Ah, those were good days.
I wish GRRM was able to complete his story so Benioff and Weiss could have continued to adapt from the source material as they did during the earlier seasons. To expect them to write at the same level of GRRM and at a quarter of the timeframe to produce the subsequent seasons is kinda silly. The later seasons could have really been a trainwreck, but I think they've done a pretty good job of keeping the boat afloat, albeit not perfect. It's still compelling television.
Thought they did a great job with season 6. Season 7 was shakey but still entertaining as fuck. So far season 8 has been good. I’m confident they’ll deliver a satisfactory conclusion even though it would have been better with some source material to work with.
Agreed. Given the choice, I am quite sure that Benioff and Weiss would much rather have been able to adapt from the full story too. Peter Jackson did a great job with LotRs, but he absolutely could never have written that story mid-way through. I am as sad as anyone that season 7 was the way it was, but I am sick of all the hate towards D&D. I love GRRM, and I would not demand he write books on a schedule - but if anyone needs to place blame for the changes in tone of the show, they should place it on George.
Dan Elmore I actually still really enjoyed season 7, with exception of a moment or two. However, season 8 is really problematic. While I still enjoy it for the most part, it seems like the pedal is on the metal way too much.
@@Scrapluv Absolutely. It is still far better than 99% of fiction throughout human history. I am not complaining. But I am not going to pretend Gendry did not sprint over the distance that took them days to cross, in an evening.

They probably had the best character development in the show, after hating them in the first couple of seasons Jamie is actually my favourite character with the Hound also in the top 5.

Or the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan? Lol So many masterful works of fantasy fiction and you only name the most mainstream stuff. You're a basic lad. A total Normie. lol

The reason *I* love GoT, which is instrumental to the entire show and has been of great quality throughout, is Ramin Djawadi's inspired soundtracks. It's like a living, breathing part of the show. Especially in season 8 (so far) there are subtle themes related to characters and houses that he weaves and combines into new shapes.
If ever someone talented enough has the guts to attempt to film Tolkien's Silmarillion, in which sound and song should play a major role, then this is the kind of composing it would deserve!

I am a bit late to this video but this was so emotional and well-done. The way you articulated the whole central idea of these characters going through hell and back to try and do the right thing no matter what teared me up.
And made me fall in love with this show and these characters even more than I was.

My favorite character is Brienne and my favorite episode... My favorite adaptation from the books was The Mountain and the Viper. But my favorite episode on its own merits... hmm.... Man, The Battle of the Bastards and Winds of Winter are really up there. Dinklage's powerhouse acting performance in The Laws of Gods and Men is unforgettable for me though.
I agree about the Battle of the Bastards and the Winds of winter. My favorite character was Littlefinger (holy shit what a lame death that was, I wish the thory that he is still alive is true) and now Jaime(I hated him in s1, I love him now, that's how you do a redemption arc)

The thing I love is that it has such a great sense of a real world. Every place feels like they have their own culture and history and it’s fantastic.

Yes! The Leftovers is the best TV show of all time! *high-five*
I liked seasons 1-4. That being said however, seasons 5-7 and possibly season 8 are objectively worse written and the plots are of lesser quality than early seasons. NO character in the series had any plot armor to save them from meeting their maker, but characters who realistically probably should be dead because their bad decisions are in fact not dead, because they now have plot armor.
I like Jon Snow for example since he is the quintessential underdog character. But, there is absolutely no denying that the character as of seasons 6 and 7 has ungodly amounts of plot armor! Jon should have been dead in the episodes of "Battle of the Bastard" and "Beyond The Wall" after falling through the ice.
I wish the writing had the same stakes, tension and suspense that say Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4 had.

Because even the worst episode ( beyond the wall) still has entertaining lines and epic action and the best episodes have amazing acting, characters, an unpredictable story, realistic politics , epic action, it feels like a movie, and when they kill characters it actually matters.
The worst episode is apparently Season 5 Episode 6 according to Imdb. Even if we get some bad episodes we still will love GOT.
as much as i adore this show overall i could never rewatch the later seasons knowing how boring all the characters become, i dreaded Tyrion and Jon being on screen in the latest season

The only thing that is a shame is the writing of the last few seasons. It undermines a lot, raises a lot of people to the top unjustly without a fair redemption arch, just because they suffered, not matter what they did in the past. Took away our sense of danger, and took away from the game of thrones. But still, it's a show i love.
Freaks of Nature before it was a living thing. Now it’s just a good show.

While I think it got way more goofy and less refined, I still really enjoyed season 8. The filmmaking is just to good for me to hate it overall.
@@LoverboyMedia My favorite of season 8 was when characters were put in mortal danger then the camera would cut away and all the characters would be completely fine 10 minutes late, really felt like GOT again.

I feel like I am one of the few people in the world that is actually satisfied with how this series ended. It was not perfect and over the top and that was the whole point. There is a reason Game of Thrones stands out from the rest. I feel like the heart of the series was lost on too many people and it is truly disappointing to see how everyone has turned on the directors. A rewrite is offensive, not recognizing what brought Danny to episode 5 is ridiculous and I'm really understanding just how basic most people can be. Trust, the series is not so complex for most people and I feel like these undertones were hardly noticed or appreciated by the masses. This, for me, explains the backlash....mind you I have no idea if you enjoyed the final season but this video does highlight, I think, some of the core details from the series that went over a lot of people's heads and pretty much sets the tone for why season 8 went the way it did. Great video.
I'm very much in agreement with you actually. The things that always mattered to me about Game Of Thrones never changed, so while I think the final season could have been way more universally satisfying by just slowing down, I myself really liked it's final stretch.

Man, this is really such a weird show for me. Everyone loves it, and I’ve tried to love it to, but I just can’t. The visuals are spectacular, I love watching for that, but the characters are just not appealing, especially now. Back in the day we had Tyrion and Tywin, but Jon is probably one of the worst protagonists in TV history, I struggle to remember someone as bland as him, and in the last season he’s essentially the highest paid extra in TV. Vikings ruined it for me I think, I see people comparing Jon to Ragnar and it feels as though one is comparing a full course well cooked meal with a twinkie. Can anyone at least explain (respectfully) what it is that draws you to this guy? Harrington seems to try his best, but there is pretty much nothing for him to work with.

I did find it a little bit amusing that you seemed to take some inspiration from Movies with Mikey's penchant for black and white conclusions. You didn't use slow-mo or wistful piano music though, so I think you managed to make it your own! :-)
And yet we'll still get a million and one more fantasy series commissioned by executives who can't see beyond the dragons, sex, and violence. It happens every ... single ... time. Not one of those suits ever stops to think, 'Perhaps people like this thing because under the showy effects and action, there's a good story'.

i felt even more for the death of Robb than even Ned's stark
maybe cos of the way it happened and cos it felt a lot more unexpected ..
but i still do love GOT as a whole, i didn't necessarily DESPISED the last season like so many did out there but i could understand why many were so disappointed
is a mix of people having the highest expectations missing with the fact that sadly the show truly got rushed beyond believe
but how or why they won't just do their absolute best to bring a truly satisfying conclusion?
well i can say i did like the last moment of the least episode
cos to me was cool to see Jon back to his roots and what he was always meant to be
a Ranger who guard the land, the ranger who refused to be a king or didn't want that kind of power (really very ARAGORN inspired if you ask me)
i can understand that so many had the highest expectation from this show cos it truly was amazing to see how beloved this became and for many it was more beloved than life itself
but that is how the biggest disappointments comes to happen
