    Definitely something I will use . There's always argument for many other aspects of the more expensive lens but for the majority and in good light most will never have a clue

    Like most things .. everything has its place. This will be a new tool in my box! Will it replace my urge to buy the Plena ... right now, I'm saying no. I will use it more to see if I can perfect it. My test will be to shoot a normal 135mm image with a shallow DOF (2.8), use this blurring feature, and see what responses it gets from people who wouldn't know if I mixed in with other Plena pictures. Great demonstration.

    • @tv510
      @tv510  Рік тому

      Yes, that would be the way to do it. I have found that when I am shooting portraits professionally, the client likes to look at the images, either at the end of the shoot or as we go, basically ASAP. It would be hard to try to explain .."The background will all soft and out of focus and you will stand out more and that background won't be a distraction..." But for images that you have time to work on, I think the Lens Blur feature has a lot of promise. Thanks for watching.

    One thing the 135 provided on that last image was nice bokeh. I see there is a bokeh setting in the blur component. how well does it work?

    • @tv510
      @tv510  Рік тому +1

      Hi Anton, it does a decent job with Bokeh but not as good as a high end lens. One of the trade offs.

    I'll take the Plena lens over the endless editing. The masking was pretty bad on several examples. No way I am spending that much time fine tuning the masks and blur. The best example was the apple with small point lights in the background. It did a nice job of increasing the bokeh.

    • @tv510
      @tv510  Рік тому +1

      Yep, not perfect. Unfortunately, as a professional, time is money. When you are dealing with hundreds or thousands of images, taking this much time to edit is unreasonable. However, for most people, having an editing solution to make up for the lens they don't own, is pretty cool.

    • @KennethDAstonJr

      Yea it is but it can be correct as well, who wants to spend money on something that can be fixed in post.

    • @tv510
      @tv510  9 місяців тому +1

      Ha, me too. I like the instant look of the soft background on all my images, rather than going through each one. However, it's cool feature for the "from time to time" needs.

  • @molybdnum
    @molybdnum Рік тому

    IMHO it's best to get familiar with the techniques now, but not at the prices Adobe wants you to pay (they certainly aren't saving me $2500 with the cloud subscription). Computational effects are going to continue to improve and broaden in scope quickly and Adobe will be leading the charge but I'll hold out for a buy-it-once solution.

    • @tv510
      @tv510  Рік тому

      Since Lightroom is available for about $10 per month, it would take about 20 years to make up the cost of a new, high end lens like the Plena. However, it's not for everyone and I would bet that On One and other softwares will come out with something similar.

      @@tv510 I'm on an extremely tight budget. My most modern camera is a Nikon D600. Everything I own is used, bought from KEH or MPB. Thank you, mirrorless buyers. The price of DSLRs and used lenses has plummeted to where I can afford photography again. Mirrorless is way out of reach for me. I enjoy portraiture, and bokeh is very important, so haviong this option in post processing is great. Thanks for sharing!

    1. the tech will only get better
    2. anyone complaining on masking...it takes 2 seconds to mask in photoshop, especially with the new ai features.
    id say at this point, go for a nice body but skimp on the lenses

    Thanks for the video - hate that fake DOF, it’s been around on iPhone/android devices for a while - a lot of your examples look like a cut-out - they do not look like they 'belong' to the background anymore - probably because of very little or no fall-off - so fake, gimme a fast lens for the win every time. Adobe is great at releasing half-baked features and leaving them half-baked (those masks are unacceptable for professional work) - look at content-aware fill in photoshop it’s a joke.

    • @tv510
      @tv510  Рік тому

      ...And there you have one of the reasons I own fast lenses myself. I think the lens blur feature in Lightroom Classic has its place for people without a professional income but want to get a similar look and for those who are looking for the effect after the shoot. Thanks for watching.

      I understand that for truly professional work for companies this doesn't cut it. It probably wouldn't cut it for real portrait photography or wedding photography. HOWEVER. It is a truly game changing tool for social media images taken with smartphones. On instagram many of the imperfections you noticed disappear and you can mke posts stand out a lot more and look professional. My wife is a travel photographer and we've been in situations where we simply did not have the time to whip out her Canon R5 and put on the prime lens. We have had tons of photos that were taken with a smartphone instead, and no matter how much incredible editing you put into a smartphone photo and increase the resolution, that "flat" look gives it away immediately. Adding a tasteful amount of lens blur has truly elevated those photos.
