My Hummer does 50mpg in the city, but it's gone through some changes and has a "Toyota Prius" marking on it..... I've also noticed how quiet it is too :)
The duramax is pretty expensive. You could get a 4bt or 6bt Cummins engine put in though. You actually save a lot of money with the improved mpg, if you plan to drive it a lot it's more cost effective to do the swap, especially at today's fuel costs.
Old comment, but the diesels for this thing were notorious for cracking blocks, like, above 75% failure rate. Gasoline was the only semi-reliable option unless Doug wanted to spend a lot on a new Diesel Engine and installation at the time.
I know this was for entertainment, but I wish you would have properly taped off the rear wheels to where they follow the lower body lines instead of letting that cardboard flop around in the wind. If anything it probably hurt you more. Also when hipermiling I've been taught that the best deal is to hold a constant pedal pressure (unless you have a crazy steep hill) so you slow down a bit on downhills, find a median speed on straights and speed up just a bit on downhills.
+Tpena4 Yeah the cardboard over the rear wheels was flapping in the breeze and probably caused more loss of mileage from the air turbulence than driving fast without it.
Thanks for making my cars seem very gas friendly, Doug. This would be absolute horror with European gas prices. I do wonder how much you could've gotten when you'd slipstreamed behind a big truck though. That's how I hypermile my Jaguar when I'm too broke to drive it properly.
Brendan A. MacWade Pretty sure mine gets the same or worse than a hummer on the Highway... Lmao. Might be the lift and all the off road gear though. Funny thing is I can get better gas mileage in the city than my wrx.
wclifton968 or full on electric. While gasoline engines can last for hundreds of years, the gas won’t. In a little over a decade all the gas will have gone bad, and good luck getting some fresh stuff. With electricity you can always get some solar panels and can last as long as the batteries in your car are good.
Bro, this is Top Gear content! Haha, but seriously I would dig a new Top Gear series with you and some others in it as Jeremy and the rest of the guys left. Keep up the good work!
A great entertaining video, and liking your humour (I'm UK). THis is the reason why I sold my H1. Couldn't park in most places, turning was a nightmare, cost was VERY high to run it and considering the size of the truck, there wasn't much room to put anything in it! But I sure did have my moneys worth of fun out of the beast. Thanks for a great video.
11.1 mpg highway is actually not bad! I think your Hummer H1 gets the same or better mileage than my 1971 Buick Electra (7.5L V8 and it weighs 5,000 lbs with me in it).
My E39 M5 gets about 23 mpg highway if doing ~70 mph and about 25-26 if I'm only doing 55 mph. Then on one long highway trip across the hilly PA turnpike, I employed all of my hyper mileing techniques and averaged 30 mpg over 500 miles and over 40 mpg for during one particularly impressive 100 mile stretch using the burn and coast technique and a bit of drafting.
11 MPG is still better than what my '05 RX-8 used to get in the city. It used to get 8 MPG in the city with premium gas, 5w-20 conventional oil. When I replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and ignition coils, and also began using a thicker, conventional oil, the RX-8 got about 10 MPG in the city.
We reach Princeton and the first car we see in the background is an Aston Martin DB9 which, interestingly, has roughly the same gas mileage as the Hummer.
his fuel mileage reminds me of my first vehicle. an 01 Dodge Durango R/T with 4X4. big 5.9Ltr V8 engine. it got 12 miles per gallon on average. she was a loud beefy beauty.
I get between 19 and 22.5 mpg consistently with my HMMWV with a NA 6.2 Detroit diesel doing top speed(when possible) on winding country roads and dealing with stop and go traffic. No hyper-miling necessary.
In my m998 military hmmwv(humvee) with a 6.2 Detroit, I get 19-25 MPG consistently. And that's without even trying to save fuel. The most I got from the hmmwv was 30mpg, but that required constantly monitoring my driving. Better off with a diesel with any truck that big.
ben ingle depends on how you look at it.. the hummer runs approx at top speed during his highway run. the LM002 runs twice as fast (about 130 mph) So in theory the LM would've done a much better mpg at the speed he was driving.
GTI1dasOriginal it doesnt get 8mpg at 130 mph its more like .5...it was a v12 that got 8 mpg back in the 80's when they were made so thats for like 55 mph too
phil tripe I know what the LM001 / LM002 / Cheetah was... I've seen it testdriven by a monthly carmagazine when it came out.. And yes, I am "that old" indeed. ;) Other than that, not sure if you're right. Maybe we should tag an owner and see if he's prepared to test it out. Know any? I don't. :P
Do what my friend does.... When they ask "What kind of mileage does that thing get??", he just says, totally dead serious, "It doesn't", and that's the end of THAT...
I have a G wagon and I get asked the same thing all the time. The window sticker said 11 city 15 highway but really its more like 13 all the time... no matter what you're doing city or highway. I've had the car loaded up with people and luggage, still does 13, I had the running boards and spare tire off for awhile which weigh about 200 lbs combined and I was still getting 13. It's kind of nice actually because I could probably tow the Queen Mary and still be doing 13mpg. The thing is, in the UK and the rest of the world you can get the G350 diesel which will do about 20mpg combined but there's not really a market for a diesel G wagon in the US. Maybe you should do a Cummins swap!! Have you looked at the Hummers Predator Inc has done? 500hp and I hear the gas mileage is better!!
Considering I was expecting 6-7, That's not bad in My opinion, especially considering my 97 Ram 1500 with a 5.9L gets 13, 15 if it's all highway and I really baby it
Goddam you!! It's 4:00am in the morning and I woke up my wife, who wants to kill me now, because I laughed too much watching this video. To the hell, you and ur damm Hummer! 😂😂😂
I have soviet UAZ-452 that uses about 9,5 miles per gallon. One time I got 13 miles per gallon and that felt like super efficient, even though it's not.

It was driving me mad how you were intercutting shots of you on the Jersey side driving back with shots of you already deep in the bowels of the city and back and forth haha. continuity error to the max
James May (captain slow) gets about the same in average motoring in his old 1970's Rolls-Royce, so to compare with that, it's not too bad really. Me, I get >70mpg at a constant 56mph in my 5 seat Dacia station wagon on regular diesel according to receipts, but that is only 2400lbs and a 90ci diesel unit!
The cardboard flaps probably cause more drag than they did prevent it. If you put them on properly you maybe could have got 12 mpg.
I'm pretty sure those were a joke though :D
Schwarzes Häschen the tape must've done something
true but i also think that
it was a joke
maybe, but it was a joke, Doug's point is: THE HUMMER IS VERY NON-FUEL-EFFICIANT..... lol
It kinda sucks he did the whole thing as a joke bc I was actually kind of curious
You get 11 mpg on an H1, but you get 9 or 10 mpg on an H2
Gas mileage for an H2 is higher than that
That is 11 mpg on a highway in a city the H1 would get 7 or 8 in a city, but the h2 gets about 15 mpg on a highway and about 12 in the city.
@@wesamibrahem1251 duramax is better h1 alpha
H1 is the military HMMWV draped in civilian niceties. The H2 is a reskinned Tahoe. (No really, same line, same parts, just with a humvee-eque shell)
My Hummer does 50mpg in the city, but it's gone through some changes and has a "Toyota Prius" marking on it..... I've also noticed how quiet it is too :)

Same here - love my Prius ....err I mean Hummer lol ;)

Doug you should sell that pig and get one with the 6.5L Turbo Diesel.
duramax is better
@@orlandogarrido527 but expensive

gas engined? What a joke. You need a diesel for this kind of rig.
Cheaper by the thousand No shit. Didn’t know they made a gas engine? What year is this hummer? This guy is an idiot. Lol.
Old comment, but the diesels for this thing were notorious for cracking blocks, like, above 75% failure rate. Gasoline was the only semi-reliable option unless Doug wanted to spend a lot on a new Diesel Engine and installation at the time.
Cheaper by the thousand HMMMV deserves desel
That's a kit hummer...lol
It's yuppies like you, who don't know anything about diesel.
a H1 with a gas engine? haha
sik59rt they came with a 5.7 vortec, i didnt think it did either...
I know they did. I also know that the barely sold any with that engine and nobody wants them
Only the military ones are diesel
Uh, no.
sik59rt LAWL!

***** I disagree. The hummer has all of the aerodynamics of a brick, so any improvement would make a drastic difference.
11.1 MPG..Might aswell buy a Ferrari! Oh yeah, he sold it!
+Tpena4
Yeah the cardboard over the rear wheels was flapping in the breeze and probably caused more loss of mileage from the air turbulence than driving fast without it.
+Anonymous More like gallons per mile...
+ZepG Yes, it was definitely that, and not the windshield that is at a 90 degree angle to the rest of the car.

I do wonder how much you could've gotten when you'd slipstreamed behind a big truck though. That's how I hypermile my Jaguar when I'm too broke to drive it properly.
Lol
Alfred van Kuik Keep in mind that US MPG is different from UK MPG, there 11 is more like 13.2 since their gallons are smaller.
Ryan Wagner Hm, I did not know that. I find gallons very confusing :p But the internet tells me 12 US mpg is about 5km per liter. That's horrible.
But since it's diesel, the H1 still uses less fuel than the H2 which has a gasoline engine.
Ryan Wagner His Hummer has a gas engine, not diesel
still gets better mpgs than a ferrari driven hard lol
any car driven hard*
@@bosengineer not true, had a 01 5 series I’d drive hard and I’ve still average 23 mpg
Grate video Doug. The duck tape sence was hilarious

The fact that you drove to my hometown makes me feel special 😊
But, the zombie apocalypse...
If you want a car for the zombie apocaluypse get an old Toyota Landcruiser or Hilux.
for a zombie apocalypse you'd want a very efficient car such as a GM EV-1 or Toyota Hilux EV or the hybrid model
