@z non I *wish*! Just an old fart who enjoys life, living and beautiful locales and who appreciates the time, effort and..."love" that goes into creating these videos. Besides, living in the -bloody fricking cold and rainy- cooler climate of the Pacific Northwest, I appreciate those tropical locations.

Well I started 10 years ago and I have 368 Subscribers!! I follow almost every sailing channel, and always looking for new ones. I spent half my yearly million dollar budget on a SJ4000 camera. I don't need a mic. because I've never seen anyone that I've ever talked to with one! and I've seen people talk in the wind and none has ever had a wind filter on there mouth. Most people don't use a flashlight when it's cloudy so no lighting. I go thru all the comments people make on others video's A few of the big ones you mentioned, Yours also sometimes I don't read them all because they have too many! As it is I must spend two to three hours a day going thru them all. But that's how I find new ones. 99% of the comments are people that don't have a boat and many are just looking for a person to argue with and some I wonder if there kinder garden teacher knows there on line! A friend used to block all the really negative ones but found his subscribers really dropped. The fighters love to find others like them. Anyway if you ever get up in the PNW drop me a line and I'll meet you some where and buy you a beer! I always have beer on the boat! just keep making video's and don't worry about what people think!!!

This is so true! We originally ignored mean comments and thought that we could win them over and turn them nice. After almost a year, we gave up on trying to change their attitude and now just block them.
Now we see happy comments and don't see the angry people :)

    • @followtheboat

Perefect! We had a couple of successes in "turning" them, but it's a draining exercise, so we find ignoring is better. Cheers! 👍👍

Don't let people get you down. Some people don't have enough of a life themselves and they have to hate on others. It's their problem, not yours. Keep going and do what you love, because you will never make everyone happy. At the end of the day, it is your life and your time. Enjoy your life and do what YOU want.

Haters gonna hate, Lovers gonna Love, 28,000 people follow your channel, you must be doing something right. Yes sex sells but to be honest, there is only so much rumpy pumpy, bouncy bouncy and flippy floppy that one can take before it all becomes a little samey. Every episode you guys put out is either beautiful, educational, funny, inspiring or mostly a bit of all of that. Keep up the good work (yours in one of the few channels I turn my ad blocker off as I think that helps)

Human nature can be a kick in the head, can't it? You two have an engaging British variety of chemistry, it's a good thing as it makes you unique. You may see yourselves as a sailing channel, and that's what initially drew me in, but I also see you as a travel vlog, taking us along on your journey to interesting places and people I will never get to see or experience on my own, (sadly I'm just too old and worn by a reckless youth), so please don't be put off by the negative Nancies. I applaud what you have been doing and would be truly disappointed not to see what is on your horizon. May you have sunshine fair winds and following seas.

You two are my favorite sailing channel for multiple reasons. Firstly, your videos are very mature and well thought out without a bunch of click baity nonsense like the bigger sailing channels. Secondly, you two are just generally great people that I'd love to have some beers with and talk to into the wee hours of the morning. Thirdly, you two just have so much knowledge and wisdom to share, it's great and I enjoy it all thoroughly. Keep it up!

A big part of what sets your channel apart, and why we love what you do, is your honesty. You show us the trials as well as the triumphs. You don't glamorize, you just show us how you live. when we got the OK to start our live aboard we first didn't want to let people know on website, FB etc. We were afraid of the answers. we published it never than less and the answers came "I still have to work for another 10 years", "we do not have a money donkey at home like you", "what are you telling me what to do, you are leaving US behind anyway ..." ... thanks for letting me know there are others out there with those "problems" ... and we even do not have a YT channel (not yet). Why do people that choose a - to the majority of people on this planet - different and unconventional life style always have to justify themselves ... Instead of enjoying watching and getting to know other playes through your eyes ... and the accent thing .... OH MY GOD as if the world had no other problems ... keep up your work and fair winds!

One episode that I enjoyed on many levels was the visit to the village that had never seen a yacht before. This was a glimpse into successful sustainable living, and a wonderful contrast to the presumed living essentials of our “civilised” lives. From the youtube viewer’s perspective an intersection of three very different cultures. A real museum worthy work of art which you assembled perfectly.

Your channel is one of my favorites! Your content, editing and commentary is superb! This was a timely episode about YT channels. I haven't seen others address it or not near as well. Thank you for your time and hopefully it will open the minds of some of those critics. Creating video content does take a good bit of time, skill, creativity, patience and lets not forget, money.
I have created extreme sports videos where I often sold over 40,000 per year, for around $20 per film and would rarely have people complain. Later, I made the decision to change direction in life and created some fun stuff for free, I would always have a couple of people that just loved to criticize something about it. I don’t really understand how some people feel that it’s necessary to bash you for doing something you love, especially when you are sharing it for free.
For now, we will just have to ignore those people until someone creates an app that allows us to turn their phone into a taser and give them a little return shock for being an ass.
Keep up the good work, thank you for your honesty, thank you for your time, thank you for your energy, thank you for your patience, thank you for your creativity, thank you for your witty comments, thank you for your posh accents (haha), and above all, thank you for spending your money to entertain us. You are both awesome and I look forward to following your journey. -Shane

A quick word in defense of looking at disaster sailing videos - I personally find these really informative as someone that is planning on doing some long term cruising, but know that it's not all about making short passages through the caribbean.Seeing someone that has a problem, like engine failure, and then understanding how they deal with it helps me prepare and get some tips on when that will inevitably happen to me, and hopefully, plan properly to prevent that happening or at least mitigate the problem with backups. I admit to being very naive about things that can go wrong but, although not being put off, seeing all the things that could go wrong has made me realised I need to prepare much more than I first thought with a 'she'll be right, mate' attitude. I really enjoy your videos...even the happy ones :)

Don‘t worry about the haters. You do your life, you give an insight. If someone wants to pay, wonderful. If someone is angry about that - ignore him, you‘ll not find out why - tell them, that one is free to watch or switch off.

People also hate ones who provide a simple technical solution for something. one can’t imagine, how unfair or ignorant people can be, as you agree. The biggest problem is the difference about „to know“ vs. „to believe“. Knowledge is a lot of work, to believe is a mostly simple decision. So they believe, instead of working to be knowledged.

This is one of your best episodes of this "5-reasons" type yet.
The internet can be a really nasty place. Having a thick skin is so important. A lot of people just HATE self-confident people on UA-cam and perhaps this is why they are drawn to tearing down anyone who projects self-confidence and exhibits competence demonstrating any skillset online. I find that I really have to be extra careful myself about the way I come off online myself because I'm a believer in the "brutally honest" form of communication and it can sometimes come off as overly-critical. Drunk posting is right out. I can easily cross that line.
Sex really does sell, your "naked" episode proves that. However there is a channel I've recently been following called Free Range Sailing that put out an actual naked sailing episode where they showed quite a bit of themselves (pixelated) and I was really surprised that their comments didn't explode on that video. Maybe they deleted a lot of them but it was hardly mentioned at all. Full disclosure, we here are not exactly unfamiliar with the "clothing optional" lifestyle and I've seen a lot of skin at events so it's not really a big deal for us, and in a hot climate shedding the sticky uncomfortable silly artificial skins is a no-brainer if you ask me. But here in the USA there is such a puritan reaction to nudity that most people need to hide in the shadows or get a LOT of flack for it. But online, the taboo of nudity creates a lot of hits regardless, since it is so titillating to repressed people IMHO. I notice a lot of sailing channels throw in many gratuitous cleavage shots and such, and I guess I don't blame them. It works and creates hits. But I do think it is a little funny when it is so obviously done, and over-done. Sometimes (often) I lose respect for a channel if they are doing it way too much.
Finally, I have to disagree that you guys are not gorgeous people. Liz is an extremely cute and vivacious grown-up adult woman who looks absolutely fabulous on camera. Jamie is a very lucky man! I truly believe that you two do get some extra clicks from her pretty smile and lively eyes featured in many of your thumbnails. Don't sell yourselves short.

Actually, I watch (and support) your channel exactly because there is little negativity and few catastrophes. There are other channels out there that seem to be lurching from one crisis to the next - I unsubscribed them because some of their issues just aren't a catastrophe (they're just overblown everyday issues), some are just bad seamanship, etc..
The two of you, on the other hand, always seem upbeat and positive, you share your joy in sailing and exploring. There are some problems, that's ok, but as your survey showed, you take care of your boat and your boat takes care of you.
With sex and problems selling views, that's exploiting a hard-wired function in the human psyche - sex is kinda obvious, if humans interest weren't triggered by that, we wouldn't exist. Problems are similar: something dangerous is happening, you have to keep watching if it might affect you. (No matter if it's half a world away and has no chance affecting you, that's a builtin function from way before high speed long distance communication... )
But please, just keep doing what you're doing - your style is why I'm watching your videos!

We also look forward to documenting it all on our channel. It is funny when you start creating content how your eyes switch to behind the lens. Less about the beauty you see and more about the beauty you can show by choosing your framing etc. So thank you for being you.

Love your stuff. I watch some of the other channels too, but tend to shy away from the ones that depict life on the water as a never ending frat (or sorority) party. I love the locals, especially on snowy, New England mornings (okay, it's not snowing today, but it did yesterday). Oh, and by "pissed," did you mean the British or American definition (or a little of both)?

Your a lovely couple..very good job!...this episode is really food for thought and does shed light on the poor folks that shouldn't be doing this..That being said, (no this isn't where it gets nasty..LOL)..Welcome the the "service industry"..maybe now people will think about what for thousands of years, has been the daily toll of an entire segment of society...A lot of people consider anyone (waitress, mechanic, labor, or Vlogger, etc.) not only below them, but feel it's their moral right to insult, attack, critisize, or just be mean, to these hardworking people. A leather skin is something quickly adopted, for any kind of success, and sanity. I really think your format is up there in the top of the zillions of sailing "info shows", keep at it and Happy Sailing!!

Much of the hate or negativity comes from people who are in life situations (normally by there own hand) that they feel trapped in and are upset that others are living a lifestyle that they wish they could. I get this same kind of feedback now that i am transitioning to live my dream aboard my own sailboat. Saltwest Co Sailing ...I heard UA-cam has an algorithm that will demonetize videos based on what's written in the comments. The claim is that it tarnishes the advertisers brand somehow, and that companies don't want that negative image associated with what's being said in the comments.

    • @LearnToSailMexico
      @LearnToSailMexico 6 років тому +1

+jb hann yeah probably, if they can dream up a reason not to pay content creators and keep revenue to themselves, while running ads anyway, they will!!
