  • Jini Sebakunzi breathes life into the Global Solidarity Fund (GSF) vision through his work as program and grant manager. In this brief conversation, Jini invites us on a journey to see the reality of Salesian Sisters, Ursuline Sisters, Jesuits, Missionaries of Charity (Founded by Mother Teresa), and others all operating in Ethiopia, but not collaborating with each other or development NGOs or governments or companies in ways that could mutually advance each’s vision & effectiveness. Jini then takes a step back and helps us appreciate how Global Solidarity Fund emerged from Pope Francis’ observations through his trips around the world & when people offer to give him $10 million, but his push-back saying: the Vatican doesn’t handle that kind of donation for the works of mercy. Thus Global Solidarity Fund was born. Jini then offers insights from the work over the past few years in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Columbia and his observations from the relationships as both reporting to the foundations that founded GSF (Hilton, GHR, Gates Foundations) as well as managing the grantees. One of the learnings, is that instead of traditional programming and grant-making, GSF wants to do a different kind of capacity building and convening.
Are there practitioners from the Francesco Collaborative / CIIC / Economy of Francesco networks that might want to come alongside some partnership with GSF in the years ahead?
Jini is open to ideas. He welcomes your thoughts!
He’s considering joining our CST Investing Lab to continue conversations started by Fr. Lord Winner from the Claretion Missionaries & Itziar Ugarte from Alboan Foundation (Jesuit-led in the Basque Region of Spain) & funder of the Comparte Network of Jesuit social centers and social enterprises in Latin America.
