  • SPL is a German based company that makes elite studio gear. The Crimson 3 is their all-in-one interface for the home recording studio. Today we inspect; build quality, connectivity and features. We also test out and compare the microphone pre-amps to that of the MOTU Ultralite mk4.

Hi Mate! Exceptional as always! I am one of thos guys who really appreciate craftsmanship in every single thing I buy, and just for that this unit would be a buy for me. The fact that it is made in Germany and not in a "we make everything you would like by starving out my people" country, immediately puts it on top of my rank list; the con being that I just don't need one. The Motu is made in the States right? Keep yours and yourself safe mate!

Thank you for the kind words.
I agree with you. Their is comfort in knowing the company you are buying from is taking proper care of their employees and families. I'm a big fan of both SPL and Violectric for those reasons. Very high quality kit.
      Take care.

SPL retired all crimson devices from one day to the other without any warning in advance. Although it is a great audio device, I personally got sick of driver and usb initialization problems an troubles with drivers that have not been updated since 2016. Much more happy now with my Arturia audiofuse.

Nice review, thanks! Q - I see that you use DT1990, does the Crimson 3 have enough power to feed them? Or should one consider a headphone amp to mediate between them?

I just checked and here in Germany you can get the crimson 3 for 699€. That’s roundabout 850$ so you guys seem to have to pay like 50$ for the import. Great review btw :)

i own a crimson 2 spl and unfortunately owned a motu ultralite. The equation is very simple. They are two very different companies, with two very different philosophies with very different products. SPL has a very nice analog sound. In fact, crimson sounds like analog and the signal is infused with a color or flavor that is pleasing to the ear. It greatly enriches the monitors you are using in the studio. The sound is very expansive and the mic preamps are excellent. The preamps are taken from a high-end spl model, designed and built by ruben tilgner of elysia. Ruben has designed a lot for SPL. The biggest downside to crimson is that it can't be expanded very much. But for me, it's unquestionably a boutique piece at a really competitive price. The sound is comparable to any high-end interface you've ever heard. Defined and detailed. Hot and buoyant. Motu, the model I had, just stopped working in less than 6 months. It was a manufacturing defect of motu and did not want to be responsible. One day, it stopped working with a huge burst of pink noise, and then stopped turning on. The sound was quite cheap, compressed and vulgar. Looking back, I'm glad the interface blew up. The sound quality and impression is clearly that of an interface made in China with low quality standards. The quality of customer service at motu is nothing to cry about.

I bought one and wished i could hook a louder than liftoff silver bullet - is it possible to do this? It has better preamp and converters than the motu though

Did you used the crimson on apple or windows? I'm thinking about picking up the smaller creon even though both units are now discontinued. That being said I'm just worried about drivers. I'd be using strictly for music production, guitar/bass and vocals. Not going to use plugins much at all, just want as much out of the box analog signal as possible.
I know this is an old video but there isn't much information out there for these spl units. So more you could say would be helpful. Thanks.

Try it out with a better power supply. I drive my unit with the Ifi Ipower Elite. It sounds just freaking awesome!!!

Hey I love your videos. Could you do something with DAC's/mixamps for consoles? I have a SBX G6 and an Astro Mixamp but I want something more pro quality level for Xbox Series X and PS5. Any help would be great. Keep up the good work

Most hardware interfaces are only as good as their software.
As that hardware ages, the software/firmware declines
I swapped out a more expensive soundcard for the SPL
    due to poorly designed/implemented/maintained software
    & because
_counter-intuitive option overload is also cumulative_
So when other brands force users to upgrade through declining soft support
The SPL will still be doing it's job
(without an inch thick manual of contemporary features)

Do you lose audio quality by adjusting the volume in the game settings instead of on your headphone amp?

    • @gamingaudioguide9292
      @gamingaudioguide9292  3 роки тому +1

from a scientific perspective, technically yes. think of it like this; the pc is sending a signal to the amplifier. the stronger the signal, the less amplification necessary. since the amplifier is almost always going to inject some distortion into the signal, the less you need it the better.
now, as a consumer/gamer/enthusiast - use it in the manner most functional to you. if you cannot detect any issues, sleep well and move past the debate. ;)

@@gamingaudioguide9292 is the same thing happing when you use a dac like the topping d50s as a volume control? I’m a Xbox gamer and I have a schiit stack. I’m trying to figure out away to set my volume from the couch. Is finding a headphone amp with a remote my only option?

Sound quality wise crimson blows the other one out the water, not even close
