While I dogged Sandwell District's aesthetic and releases, I think they were one of the most overrated labels in the history of Techno. Their live performances (DJ sets + live PA's) was where their strength lay. The label's output was hyped far beyond its actual quality. Most Sandwell District records were pretty mediocre Minimal Techno to my ears....which is funny, because they tried really hard NOT to be labelled "Minimal" and to promote this image as really original, forward-thinking Techno with a darker, "Industrial"/"post-punk" edge. Beyond their clever packaging and graphic designs, the music itself sounded pretty much just like all the rest of the bland, lacklustre "Minimal" that had been dominating the scene since 2003-2004. The very scene, incidentally, that Sandwell's members had immersed themselves in and had very much been a part of until the backlash in the later 2000's. It was all just s very clever marketing scheme, really. They sold themselves as the figureheads of a new, cutting edge style of Techno that was progressive and evolving beyond the stale, played out Minimal trend, while making records that catered to that very audience (which was the predominant audience) meaning they were tapping both the Minimal and anti-Minimal, old school Detroit and Post-punk/Industrial Markets. Pretty clever. It worked, so I guess kudos to them.... But I def won't give them the credit for true artistic integrity they feel entitled to.
