other high schoolers

About clarinet also, but that's so hard shit, man
At figure 8, I thought that the use of that rhythm in his clarinet sonata (1st movement specifically) was interesting. I also see the common themes/rhythms that he put into all three of his high woodwind sonatas. Love this sonata!
This is a marvellous sonata for flute and piano - perhaps the best ever written (except of course the sonatas for flute and harpsichord of JSB).
what about prokofievs?
@@marcusrock6800 that one was originally for violin... :-)

Its soo good! I really liked it and it inspired me a lot. One day, I woukd like to plqy that piece.😍😍😍😍😍😍
C'est beau
Una belleza...
The guy knows how to write for flute.
True, but don't forget Germaine Tailleferre....Clarinet Arabesque is delightful, and others. The unsung heroine of "Les Six"
HOW THE HECK DOES HE GET A TOP F SO QUIET
(8:00 and 9:00)
French tonguing and a moo shaped embouchure.
But above all practice hehee!
It’s more than just French tonguing and a “moo” shaped embouchure. In your practice, lots of long tones at different dynamics (with a tuner) will help strengthen your embouchure and tone. Try starting notes at the forte of fortes, then bringing them down to as piano as you can get (while in tune!). Do this the other way. Practicing slow and carefully will help SO MUCH. Good luck!
Nah, it was magic
I'm searching for a very soft and elegant piece, like the second movement of this sonata. Do you think it'd be a good piece for conservatory auditions?
Yes I think so. It's quite well-known, so the people taking auditions know how to rate your performance better because of that.
go for it!!! i think that it would sound great and it definitely is a good piece to show off your range!
Yes. Very appropriate for a conservatory audition
This sounds so similar to the sonata for Clarinet by Poulnec. especially the motif of the 1st movement with the 32nd lick, 7let run and the 3/4 section.
i wish i could play this for the recital

This is not as difficult to play as it may actually sound. As an ensemble, only a trifle harder.

Samaritan Why?
@@user-xy2nb2pb9r It's a sex joke because of the word 'double tounging'
Actually, Poulenc enjoyed cruising the banks of the Seine looking for policemen with very tall shiny black boots.
From your text seems like he did this on purpose
The sound playing seems mysterious tine
how to play 1:23 ? Can somebody give lesson video?
bon
I can’t do the double rounding in the first movement otherwise I would so do this for my grade 8...
Alguien sabe donde puedo conseguir esta partitura?
really want to play this but the third movement scares me
Does anyone know what grade level this piece is for solo and ensemble. Preferably under FBA?
It’s 5-6
Lexie Mason - under FBA, it’s a 6 :))
How do you play such fast repetitions with a flute? Like at 1:24
I think it's a technique called double (or triple) tonguing.
guillatra It's called double tonguing. So instead of playing all notes on a "too", you alternate with a "koo" sound, which lets you tongue twice as fast.
I was taught to double tongue by saying 'duh guh duh guh' instead of 'tuh kuh,' as ive personally found when articulating it more harshly, its extremely difficult to go fast, so going with lighter articulations helps speed it up too :)
I never really learned about triple tonguing until I took a woodwind pedagogy class. Triple tonguing, as I think I understand it, is arranging the syllables in a repeating triple pattern like {du gu du} {du gu du} or {du du gu} {du du gu}. It seems more common, though, to just double tongue in triple meter so you don't run into the same syllable twice in a row.
Did you know Mozart made this when he was eight!!
